We are working our way toward the top here in our Huron League predictions. Only around 72 hours until High School football starts here in 2009.
Marc Cisco has had many great teams during his tenure at Jefferson. The Bears always seem to have size but this year will be a little different. Jefferson won’t have outstanding size but you can count on them being quick and physical.
Offensively, they may have their best QB in years in senior Mike Oley. Throw in a bruising fullback in Bryan McCullough and the Bears could be better offensively this year. This won’t be air Cisco by any stretch but the Bear running game can be tougher to stop when they have a QB who can throw.
Defensively, the Bears must play like they did at times last year. This teams fortunes may lie in their ability to stop their opponents. If they can be opportunistic and force some turnovers, the Bears could surprise many in the league this year.
The Bears always play Airport and SMCC tough. They have beaten the Falcons in back to back seasons so they could have a shot at the league title if they can avoid a slip up against another team in the league. I see that slip coming against a team like Riverview but I can see them potentially knocking off SMCC again. Look for the Bears to go 4-3 in the league and 5-4 overall.
Just wanted to say the above last 2 comments appear to be true. Tonight the bears didn't choke as on of your followers stated above. Yes, in tonights game against Tecumseh; in the first 24minutes I was beginning to worry. They held strong defensively in 1st quarter ending 0-0 and late in
2nd quarter they gave Tecumseh the lead, ending to half-time 0-8. But as all you bear fans know Coach Cisco most likely took ahold of them and woke the angry bears up offensively and defensively and tecumseh had no chance. Final score Bears 21-Tecumseh 8. Way to go Bears!
I agree with the post above. These kids have huge heart. The JV team went undefeated last year and the 1st string D didn't give up a point till the Milan game. With the returning seniors and the strong juniors look for this team to go somewhere. They have a very athletic QB in Oley and he will be able to open up the game. They are not big like other Jefferson teams in the past but they are ready to play 48 minutes of football. It should be a intresting season with this bunch. They have alot of history together.
Everyone counted out the 1994 bears team because they to had lost keyplayers and were also small in size but the one thing you can count on is they had heart which took them to the dome and brought the state championship home. It seems to me again everyone is counting these bears out; but as I personally have followed this youthful group I have simply been amazed! One thing everyone must remember the bears JV team last year went undefeated and previously there freshman year went 6-2-1. These group of individuals are now juniors and full of amazing talent! Speed, Agillity, and most of all HEART! None like I've ever seen before-even more than the amazing 1994 bears state champions! Now combine this with the bears varsity returners- This team will be a force definetly to be reckond with! So to all of you who are counting this team out just remember the bears may at times be down but they are never out! I look forward to seeing these underdogs with so much heart going far and who knows there might be another state championship in there near future!!!!!!
How is SMCC and easy #1… yeah they are young but they got stomped by a young Airport team last year… its the same players and same players will equal same results … Goose Egg under 100 yards of total offense
good so far with your picks. smcc should be an easy #1
I think Jefferson could fall anywhere between the 3 spot and the 5 spot in the league this year. It sounds like a lot of people think their inexperience will be their achilles heel, but i see it otherwise. They return key players in key positions and are adding more athletic speed by the sound of things, and i will guarentee cisco's teams will always be physical so theres no need to worry about it. To make a short story long, the youthfull players could create a more diverse look for the bears, maybe let them give a few more looks…either way, it should be a decent year for the bears
The key for Jefferson is to win the first game vs. Tecumseh. This will be no small task. If they win game one they will make the playoffs and challenge for the title.
I agree Airport SMCC and Jefferson are the 3 top teams… Jefferson is always just tough… they are a bunch of hard nozed scrappers they may not have enough talent as other teams but they play very hard and keeps them in games… good choice… now if Smcc is number 2 and Airport is number 1 you will have same order as me
To be honest your obviously a craig miller fan, he was great but lazy. Jefferson will have a good season, this group of kids have more heart then the last few years.. Look for CC and Airport to be a good team.. imo, i disagree with you huron league because i think more than two teams will be making the playoffs but thats just my opinion.
I just cant see the Bears in 3rd they lost way to many players last year and its to much to fix even for Cisco.
So the win over SMCC last year was a fluke?
Sorry, but after seeing the way Jefferson chokes away games they can and mostly should win, this is a joke. They have to replace a whole team of starters, and I can't believe that any JV team can do that. Not to mention they have always been too inconsistent. Last year they only beat Flat Rock by a blocked punt on a 3rd down, and when they had a chance to make the playoffs, they flat out choked against Carlson. Put them behind Milan, they are highly overrated, and I know they won't prove me wrong. Sorry you no longer have Craig Miller, he was great, you will never replace him.
The Bears had a good JV team last year as well as a dominant Freshman team. Hopefully those classes will help replace losses such as Co-Defensive player of the year Craig Miller.
The only thing that bothers me about this prediction is the fact that only two teams will be left with records that lock them into the playoffs when the Huron League, in my opinion, might be the best in years.
