I Can’t Believe….

First let me say congrats to Grosse Ile.

I can’t believe Grosse Ile won that game.

I can’t believe Douglass had a 320 lb FB.

I can’t believe the lights went out during the game.

I can’t believe it took GI four plays to score a TD from the 2″ line.

I can’t believe Alex Kish ran down Javonte Simpson on a break away.

I can’t believe that Douglass went for it on 4 and 3 on their own 9 yard line with 3:10 to go in the game and nursing a 22-14 lead.

I can’t believe the ref threw a flag on a 60 yard scoring run by Douglass when the Red Devils stacked the line of scrimmage with 9 guys yet the flag occurred 12 yards down the field.

I can’t believe Douglass threw a pass that resulted in an interception on 1st and 10 with 2:03 to go in the game while hanging on to a two point lead.

I can’t believe Alex Kish ran 61 yards for the winning touchdown.

I can’t believe Grosse Ile won that game.

I can’t believe how much I ate at the Motor City Casino buffet after the game.

I can’t believe Pennfield beat Sexton.

Congrats to Grosse Ile.

  1. No SITOFN, not serious. I know you can dish it, just seeing if you can take it. Gotta keep you in line sometimes LOL. Anyway good luck to your boys today, do the league proud. EM

  2. Come on now EM…Bodner goes oh-four 2 straight and now is playing for regional championship. And your going to float the "hope he doesn't get fired next year" hooey on the blog???…SERIOUSLY!!!

The only way Bodner goes anywhere is if he quits (not likely, teacher gigs and ten-year are not growin' on tree's in MI of late) or there is some kind of Penn State incident. (again not a chance)

Stranger things have happened but those silly coach tampering days of yore at GI are kaput…..(again, stranger things have happened)

  3. As i'm sure most of you would agree, the GI-Douglass game was the craziest game I have ever attended. Good luck vs Pennfield. Just hope Bodner doesn't get the boot if GI underachieves next year, wouldn't be the first time. EM

  4. bn – you have been consistent and accurate in most comments all year which is appreciated by all.

You are also spot on about White and that GI may need his arm more than ever to beat Pennfield. Actually both the O and D will need great performances, OK or good won't get the job done.

I feel a low scoring slugfest for some reason…..

How is a team that went to the semi-final in 2004, ran its coach out of town, then became 0-9, and now back to the regional final the turnaround of the decade? I think I will describe that as the rollercoaster ride of the decade. However, I find rollercoasters to be a thrill!
I would say Huron going to the playoffs and being annually competitive is the turnaround of the decade in the Huron League. They were 0-the decade before Kabby got there in 2004, then Huron's players carried him to the playoffs.

  6. I picked your Devils 3rd SITOFN and that is where they finished. I also said this was a winnable region for GI. I wanted to change my mind with 3 min left in the 4thQ but somehow you cats pulled it out.

I just dont know what will happen this weekend however. They will probably be the best team you have faced all year. Maybe Airport was better but only slightly. If White doesnt show up it might get ugly.

Penn started the season with 2 nice wins and have to nice wins in the playoffs. The league they play in is small but competative. I think this might be the end of the road for the Red Devils.

  7. Why quiet, only 1 team left to talk about….seems as though the blog should be on fire based on all the blog smack GI's way during the season….where are they now?

Come on nay-sayers….liven the place up a bit with; apologies, retractions, explanations, excuses, plattitudes, "told-you-so's", "just-lucky's", "wait till next year", "back to the bottom" comments for all of us to enjoy.

OR…some positive substance like; "Way-to-GO", "so-and-so played great", "D-improvement was huge", "O weapons share the spot-light", "coaching credit",
    "program turnaround of the decade"

See, I'll even help with ideas to write about…It's a GI thing being helpful.

    BC Pennfield next…GO DEVILS!

  8. Chris, do you have a game preview coming for the GI Pennfield game?

Any Huron League supporters coming to the game other than GI fans?

  9. bn – white will step it up against pennfield. There are three others that have really stepped it up in the post season – Kish, Groff and Berradi (sp) . If those three (or four) have a good game they will win.

  10. BN-
I like the picks. But I think Hudson takes D7 in a close game over Nouvel. And I think Brother Rice is gunna have a lot of momentum after a HUGE upset over Harrison.

  11. Good Luck GI. You have had a great season even if you go no furthur.

I like it when one of the smaller Huron League schools gets a chance to get into the playoffs and actually win a few.

Again, Congrats to the coaches, players, school and community.

High School Football…… It does'nt get any better!

  12. If GI beats Pennfield that will be very impressive. White will have to step his game up and make some 3rd down conversions with the pass. We might see White throw it 25 times vs Pennfield.

