Huron League Thoughts and Questions

How far will Milan go in the playoffs?

Will Grosse make another playoff run?

What happens when SMCC starts playing D VI opponents?

Does Airport have a shot at the playoffs still?

Can Flat Rock rebound from their homecoming loss to Milan?

Can Huron rebound from another one point loss?

Will the Riverview AD be looking for a new coach? Is that even possible?

Is this the end for the legend at Jefferson?

It has been an interesting season around the league but really no upsets any week. The favorite seems to win most every game.

This week will be easy to pick with no upsets scheduled.

I golfed in two outings over the weekend. I just may be the worst golfer of all time.

  1. I know 1 guy never makes up a team, but since Justin Busch, one of the MLB on the Chiefs has been out with a torn ACL, the Chief's defense is all over the place. There is no way Grosse Ile would have been able to go up the middle so much if Busch had been playing. If you look at the games when Busch was playing, he confined those players so that others could make the tackles-now that he's out for the season-look what happens to the defense!

    1. NAH!!!!! The team is not made up of only him. Huron did really well on defense against Airport and where was Busch? On the sidelines on crutches. It had nothing to do with one kid's ability, it's a team thing

  2. Also, I dislike how you can reply to a post and slip the reply right in under the post u r replying to. In a thread this long nobody will see it.

  3. All coaches know they still "have it" when they step down. Do you think Lauwers all of a sudden thought he could coach anymore? He just realized it ms time to give the next guy a shot.

  4. He should be wise enough to know how selfish he is being by staying this long. Let the next guy step in. He is waiting and has been for a long time.

  5. Chris-we were talented and extremely discipline. We were taught that from Cisco. Heck-we were taught to knock someone on their ass and help them back up. Looking back we also had one hell of a coaching staff. Maybe the old man is losing some fire but he should definately have the option to leave when he wants to.

  6. Listen folks, here is something I have learned over the years being around athletics.

    It's called the parent's credo.

When you win, it's the kid's fault and when you lose it's the coach's fault.

Let's use GI as an example (sorry). When the Red Devils were in the midst of their losing streak back 4 or 5 years ago everyone wanted to blame Bodner. They said he couldn't coach. Now that he is winning, you hear that it is all about the talent. Guess what! John Bodner is a good coach whether he went 0-18 or made it to the semifinals.

Let me tell you something else people. This isn't exact but when you have good talent 9 times out of 10 you do well. When you don't have talent 9 times out of 10 you don't do so well.

Now are there great coaches that win wherever they go? Absolutely! Just look at Al Romano from Tecumseh. He was a winner at Erie Mason, Adrian and now Tecumseh.

Cisco is a good coach. Great? Who knows! Good? Yes! Did he have the talent when he won his state title.? Heck yes he did and I'm sure he would admit it.

I know I brought the subject up but I think Cisco should be allowed to leave when he sees fit. Obviously just my opinion. I'm sure Jefferson has nice kids just like most schools do but they are just down a little talent wise in football this season.

  7. There might not be much enthusiasm from Cisco but his assistants are good coaches and good motivaters themselves. It probably is time for the old man to retire but who knows. It could be another 5 years so to the kids and parents-make the most out of it. It'll be what it'll be. I'd like to know who's in line to take it over? Does anyone know?

  8. A little worried about GI vs Huron this week. Last year Huron was the toughest team for the GI JV to beat. With most of those kids moved up to varsity…should be a contest.

  9. Wow, a lot of people feel really strongly about Cisco and the coaching staff. As a former coach and former parent. I can tell you that a good staff has a balance of experience and youth; Vigor and calmness. Age does not make a coach unenthusiastic. While I don't know Cisco, it is my understanding that he is a fine coach. I think those of us not in the program need to back off and let the Jefferson school district work this all out.

  10. Yes, parents are also a part of that, but having a good program makes believers out of the parents and it carries on. Jefferson baseball is a great program, no issues from parents and kids perform well(same kids, same parents as football). Basketball is on the mend, new people in new places and that will be improving in the next couple years. Jefferson parents arent as bad as u think, they want the best for their children just like anybody else.

    1. Agreed!!!! It's the influence from the parents that is causing the kids not to play with the intensity that they could. Keep talking negatively about the coaches, AD,and the school board and see how much respect you get from the kids. It's all about teaching the players how to play with respect, and sportsmanship first. It's not happening because the adults are not following through with respect and sportsmanship.

  11. Who responsibility is it to make these kids have good attitude good discipline. It's the coach, get your head out of the sand. The kids do what thry see even if they don't notice it. Just like the old saying, I learned it by watching you!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Cisco has to go, so does JV coach
Naveaux. NO fire what so ever out of the men. Can't run a team without passion. Passion gone in both coaches. Panza not brilliant with X's and O's but has a ton of passion, good guy to have around. Hopefully some changes at the end of the year and yes, hopefully done with class.

    1. I agree, but three years ago I watch Panza run a Spread like offense. It was the most exciting game I've seen in years. That was at the freshman level. Hand signals the hole nine. If he can teach freshman that think about what he can do with the older ones.

