Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to SMCC for winning the league title.

Sure wish I would have gone to the Milan/Riverview game.

I’m kinda disappointed that Grosse Ile didn’t need to throw the ball more against Huron. I would have like to have seen Jim Cameron in action.

Andrew Mayrand sured missed Blake Caliborne this year.

Will Jefferson ever return the magic of the 80’s and 90’s?

Should Airport and/or Flat Rock consider leaving the Huron League?

That Milan game against Belleville this week is no gimmee.

What if Jodeci Mays and Joe Conner switched schools?

I can’t help but think SMCC has a shot at a state title

I think Riverview may be headed back to Huron League glory in the near future.

Why are certain teams always good and others seemingly bad?

Is high school football success all about coaching?

I sure could use some help this week to cover eight different games.

I betcha that Michael Howey could throw the ball if asked.

Boy, the Lions are terrible. This is tough to watch.

  1. What was the most Huron League Teams to enter the State playoffs in a single season?

The answer just shows that the league is tough.

  2. "the other GI back"….

    C A M C H U R CH

That name has been BEDROCK for GI football on O and D in the past 4 years, but GI has stunk it up so bad that nobody really notices. He just doesn't get the press that Dex Teen does…. and probably shouldn't because Dex is a tremendous talent and fans/media LOVE offensive stats (eg, passing, recieveing, yards, carries, TDs, etc, etc)…..but Mr. Church isn't that far behind Mr. Teen and is certainly one of the best players on the field…both O and D!

Mr. HLF saw that for himself and recongized his efforts last week….GI fans have noticed for a few years now.

To be clear, Cam would not like this post…he plays for team and puts it all on the field for GI…which I think could be said for all of GI players. In my opinion, THE key reason they went from O-20 something to a possible winning season.

WINDS OF CHANGE coming from GI for sure!

  3. Listen im not going to talk crap about Pannone or Rippole there both great players. And your right he may not get DPOY. But it will because of how are league works not because he's not the DPOY.ARE league is the only one that beleaves only good players are on winning teams. So if you put Rippole or Pannone on Huron you would not think they where DPOY see what i mean. But the truth will come out when the sports writers pick and who gos to the next level.Im a HURON LEAGUE fan and SMCC & Airport have great teams.Wish good luckn the playoffs bring home a STATE championship back to the HURON LEAGUE.I have seen all the teams play this year and if i did not have any numbers.say the best off. player i seen was MAYS and the BEST Deff.player was WECLOWSKI no matter whos team they where on.Thats just the truth sorry.

  4. I'm not saying that he was an angel himself, but he was not degrading in the same way that you were.

If he would have said something about Weclowski not being able to hold Teen or Church's jock, it would have been more of a problem.

Bottom line… I don't take sides, I would just appreciate hearing objective comments.

  5. ya he is the only kid who tackles on huron.
    literally the only one.
plus ur 2-6 which obviosuly ur D is always on the field.. bring him to Airport and see who gets more tackles Rippole or Weclowski.
or bring him over to SMCC see who gets more tackles Pannone or Weclowski.

sorry if he gets picked for DPOY then ur lucky.
it has alot to do with your team record also. and i hope all the coaches see that too.

  6. Mr.Huronleagueman
The teen post was a pay back for all the GI bashing on high school players. How did you not see that wake up it makes you look ignorant.GO up a couple post to 12:31 clean your own house before you try to clean someone elses.Where tired of GI talking crap if you want more let me know.

  7. Great call Mr.Huronleague…there are a lot of good players on all these teams, some may not play on the best teams, but dont kid yourself, you put Teen or Weclowski on another team say Airport or CC and these boys are easy All-Staters.These boys may not play on winning teams but give their all every Friday says alot.To hate on a highschool kid is STUPID and you dont know the first thing about class.Good Luck to all the young men this playoff season and LETS GO CC..

  8. Teen is a very talented player. He runs hard when he carries the ball and is a solid defensive player. To say that Teen "couldn't even hold Mays jock" is not only disrespectful but ignorant.

Why do you feel the need to hate on a high school athlete? Maybe before you tell GI to shut up, you should take your own advice.

  9. GI needs to shut up and remember what Airport and MAys did to them.Teen couldnt even hold mays jock.Mays is the man and everyone knows it OPOY.GI you still have rowing.

  10. Im Tired of hearing about teen he has good numbers. But he did get alot thoses yards in thoses blow out games when the other team had there 2s in. LIKE when smcc put up 60 some points and that44 to 0 against airport.Didnt GI just go 2 or 3 years with out a win.why are you running your mouth so much. And as far as your coment on weclowski your MLB is luckey to get a tackle at all. He,s avg. 5 a game.

