Week 7 Picks Part II

Grosse Ile/Airport: Airport has won four in a row and nine out of the last ten in this series including last years 41-0 win over the Islanders. The Jets are coming off of a 40-22 loss to SMCC while Grosse Ile is coming off of a win against Flat Rock 24-19. This game will feature arguably the two best running backs in the league along with two of the better quarterbacks.

Grosse Ile’s offense has been quite amazing this year and balanced. The Red Devils can hurt you through the air or on the ground. John Bodner will look to keep Eric Redmond’s defense off balance while trying to keep the Jet offense grounded and off of the field.

Look for Airport to keep the ball on the ground most of the night against Grosse Ile. The Jets became a little too pass happy last week and they won’t make that mistake again. Defensively, Airport has the speed to shut down the GI air attack and also has the linebackers that will make running room scarce for the GI running game.

While Grosse Ile is much improved over last year, this game could get ugly. Airport won’t be in a happy mood and will probably take it out on the Islanders. Grosse Ile may be able to score some points on Airport but I can’t see them stopping the Jets at all. Airport wins 42-21.

Milan/SMCC: This has been a good series since Milan re-entered the league back in 1999. The Falcons own a 6-4 edge over the Big Reds since that time. Most of the games have been close and hard fought and this one should be no different. SMCC dealt Milan a loss last year 28-21 forcing Milan to settle for a league co-championship last year.

Milan enters this game at 5-1 and seems to be improving every week. The Big Reds were primarily a running team early in the season but have been improving on their passing game. Milan has three players capable of running the ball in Chris LaBelle, Joe Dunn and Leo Pittman. Defensively, the Big Reds are big, physical and speedy just like every other Steve Robb coached team.

SMCC is coming off of a huge and somewhat surprising win against Airport. Look for the Falcons to continue their typical running game with five or six backs carrying the ball. Defensively, the Catholics will be physical and speedy. Once again, Jack Giarmo owns the best special teams play in the league courtesy of assistant coach Rob Hogg.

I anticipate this to be a close and hard fought game with two excellent coaches matching wits for what comes down to a championship ball game. Milan needs a win to gain a share of the league lead while SMCC is looking to lay it’s own claim to the title. I think this game could possibly be a low scoring affair by these two teams standards and I look for SMCC to win 20-17.

  1. I thought the poster "GO….54" had meant for it to be viewed…. when he posted it, it was sent to the older post section of this blog. Thus I figured it was not read by many. I thought the post was one of the best on here and depicts what many parents do for their children on a daily basis. The post stood for what was good in HS sports and I thought it should be brought to the forefront. I am sorry if I offended anyone by reposting.

I never intend to offend my goal is only to defend those that take cheap pot shots at my school or the students in it and I will continue to do so.

  2. After the 1st couple of games I could see CC with 5 losses. I now see them beating Milan, by not that close of a game. Milan has played only one team that has a winning record and that was a loss for the Big Reds.

  3. Will the wet weather hurt the "mighty chiefs" passing game tomorrow night? Can Coach Stergalis gets his firts win in the Huron League? Where did the "Mighty Cheifs" guy go?

Those are my deep thoughts this week.

  4. I dont know about Tyler Baker getting any looks for MVP but he does play very very hard every play and can do anything his coaches ask him… he is definatley a very big part of airports success

  5. SMCC does have senior leadership, they are the best players on the team and bests in the league, with howey, lovell and labeau.

  6. Heck with all those backs, the stars of the week will be CC's O-Line.STUDS !!!!! from Collins,Burkart,Wilson,Cardella,Gonyea. Studs and all but one are Jr.s they will make the difference.Tough as nails…No pressure huh boys.Friday Night Stars.

  7. if you remember back to the 2004 season…GI was expected to get killed by airport just like this year…but GI came into the game with a great mentality and the desire to win and look what hapened…GI shut airport out for the first time in 20 some years. im not saying that this is going to happen again but that year everyone picked the jets to win and the devils had a different idea. anyone can win this game it just comes down to preperation, the mentality that the players have, the plays the coaches call, and the way the players play the game.

  8. thank you for answering bloodynutter, continue speaking your wisdom to all these other people, im also in my 30's so maybe its just people our age have wisdom that everyone else wishes they had

  9. You know it CC better stay fired up and bring the lumber, I belive Giarmo will have them ready. One thing CC can do and better than most is stay focused. They dont overlook anyone. They know this wont be easy and at Milan, that makes it even tougher.Cant wait, weather, turnovers and CC's O-Line will be the difference.Milan will hang tough but by the 4th ,CC wins.Hope its close either way not a blowout.

