Clearly Milan and Grosse Ile are the two best teams in the league.
I think one of our league teams will make a deep playoff run.
Who is the best QB in the league?
Obviously some of the teams in the league are starting to focus on the winter sports season.
I don’t think Airport will make the playoffs this season.
Any thoughts on offensive and defensive players of the year?
I always enjoy rivalry week around the league.
I hate cold rain at football games.
Shouldn’t every non-baseball playing football player run track?
Best coach in the league these days?
I wish more teams in our league would run the spread.
I really enjoyed watching the best QB in the B1G thrash Nebraska last night.
SMCC will go further in the play offs if the coaches would put the d line and o line in they had the first couple of games. They were unstopable but he changed it up and it clearly is not working. TO many kids sitting the sidelines that should be playing. Im sure some other schools would love to take SMCCS talent if they are not going to use them. I guess it is true over there its all about who you know! Go Milan and Go Airport and I guess SMCC
I vote Kanitz (Milan) for best player in the league. That kid plays offense and defense, every game, nearly every position.
Friday night picks?
I keep hearing about all these great players and athletes Airport has but I dont see any results!
Scott McCormick from Airport is the best athlete in the league no matter what position or sport. And this is coming from a SMCC fan.
I will comment on this after Friday night. Go BIG REDS!!!!!!!
Your friday night comment won't change anything, he may be on a bad team, that doesn't change the fact that the kid was all region in 3 sports as a soph. Not to mention a class act.
I agree-Scott McCormick should win Monroe County Athlete of the year this year and next. Kid is very talented in all 3 sports and it doesn't matter if he play QB, WR, or Runningback.
I believe they only give that award to seniors.
^^^^prob ap player haha
I'd like to know their 3rd down completion percentage on turf please. Thanks in advance.
The best QB in the league plays wide reciever for Airport.
Okay here is what I have.
Aceves, Milan 7-0
Six games: QB rating 134, 676 passing yards with 5 TD's and 1 INT. 138 rushing yards 3 TD's
Mitroka, GI 6-1
Seven games: QB rating 135, 661 passing yards with 6 TD's and 1 INT. 613 rushing yards and 8 TD's
SMCC will go the furthest in playoffs. Milan might win a game. GI will win 2 games. If Airport makes it they're done the first game (it'll be a 9-0 team).
Chris can you get stats of GI QB, Air QB, and whoever else falls into the "best QB" category? I'm just taking a stab in the dark to say GI QB has the best stats in the league with the spread but Air QB is the better QB just in a different offense with limits. Argue all you want with that but its the truth.
All eight of those sophomores are really going to make an impact.
I wasn't going to say anymore but obviously I have to reply to what 1:36 said. My point is just when will it end. I know some of those kids are doing football and basketball right now. I know one young man doing all 3 sports. Football during week, baseball Sunday morning and Basketball Sunday afternoon. This is crazy to me. My kids are involved in a lot of sports and if I did anymore, no one in my family would have a life.
For what?? To get a edge. Come on!
What people do with their own family is there own business. I just feel its getting out of hand.
The worst thing though is that these teams are organized mostly of what the real team will be when that particular high school season starts, NOT just a pick-up league with random kids. These are organized teams. If its legal, then thats all that matters. We will focus on academics at my house, they will go farther in that anyway.
@2:52 Made me laugh, funny.
I am surprised Playon! is showing the Riverview/GI game, they usually only show small teams that nobody has ever heard of.
To 7:27 why don't you just come out and say what you mean. Teams can play in fall leagues the coaches can have nothing to do with this. And at a small school like cc there were 9th gr. thru 12th playing no football players allowed. So all the league does is give the kids who are not doing anything a chance to play. League play is a glorified open gym. So to say schools will do anything to get ahead is underlying way to say they are doing something wrong.
My son is a senior and it was just an opportunity for him to play before the season starts.
Has anyone looked at the big picture? Milan is having a good season, but they really screwed themselves by not having a JV team. The sophomores that haven't played (even if they were up on varsity standing on the sidelines). They won't be ready to play in varsity. Wearing a varsity jersey doesn't make you ready to play for varsity. The kids that sat out for the season will be a season behind. Milan broke their chances of having a back to back.
