Week 6 Part II

Huron/Milan: The Big Reds have never lost to Huron. They are a perfect 15-0 against the Chiefs. Last year it looked like the Chiefs had Milan on the ropes going into the 4th quarter but the Big Reds stormed back with a 35-24 win in route to a share of the Huron League title.

Huron is coming off of a loss to their arch rivals in Flat Rock and need to regroup if they are to have any chance at making the playoffs. Last year the Chiefs threw all over Milan and may have to do the same if they plan on pulling off the upset.

Milan is off to a 4-1 start with their only blemish coming at the hands of an excellent Airport team. Milan likes to run the ball but their passing game has been coming along. They must find a way to slow down Huron’s high powered offense.

A week ago I might have picked Huron to win this game and I wouldn’t be surprised if they still did. Milan is the program that Huron would like to become and a win against the Big Reds would help them toward that goal. Milan seems to be getting better every week and they are playing at home. I think this will be a good game but Milan wins 27-24.

Airport/SMCC: This is a matchup of the two teams that I picked to finish 1st and 2nd in the league this year. Neither team has disappointed thus far although the Jets have been much more impressive up to this point. Last years game was a 21-0 shutout and the way Airport is playing the same could possibly happen again. Eric Redmond has turned Airport into a football powerhouse and this may be his best team ever. He will take a 6-7 career record against SMCC into this game. Jack Giarmo took over a great program at SMCC and has continued the storied traditon of the Falcons. He holds a 5-6 record against Airport and Redmond.

Airport started the season off with a win over Bedford and that win gets more impressive each week. The Jets have have rolled over their Huron League schedule thus far and seem poised for a long playoff run. The Jet offense is powered by the best running back in the league in Jodeci Mays and the most efficient quarterback in the league in Daniel Jones. The Airport defense keeps getting better and better and are led by two great linebackers in Drew Nava and Michael Graves

SMCC is coming off a game where they rang up 61 points against Grosse Ile. The Falcons scored every time they touched the ball. The Falcons have had some close calls along the way but they have responded each week with an impressive effort. The SMCC offense has struggled a bit at times this year but they have a stable of running backs that they can give the ball to if needed. The defense has been steady all season and has stepped up almost every time when needed.

All signs headed into Friday’s game point to an Airport victory. The Jets are just that darn good. They have a great back, a great QB, an excellent defense and great team speed. They should be able to snuff out SMCC’s one dimensional offense. SMCC will counter with some great team speed themselves, excellent special teams play, an under-rated QB and an excellent running back in Chris LaBeau. It goes without saying that both teams have excellent coaches. According to my poll, the popular pick looks to be Airport and that makes perfect sense. I think Airport has a great team and a great program but I think the Catholics from Monroe County will have something up their sleeve this week (maybe a prayer or maybe a passing game?). I am going to go against the grain and pick the smallest school in the league over the largest school in the league. Give me SMCC in a hard fought victory over Airport 28-27.

  1. Ill answer those questions for you j.w. the answer is there is only 1 person on the team this year that was on that team and that was TJ lovell and yes all the people who were on CCs team last year better get ready for another embarresing game… AIRPORT WINS

  2. Quit crying about your school being small. If it's such an issue quit paying to go there. You can't have your cake and eat it to. About "Bishop and the big bad jets" How many kids from CC were on that team that beat them, AND the team this year? 1? How many got shut out by last years Airport team?

    j.w.

  3. Bottom line for tomorrows big game between smcc/aiport if smcc can control the ball they win if they cant airport wins just remember what happen to airport the last time they came to navarre field with bishop and the big bad jets that year. smcc will have a surprise for u airport blogers i wounldnt be talking until the game is over with that being said it should be a hard hiting game good luck Falcons the smallest school in the huron league best the biggest.

  4. To Milan Player, if Airport lost that means SMCC would be in sole possession of 1st place and you would just get embarrased again by another good team.