  10. I don't have too much time to analyze every game, here are quick picks.

    Airport 49-GI 14
Self-explanitory, the 14 is because it's Airport's homecoming and they'll be caught off guard once early and once late.

    Riverview 21-Huron 14
Riverview is hungry for a win, Huron is reeling, I just have a got feeling Riverview will be focused and get on the board.

    Jefferson 14-Flat Rock 7
Jefferson will be looking ahead to SMCC, but need this game to survive in the playoff hunt, and they are more talented than Flat Rock, so Flat Rock will play very hard again but come up short

    Milan 28-SMCC 21
Call me crazy, but revenge has been a big theme in the Huron League this year (Airport beat Milan, SMCC beat Airport). And what would a Huron League season be without a tie for the league? Milan has been focused and improving, SMCC is coming off such a high they will likely have their egos too high to beat Milan (Just like 2 years ago)

I'll be at the Airport game finally tomorrow, it'll be nice to see football live for the first time this year

  11. smcc does not have senior leadership?? how about lovell, labeau, and howey? not to mention the other two captains who are seniors in dylan miracle and nate johnston. this will be a close game. smcc needs to prove they can win more than one big game a year. smcc can not and better take any of their 3 games left lightly.

  12. ha good comment mocking strap it up tight man… you know they do have to go down after every play anyways so that was smart! Unless they score a touchdown of course… interesting huh

  13. Airport 49 GI 20
and people have tons of talk on here about players for MVP and things, Mays, Lovell, Labeau, Teen, but i constantly see Tyler Baker for punt returns, defense, receiving, maybe he should get some love, nobody ive seen plays harder more every play regardless of score, hits hard, makes smart decisions, and is capable of playing QB, RB, WR, TE, LB, DB. All around athlete, competitor, and football player. Maybe he shoudl get talk for MVP?

  14. please let this go thru, bloodynutter how old are you? im jw cuzz you are on here all the time posting things, not calling you out just interested to see what age range someone is posting all these things cuz truth be told i believe a lot in what you say

  15. Hey haha….
Trying to be cute with your writing style just cements you GI hater status. Is my consistent call for GI success getting under your skin? I would bet that HLF himself would say my prognastication has been…shall we say, SPOT ON.

GI has ushered in winds of change vs the last 2-3 years and a few island haters just can't take it….I'm sure the same bloaks that predicted GI at 1-8 haven't stopped popping-off hoping to talk them into a worse record.

Please continue your pithy comments on the battle cry for change on the island as the boys from GI continue to suprise and delight GI and HL fans. (last I checked it was good to have teams doing GOOD in the HL)

I will give you the D comment…GI certainly needs to tighten that up for sure…or a long night against Airport. But they still call it a game, not a dicision…so you never know??

So to you Haha and all the other Island haters/CC haters or any other pithy commentators….we enjoy ticking you off by rooting for our teams! Kinda like pigs liking to play in the mud and such. Do I smell "rich folk" comments coming again from the hater crowd???!!! Next thing I know, we'll be guilty of recruiting too!

Now its my turn for a cheap shot at you, Mr. won't sign your name…….you wouldn't understand strap it tight on your wedding night…much less Friday night! As for teen and white (and cameron and church and nussbaum and O-Line), I agree that they will feel the ground alot….in airports endzone.

NOTE: This author roots for his team and talks football…I don't tear other teams down…not my style and not good for great BLOG banter. BUT I will defend myself and team/community from obvious hate induced rhetoric. LOVE THIS BLOG…great job HLF!

    Strap it up tight boys!
    SITOFN

  16. Good forecasting Chris….. I would add that SMCC's special teams play is the not only the best in the leaugue it may just be the best in the state. One of the reasons CC does well in the playoffs is that those teams dont know not to kick it away from the deep guys or to squib it.

Milan will be as fired a can be for this game. Especialy since the Falcons ruined their parade last year. I will not give a prediction but i do agree that it will be close. CC seems to play to it's competition this year… not sure i like that.

  17. strap it tight on friday night right mr. grosse ile? haha airpot will run all over gi"s weak defense….and for the winds of change? ask white and teen how they feel when there on the ground after everyplay

  18. milan will win. just like last year, the falcooons can not win 2 or even 3 big league games in a row. its called senior leadership!
they have none. mark my word.