There is more to friday night than just wearing the jersey. What about scout teams at practice? Come on man! Practice practice practice.. These young guys are playing against some of the toughest and most physical players in HLC EVERY DAY. You bet they are learning. Wait and see. GO BIG REDS!!!!!!!! NOW AND THEN!!!!!!
FYI-
MSHAA game of the week!
The MHSAA's television partner, PlayOn! Sports, will be at Grosse Ile High School on Friday to cover the Grosse Ile-Riverview game.
The game will be shown the following Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.; Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.; Saturday at 3 p.m.; and Sunday at 6 p.m. on Comcast Channel 900. The game will be available online that week for Xfinity subscribers at Xfinity.com/HighSchoolSports, and highlights will also be available on the Xfinity on Demand service. The games will not be available on the MHSAA.tv website. In addition, they will have crews coming out to practice this week to shoot some footage and conduct interviews.
The freshman and JV played all summer at milan as well. Nice freshman squad at CC.
Thanks for reply on the basketball.
Just had to ask, schools get ahead any way they can now a days I guess.
Hey 12:31 This is your boss. Thanks for doing all that on your lunch break. Sounds like another Airport hater to me. Still smackin from AP beating both of you over the past 2 years. GI or Milan fan/dad…give it up! And you just gave the Airport QB more undeserved press? Pull you numbers together. What QB in the league has the most TD's? (rushing, passing, receiving) And tackles too? I don't know, you have more time than we do.
Yes SMCC and Milan are playing in the Sunday fall league in Milan with a handful of other teams.
Pretty common place around the state. Lots of fall baseball going on right now as well.
I don't believe any of the players are doing other sports right now. I'm not an expert at the rules but I'm pretty sure what they are doing is legal as long as the coaches aren't involved in any way.
I know this is a football blog, but forgive me, I bet most of you are basketball fans also. I just have to ask this, I heard this evening that there are a few Huron League basketball teams currently playing organized games on Sundays. Is this legal?? I do not have clarification if the Varsity coaches are involved or not. This seems extremely unfair to the rest of the league. Sorry for question, I figured you guys on this blog would know. Thanks
Just don't like swearing around kids. Not my style. SMCC does not run a wing T. Jefferson runs a wing T.
Kudos to the people who even want to coach nowadays, parents second guessing you more than ever, monitored more than ever, I honestly think that there are some parents who don't even watch the game, rather they watch the coach and wait for something to happen so they can file a lawsuit and win some easy money. Tom O is the perfect guy to lead Flat Rock. Things need to change around there, forgive the guy for wanting that to happen.
The wussafication of our youth! Really now were talking about swear words being used by football coaches on this blog! Really, if I told my mom and dad my football coach swore at me, they would asked what did I do wrong to deserve it. Not get upset with the coach!!!!!
Nice comment on Alabama. Every kid I know wants to go to Alabama. Guess there are no other colleges.
Point is the balance. They currently have more yards passing than rushing. Some passing keeps other teams from loading up the box. Huron league teams that get far in the playoffs almost always run into this. Milan and GI pass just enough that when they do rush, they have success. I think thats a good thing, but that is my opinion. Obviously if your going to spread it out, that needs to start in 7th grade where the QB is accustomed to passing. SMCC has success with the wing T because they work so hard on the deception, the less guys trying to tackle you, the better. That dark green uni helps too.
Right, I too haven't used a curse word in my 20 years of coaching. To me it has no place. Now I swear up a storm with my friends and what not but swearing while around 14-18 year olds just is low class.
I personally don't. I am also not a big fan of it either. Football is a different animal though. Swearing in football happens all the time. I'm not saying it is right.
From a parents perspective I would tell my child to listen to what he is saying not how he is saying it.
Obviously get your *ss in gear, stop play like a pu$$ and block you f*cking POS are all different.
One is probably okay, another pushing the line and yet another wrong.
We are way ahead in the voting. We need to keep it up or the Ann Arbor schools will sneak up on us. Thanks for the support.