  5. Howey and Fanslaw were both better QB's than Bicey and they werent recruited either. Just get over the fact CC has a great program and quit whining. If you want to shut up us "pompous" Falcons then just beat us!!! We wont complain or make excuses, we will just tip our hat and congratulate you… atleast I will. Even if Bicey was recruited(I really have no idea)… that is one guy out of hundreds that have donned the Green and Gold. It is one thing to recruit by asking a player to come to your school and quite another to actually pay his tuition. CC doesnt have 2 nickels to rub together so I am pretty sure they didnt fork up the 30k so he could play a varsity football game. We play in a league where everyone is larger than us… that more than makes up for the so called recruiting you say we do. CC also played class B all those years when it was really a class C school. We won the 1991 class B state championship with an enrollement of 400 and played a school with 1000. We dont duck anyone and take on all comers.. from Nouvel to Country Day to Divine Child and so on. I think its time the League comes together and root for eachother. I know I root for Airport or whomever comes out of the league come playoff time. Whoever wins or loses this game Friday I think has a real good shot to get to FF. Good luck to all.

  6. to the person that said SMCC never recruited, thats some bull. how about the year u guys went to ford field, how did u guys get bicey as a quarterback. he was prettty good and from my knowledge never went to a catholic school around here??????

  7. What is wrong with you people why are you all rooting for SMCC and why do you all want Airport to go down now… Milan Huron Jefferson Riverview Grosse Ile Flat Rock none of you guys have a chance to win the league im sorry but you dont… the league will be won by Airport or SMCC… SMCC has dominated the league for so many years and have ruined so many season… isnt it time for a new team to step up and finally take down this falcon team… your all rooting against airport because they are doing the best… I think its time someone takes downs these falcons and shows them that they arent the only team thats worth something coming out of the huron league and into the playoffs…. Airport is that team to take them down and take them down hard quit with all this you never want the better team to win… AIRPORT 42 SMCC 13 they are good… they have lots and lots of weapons… their defense if you look at scores gets better game after game… and they are coming off a shut out… JETS FLY HIGH ON FRIDAY NIGHTS…

oh and MIGHTY CHEIFS WILL BEAT MILAN

  8. Mr Huron League….It wouldn't matter who you picked, somebody isn't goin to like it. You have your reasons, and I have mine. Great game coming up Friday, and it's up for grabs. Who wants it bad enough?

  9. I was at the game and not to dog on Cameron at all but the SMCC defensive backs are awful… or they may not be awful but they take 3 read steps and they give receivers so much room … we will see if airport uses that tomorrow

  10. Airports gets the most becasue they should… i mean i hate all this talk about airport just as much as you but i checked and they are 5th in their division and 30th overall in the state… they are far and beyond the best team this year… yeah i wish that werent true but they are… everyone just needs to realize this… they talk the most because they are the best and until someone at least gives them a game then quit getting mad… SMCC wont even give them a game watch and see

  11. two great teams, backs and quarterbacks, imo the best the league has because these kids from both teams win, and thats all that matters

  12. Please find me a Huron League Receiver that has made 15 catches in a game for 216…I don't care who you are or what you say, that is IMPRESSIVE!! I'm not a GI fan at all, I was interested so I went to the Mhsaa website, and checked it out..I'd like to compile all time records in the Huron league to see where people stand. If you can think of a better performance, that hasn't been reported to the MHSAA then report it..it deserves to be in there….You make 15 catches in a game, that is phenomenal the concentration that takes..if you've ever played the game you know one of three things can happen during a pass attempt two are bad for the offense, one is good!! give credit where credit is due…

Also some other Huron Leauge players have great statistical/individual performances..I'd like to know who leads the league in sacks. tackles (weclowski), INT, Fumble Recovery, Forced Fumbles, Blocked Punts, KR avg. PR avg, ..pancake blocks, TD passes, ..TD receptions etc..

  13. Just for the record, Cameron is a WR from Grosse Ile not a QB. If you look at the MHSAA records online you will find that the poster is accurate regarding Cameron's spot in the record books.

  14. Jim Cameron? It took him 15 throws to get 216 yards… Took Mayrand 7 to get 180.. Half the throws and 30 yards difference, Even Jones from Airport has better throwing and yard stats… And your gonna sit there and say Jim Cameron is going int the books? Please. Show it to me in writing. Cameron is not the best QB in this league and still needs some time and weight under that belt of his before he even becomes considered to be book worthy. GI people need to quit riding their teams jock so hard and coming in here trying to make them sound almighty. GI's wind is gonna get blown out like it has quite a few times this years.

  15. ok so to whoever said:

You just HAD to pick CC didnt you?!?!?!?! Stand by for all the Airport kids begging for respect rather than just going out on the field and earning it. Airport wins 100-0! There, I hope that holds them off a bit.