  13. Anybody on this blog who has coached any sport knows the coach or coaches have to bring the motivation/intensity/discipline to the table in any sport you coach. That is gone right now at Jefferson. New, younger, energetic coaches are needed. Cisco did fine when he was younger and had more energy, he doesn't have that anymore. Players will play as hard as the coaches push them to play. That is missing and Jefferson people close to the program know that. That is why this is all very frustrating in Bear Country.

  14. Piss poor attitudes, poor discipline, poor work ethic, and poor execution is why Bear Pride is not there. Same ammount of talent now as there was in the 90's and 00's. Same offense and play calling as before so how is it Cisco's fault??

  15. Barber is officially gone from the airport system. Teaching and coaching. To have no contact with players or students. No closure with any kids. Respected teacher and coach. Current coaching staff and team captains should be praised for keeping the team together. Let's move on.

    1. You should learn not to give anyone anything to gossip about. The less you say the less gossipy people take it out on the kids. Not that it is anyone's business what you just replied with…..

  16. New school board? New AD? C'mon guys it is high school football. Have you ever complained about the test scores at Jefferson?

    1. Yes, and the old teachers!!! Jefferson needs to go out with the old and in with the new. How about we hire some male teachers around there. To many dam female teachers maybe that's y they r soft.

  17. Why are the Jefferson kids so soft. They play in an offense suited for physical kids, running a spread offense and throwing the ball will only make them softer.

  18. U guys r getting it wrong we love Cisco!!! But it is time for a young coach to come in and kick the ass of our kids. They r not getting it with Cisco. Who ever it is I don't care but get the pride back into bear country.

  19. Well, I would argue that the only reason Bear pride exist is because of Marc Cisco. I believe only 3 teams in the league have won state titles. Jefferson is one of them and Cisco was the coach.

  20. I thought Robb was an assitant coach at Canton immediately after retiring at Milan, hmmm maybe I am wrong. I do not mean to nitpick.

  21. Jefferson will be just fine. It is time for Cisco to go, he needs to realize that. There is a lot of good talent in Jeffersons program, they will be good in the next couple years and even better with a new coach. Whether it happens or not, I will tell you Jefferson still has a great fan base and always will. Jefferson is 1-5 and has more fans at their games than GI, Milan and SMCC. Wait till they get good again and see how many fans come out.
All schools have down years and all schools rebound. Nothing new.

    GO BEARS!!

    1. I agree that it's time for Cisco to go. We have tons of talent at all levels, but the kids do not want to hit. I see coach Panza and Neavaux dealing with the same thing. Kids have to want to kick the ass of the kid in front of him every time the ball is snapped. It does not matter what O u run if the kids don't do thee job it won't matter. Cisco time to give back one more time. You know what u have to do!!!
      Bear pride!!

  22. Milan can play with most D3 teams on this side minus OLSM. CC does play D5 and above. Airport has very slim shot.

    1. Really, why do you think it's your business? I don't remember Chris bringing this subject up on the highlight of this page. Stick to what you do know, NOTHING!

  23. Leadership transitions have traditionally not gone well for head coaches in football, especially in the last few years in college football. But consider what coach Robb at Milan did…after a good season, and over 25 years of coaching, handed it over cleanly to a young coach with a lot of passion.

He stayed out of coaching a year…then got back into it at another school.

So, sometimes a coach needs to tailor-make the transition. If he does not, the followers will come some day and force him out.

But I do think, for any coach who give so many years, a time of honoring should be held.

You guys over at Jefferson…whatever happens, it should be done with class.

I don't know anything about the coach you have had, but coaching is a precarious profession, tons of hours, few dollars, results driven…yet most guys do it for the love of the game and the athletes.

  24. Sadly I think it is time for Cisco to be let go. Simply way too many people in the community have quit on him, they have quit on him a long time ago. The attitude in the Jefferson community is bad though, I do not think it matters who coaches Jefferson, it will be like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. The ship is sinking, Jefferson will never be what it used to.

    1. I don't believe that. This community is just waiting for new coach. Maybe we need a new school board and a new AD. We pay the bills around here. If they don't do something about him we can do something about them.

  25. Sounding like you are in need of a little confidence boost…
You are not the worst golfer of all time! I have played with at least 2 that are as bad as you and possibly worse. Remember we did use that one drive of yours that was short of the ladies tee and that putt! haha just playing Schultzy!
Great time yesterday! Thanks for the invite!

  26. Not sure if airport will make playoffs… They'll have to pull off a shocker against Tecumseh, and on that note… Milan and Tecumseh seem to be on a second round collision course in the playoffs. That one will be interesting. As for the view, I don't think you jump the gun on a new coach. Don't be so quick to forget about the solid season the had last year.

  27. The beginning of the season, Milan was picked against nearly every game and we've proved everyone wrong! Predictions mean nothing! Go Big Reds!!!!

    1. I see Milan going deep into the playoffs. Has to be one of the best over all team Milan has put together in years. Great coaching effort from all the coaches. I see a distric win,but a tough region to win. Good luck big red.