  11. tired of hearing about welcloski. yeah he has a lot of tackles thats good, most of his tackles were downfield after teen or the other gi back had 20 yard gains

  12. Weclowski now has 139 tackles. He is tied for 8th in the COUNTRY according to max preps.com. and he is second in the state, look it up haters! Anyone still think hes not the best defender in the league? Hes one of the best in the state.

    DPOY

  13. Just found out that SMCC's JV is playing Dundee this Thursday at Navarre Field. Does anyone know how Dundee's JV is doing this season??

  14. One game at a time boys…that was not Cc's best game against Jefferson. The O-Line stepped up the second half and made it look better than it was.Divine Child and then one week at a time lets not get to cocky.Im all for CC and want them to do well….so far so good, lets keep the faith but one game at a time.Nice job O-Line,just like the article in the M.E.News the line doesn't get enough credit….curious who agrees?

  15. Flat Rock should stay. They are the last original member of the league (milan left and came back so they do not count). And I would HATE to see a 2 teir league. I would miss the rivalry that our league has. Every week is a big game. Every week there has been bad blood in the past. Every week there is a story. I think it would be a crime to take that away. I HATE 2 teir leagues. I think that we need to add 2 more teams like the DR league and half of your teams will make the playoffs every year.

  16. should airport leave the league no, have them play in the SEC are you crazy, why? So that they can play all their games over an hour away, should FR, no, why? So they can go 9-0 beating teams like Summit Academy, those are just crazy thoughts. Airport could compete in the newly formed Downriver conference not being top dog because that belongs to Melvindale, but they could compete with the other top teams like wyandotte, southgate, and carlson. They could play in the SEC and fair just as well as Bedford did this year, you know 6-3, 7-2 against larger schools. The league makes sense because of location and it just recently that airport started beating everyone in the league, except CC, by 40 points. CC is the only team i could see leaving the league just because they could go into a catholic league, other than that this is just crazy talk.

  17. Here's a good example of why FR athletics are in the shape they are in…

I went to the homecoming pep rally to take pics and video for my son. This little old lady sits down next to me and I don't really pay her too much mind, just try to be courteous and give her some extra room. There is a little small talk and this lady keeps cheering for the band so I figure she has a grandchild playing. When it's time for skits, games, pep rally type things she is motionless…acting like she doesn't really understand why all the fuss and being pretty much disinterested.

Then I noticed it. The badge that all school employees wear. You guessed it…the principal of the high school. It was like she would rather be back in her office so she could take a nap.

I think it's time for her to retire.

  18. Okay Airport and Flat Rock would never leave the league… Are you saying they should leave the league just because football… why would airport leave because they're to good… they didnt win the league… flat rock yeah football isnt good but what about other sports their basketball team has one of the best players in the state… why would they leave i dont get that question at all… Airport was one of the original and lives about in the center of all of them. not a very good question

  19. CC's JV game against Divine Child was cancelled because their league game is on Monday and they have to have 5 days in between games. The team found out on Tuesday that the game was cancelled. Coach Giarmo is working on setting up a game…rumor has it might be either with Dexter JV or with Dundee JV.

  20. Who are the best punters, place kickers and kick off players in the league?

    For starters…
place kicking -> Zak Richardson, Dan Jones, Seth Gonyea

  21. Lets beat DDC first! That game should be one heck of a battle. A victory over CC would be Dive Child's 6th. Think they might come ready to play? i would think so!

  22. Montague????? How about you not slight the teams that SMCC may meet in the 1st few rounds!! Look ahead.. ya good idea!

  23. easy here people, its wayy to early to think about a SMCC vs Montague matchup at ford field. there is still one week left in the season. and SMCC might not be in the easiest district(clinton, blissfield, and manchester). yah it would be sweet to see it, but its waaaayyy to early to think about.one game at a time!! good luck to all HL teams in the playoffs!

    SMCC fan!

  24. MoCo football Fan

ya montague is good. clearly better then smcc on paper.
but so was crockett- winnable game for smcc.
airport was and smcc pulled it off.
    its football gentlemen.
and for those young men to play at ford field win or lose.
the whole county should be proud of those boys. they did not just represent SMCC. they represented the county of monroe and all those teams should have a ton of respect for them

  25. A couple of thoughts/questions on Flat Rock.

I'm not saying FR should get out. I'm saying they should at least make a commitment to athletics.

I'm telling you sports are an after thought there. All I can say is I speak from experience.

When was the last time they won a league championship in anything? Please don't say bowling.

I'll give you a hint, it's been longer than 10 years.

Flat Rock doesn't pay for assistant coaches other than football.