You want airport kids to get respect??? Look at their record, look at how many points they put up a game, look at how everyone is saying Jodeci and Jones are some of the best in the league, AND look at every single sports related blog/website all airport does is talk about how airport is the best thing to come through the huron league this year. All you airport people do it seems is try to promote your team in every way possible. I really don't think any other team gets as much publicity as airport

  16. bloodynutter, i agree with you on everything you said…one thing though. you have to take a placement test if you want to go to smcc. it tells you what classes will best for you..honors, regular, or concepts…i dont think you have to get a certain score on the test to be accepted though.

  17. Ya SMCC "picks and chooses". They dont have a dime to spend but they can pick and choose. I am pretty sure that if you qualify academically, they will take you. Nothing to do with sports what so ever. trust me on this. I like how they make excuses b4 the game is even played. goodness. There isnt a private league that SMCC can play in. The catholic league is too far to travel and hasnt a spot for central. They would kill the lower league, cabrini, Richard… and get stomped in the upper league by DCC and BBR. We do however play a VERY TOUGH non conference schedule year in and year out. Please do not cut down the players on the team who work their butts off. So what if their parents pay money for their education. Good for them!!

  18. why can't a public school get good kids? look at airport. that is a public school and they are usually league contenders in football, baseball/softball, and volleyball. sounds like they have quality kids on those teams. not every person who went to a catholic grade school in this area goes to smcc. for example, i know two people who went to st.charles grade school in newport and they decided to go to jefferson for high school. i also know someone who went to st. patrick's in carleton and then they went to airport for high school!

  19. HURON LEAGUE BLOGGER,

Jim Cameron's 15 Catch 216 Yard Performance ranks him in the MHSAA RECORD BOOK. Thus making both Huron League Records. His 15 catches Rank Tied-3rd All Time in the STATE, and his 216 Yards would be the best in Huron League History!!!

  20. SMCC has the smallest enrollment, but they get the cream of the crop…they don't "recruit", but they get for the most part the highest quality of kid….I'll put it this way…You won't find a public school with 430/215(boys) students of the same quality as SMCC. SMCC can pick and choose, public schools can't. SMCC should go play in their own league, with other private schools. Only two schools in the league can complain about being small. Those two would be ….GI, and Flat Rock..GI at 640, and Flat Rock at 580..SMCC is the Smallest student population wise, but offer the most scholarships. Tradition/Schmadition…there is no secret why they're good almost every year..they get quality kids, and good disciplined athletes. Jack Giarmo, and Ray Lauwers, certainly aren't John Gruden or Pat Riley….if you have the horses I don't care who your coach is..heck even kabflesh would win at SMCC

  21. You just HAD to pick CC didnt you?!?!?!?! Stand by for all the Airport kids begging for respect rather than just going out on the field and earning it. Airport wins 100-0! There, I hope that holds them off a bit.

  22. Nobody wants to talk about Huron and Milan… Its like a JV game compared to how big this Airport SMCC game is… SMCC will win

  23. I bet the only reason you picked SMCC is becasue you picked them to finish first in league earlier this year… so you have to say SMCC… we all know who you really think will win

  24. Hopefully Huron can come up with this one and not poop the bed and lose it. Seems like whenever you give Huron credit, thy tumble. They need to worry about their game and play it out before looking to victory. Games not over til the clock reads "Quarter: 4" and "Time: 0:00". Chiefs need to also realize that anything can happen and they have to be prepared for it. If they just think they have it in the bag, they're going to come up tired and start giving up like we all saw with FR. Go get em Chiefs and keep your head up and play the whole game strong!

  25. OK, lets get this BLOG back in balance…way too much talk about Airheads and SMaCCk.

The Huron/MILAN game is really going to show where the rest of the league wanna-be's are headed. Can Huron shake off the can of whoop-a*# they got from FR? Is Milan reading the paper too much and seeing an exposed Defense and an O that got biltzed….I think this game has tremendous impact and insight into where each of these teams is headed.

Milan should win, Huron needs to win and they both stay in the hunt for a possible Playoff berth.

I smell trouble here for Milan….Huron gets back to the friendly confines of home and I know they are CRANKY at least. Their fans and players are hungry for NEW success and I say they learn from adversity….something Milan is more accustomed to and maybe….just maybe taking for granted???

If Milan wins…Huron will lose credibility and find them selves scraping for another win the rest of the year.