  13. Post district state champ predictions.

    D8- Mendon
    D7- Nouvel
    D6- Ithaca
    D5- Menominee
    D4- Marine City
    D3- OLSM
    D2- Lowell
    D1- DCC

  14. White is not hurt. He may not of had the best of games against Douglass, but it was more than made up by Kish with his two interceptions, a touchdown saving tackle on one of the fastest kids I have seen and finally his game winning 60+ yard touchdown run which was one of his two TD's that game. I don't think we need to worry about his backup which GI does have. White will come out and lead the team to Victory against Pennfield

  15. True Chris but to make all Region you are going "against" Monroe High, Bedford, Dundee, Ida and so on. That makes up for Riverview and GI IMO. Are there more All region selections than there are league?

    -bn

  16. I agree with part of this statement. GI and riverview are only 2 teams. Monroe paper covers 13 or 14 teams. It is not about "All Huron League" Those schools are replaced with kids from much bigger and much smaller schools.
And believe me, the politics for who makes the Monroe "All Region" are greater than you can ever imagine, and many times the best players from a certain team DO NOT make the "All Region" team for the Monroe paper. There are major behind the scenes politics, phone calls etc. made.

  17. A couple of thoughts on All Region (Monroe) and All Huron League. Two very significant teams are left out of All Region because of geographics, Riverview and GI. They were the 2nd and 3rd place teams this season. All Region teams sell newspapers. All players selected are deserving and are usually the best players on their teams.

  18. pennfield's d line was too much for sexton in the fourth, those of you who can't believe it should have taken the blue pill

    also:
    pennfield != battle creek

the mailing address might be BC but that's as far as it goes… it might border BC as a township but you'll find a completely different identity and NO mention of BC

  19. I can't believe Bodner wasn't fired after not winning like one game in three years, and then comes back to win a couple playoff games. I wonder if this his kiss of death, and now he'll never live up to others' expectations or will this guy be allowed to coach there as long as he wants, and is allowed to ride the wave of up and down years a typical high school coach experiences. However, in true Huron League fashion we can all blame the Douglas coaches for "losing" the game as opposed to GI for "winning" it. Unfortunately we forget that the great thing about not only high school sports, but sports in general, is that crazy things happen. Isn't great to witness a game where you've something that totally shocked you. Any by the way, kids, as well as college and pros, make bonehead plays just as much as the exceptional to make sports as entertaining and as humbling as it is.

  20. GI – Pennfield –

what I have seen is that they are Flat Rock Colors but SMCC style of play. It looked like I was watching the Falcons of last couple of years play.

GI will have to be on their A game for this one.

  21. The only thing than puzzled me on the hold is that it occurred almost 20 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. After marching 10 yards off from the spot of the foul it was still a first down. How could the hold have taken place that far down field? It couldn't have.

Sorry I missed you. I will not be going to Battle Creek. It is my daughter's ninth birthday party. It will be a tough matchup against the undefeated Panthers. They have some really impressive victories this season.

  22. Just watched the video. There was a hold on the 60 yard scoring play by Douglass. So good call by the refs.

I will agree with bn. My son said that Douglass was sucking air out there early on about mid game and GI was ready to play until the end.

Also Chris, I wanted to introduce myself to you but seeing that you were on the other side it will have to wait until track season unless you plan on heading out to Battle Creek.

  23. I cant believe pennfield beat sexton, I thought sexton would romp based on strength of schedule, I also cant believe GI has to drive all the way out to battle creek next week. I really want to watch the devils but its a shame they play in the ghetto first, and now way over in pop tart land.

What a shame, looks like I'm going to have to watch MLK hunt some bears.

  24. DOUGLASS was up 8 when they went for it on 4th and 3. The play prior they punted and a 5 yard penalty was called on GI. The punt went about 15 yards. Going for it wasn't that bad of a call. Douglass was getting great yardage on the ground all game.

The pass play however was a very gutsy call. If it works, and there was reason to think it would, the game was over. As it were the QB throws a duck and kish is there for the pick.

Something that Chris didn't mention was that GI seemed to be in better shape. Douglass' players were bowing out left and right in the 4thQ. The final TD of the game, Douglass seemed to really want no part of being out there.

Although I do believe Douglass blew the game, there is something to be said for a team holding it together and taking advantage of their opponents mistakes. GI did just that.

Ya and that holding call Chris was a bit odd to say the least. It was a hold but it was made about 5 yards off the line. How they gave Douglass a first so far down the field i have no idea.

  25. I started on the visitor side but when the lights went out I decided to head over to where there was some light. Game started before I could head back so I hung out over there. Fans weren't happy with the coach.

  26. Congrats to Grosse Ile. Thank God the Douglass coaching staff took all their time outs early in the second half. Also thank them for the bad play calls that caused the interception. The GI D showed up when they needed them most. Thanks for Kish being able to break loose for a 60+ yard scoring run and his two interceptions. WOW Kish really is fast. It was amazing both on his touchdown run and even more impressive was his defensive play against Javonte Simpson.
It was a crazy game but we will take the win!
    Go GI

  27. my cousin told me about that game..told me the whole PSL should be embarrased….HURON LEAGUE don't feel bad about your coaching..be glad u don't have a kid in the psl….