Huron's budget for their middle school is more than FR's entire athletic budget. What has Huron won. Well they have won 2 league championships in basketball and a league soccer championship in the last year.

Flat Rock won't leave the league but they should push to add Dundee, Ida and Erie Mason. Those schools are their size. Add a Trenton who is out of place in the Downriver League and you have a twelve team league with 2 divisions.

  26. Lets just go along with it because it has been brought up. Does everyone think SMCC would get smashed by montague? Let me hear a score.

  27. Yes, Flat Rock can compete in a few sports where great numbers of players aren't needed to win. The football team plays hard but, let's face it, most teams go into that game with at least a 70% chance of a win. Heart and a good fight only get you so far when you are the smallest public school in the league.

Unfortunately, the only logical move for FR would be to the Lenawee Co. Athl. Assn. and that would be a killer commute to away games. The pay to play would go through the roof and less kids would play in all sports because the parents couldn't afford it.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

  28. Flat Rock NEEDS to leave the Huron League..they're had some real talented athletes over the years, but not enough..they always do well in team/individual districts when they play schools their own size…this goes for all sports..Football is such a numbers game, and the rams just get physically beat up…let them play Erie Mason, Ida, Hudson, Blissfield..etc..they may not win the league, but I'm pretty sure they'll fare, better, and not get so physically beat up…i think they'd fit well in the LCAA…a possible two tear Huron League has been mentioned as well….Chris hit the nail on the head…Weak Administrative support + being the smallest PUBLIC school in the league doesn't equal success….they'll "compete" in basketball because every kid in Flat Rock grows up playing basketball..all of the other sports they get dominated in during league play!….could be a good debate!!

  29. If athletics are an after thought to school i dont really see anything wrong with that. Also, ask any coach in the league and they will tell you when they play Flat Rock, they put up a good fight and the games will stay close. Removing Flat Rock from the league would be a horrible thing to see happen to the league.

  30. Leaving the League would be a terrible move for both Schools. For FR, if they left where would they go? The downriver league makes the most sense for a move, but would that league accept another team? unlikely. It is not easy to fill a complete schedule in all sports as an independent.
As for Airport, this doesn't make much sense for a couple of reasons. First, people need to consider that you are talking about high school athletics and logistics is an issue. Airport would geographically stretch the SEC from Chelsea down to Adrian, then over to Bedford and up to Carleton. Plus its already a big league and would it take on Airport? Milan would be a more likely move to the SEC. Also, people who make a big deal about Airport's "big population" really don't understand the make-up of the school. They are already declining in numbers big time, and a large portion of the school population contribute nothing athletically.

  31. Obviously your late to the dance but I appreciate the fact you visit my humble little blog.

It took you a while about 58,000 hits or so from others before you joined the club.

With that said, loyal followers of this blog will tell you that I am a Flat Rock grad who lives in Huron Township. I am a Lutheran and I have no relatives or family who attend SMCC.

I admire SMCC's program and I probably do so a little more than most because I picked them back August on my blog here to win the league.

As for Airport leaving the league I think they would benefit from competing in the SEC on a weekly basis. Airport has a nice team this year but will probably fall far short in their playoff run this year.

I think FR should consider leaving because they can't compete as long as Athletics are an after thought to their administration.

  32. why would airport and/or flat rock consider leaving the huron league?
that would ruin most of the great rivalries in the league, since they are the central schools along with huron (location wise)
HLG, can you plez elaborate on this for me?

  33. someone told me that they heard Divine Child's JV cancelled on SMCC's JV. anyone know if thats true and if yes, why? that same person told me that they heard SMCC might play Dexter now, but they weren't sure.

  34. 1. why would airport leave the huron league?

    2. HL you clearly are a CC fan and im sick of you riding them 24/7 yes their good this year i dont hate them but must you contiue to praise them all like their gods?

    3. I think airport and CC both have tough playoff schedules this year lets see how they do

  35. anonymous i agree with you about howey. he can throw. i really dont see smcc throwing though in the playoffs all that much. i think they will stick to what they do best. i hope they do open it up a lil though. i just do not see it happening though.

has far as winning state i think they are very capable of it. i am not saying its a given but they are capable. looks like they are in a tough district though- clinton, blissfield, and manchester. i think if they can get outta districts they have a real good shot. as a smcc fan i am curious to know how airport's chances are. i really do not know much about D3 teams. it would be really cool if airport and smcc went real deep in the playoffs!!

  36. i agree howey can throw the ball, problem is that he is never needed to because they are tryin to ice the clock since they are up, he threw only two passes on friday but both were accurate, once playoff come along smcc will throw more id imagine.