Seems to me high school kids gravitate to signing with Alabama. Do they run a spread offense? They must because they are by far the best team.
Spread is cool and wonderful but I think SMCC Again will lead the league in scoring offense. They have done so probably 3/4 of the time over the last 10 years while running the T. I like the spread as well but I'm not going to argue against success. If there were talent in the league like a kater or niznak I'm sure teams would spread it out and have great success.
Should coaches curse at their players Chris?
I wouldn't want my son playing for a coach who doesn't have passion for the game. If they mess up I don't want someone patting them on the back and saying "there there"…Football isn't for mamma's boys it's for team spirit, rising above adversity, winning, losing, and boys learning that life can be tough and you have to learn to rise above it. Let's face it not everyone in this world is going to treat you with kid gloves and some of us have probably worked for bosses who have been far more abusive than any football coach out there. YOU LEARN!!!
To set here and say who's going to do what in the playoffs is speculation. Let just see what happens and support our huron league schools.
Best athletes is really based on what the player does for his team. First and forwmost should be to win games. I don;t care if you have great stats did it produce wins. I'd have to say the Milan Qb and GI Qb are at the top of that category. I also think the Milan and GI backs are there as well. Potcova gets alot of ink but I have seen him in several games and he is limited, maybe because of what AP does but still. His best and AP best outing might have been the Adrian game, but now we know they are not very good.
Coaches are good when they have talent and the blame when they don't. That has been the same forever. But there are some oaches that have much less talent and still compete.
I think football players should play year round like the other sports do. Football is the only sport that gets the shaft when it comes to that. I think Michigan should allow spring ball and non-pad practices. Otherwise all sports should be limited to their seasons. Track does help with speed and endurance.
The huron league is still a running league. The spread teams are using spread formation to get the defenses to widen out opening running lanes. It works well when your team has athletes better than the defenders in space. The pass keeps the defense honest. So make no mistake we are a run dominant league. The spread also allows for easier blocking assignments. One thing is evident in the league. Those teams that believe in one system do well. Those teams that try do to "too" many offensive systems have had less success. The spread is fun to watch and can score points if you have the talent in the skilled positions, especially a run/pass QB. After watching Milan I was impressed how physical they run the ball, Gi was pretty good as well. Some people say the spread is "soft" but I don't see that in the huron league right now. Players have to believe in the system as well and with the college level so spread oriented players gravitate toward it. It's not a balance thing. You can have balance in other system too. The spread formations make you defend the entire field even if you don;t want to. If you don't and the QB can throw some, he will hurt you.
Hoskins = COY
Flip a coin = OPY
Milan LB's = DPY
Just to burst some bubbles…..there are no division 1 players in the huron league, that hype should stop. If one should make it to D1…..awesome.
Well said. I agree totally. I coach, not high school, but grade school sports and I believe that is the coaches job. When you learn what kids are capable of, its your job to get the best out of them. That is a life lesson in my mind and one of the great things a kid/teenager can get out of participating in sports.
FR Parent…Please look at the passion and tradition he has brought back to that school thsi year.I hope he stays for a while and totally builds that program. It's going to take 5+ years to make that happen..he is the perfect choice..that guy loves FR, and is willing to make sacrifices to get it better
As a parent of a FR player I will tell you this. Coach O is doing the right things. The lessons he teaches and the things my son tell me bring a smile to my face.
His maturity is well beyond his years. I think we lose sight of this when our team is struggling, but have faith that he use the past two weeks as TEACHING tools for this coming week.
My son will be a better man because of the experience he's had this year as as senior.
Hmmm… Coaches do know what to expect from each player. So if a player isn't playing up to those expectations doesn't it make sense that the coach push that player to reach those expectations?
I am a senior player parent of FR and my son would walk through fire for Coach O and his entire staff. My son hates negativity and abuse from a coach (as experienced by Coach O's predecessor) and the one thing I have heard my son say game after game win or lose…the coaches have never berated them and have even taken the blame themselves when they lost…that doesn't mean that in the intensity of the game they don't yell but the boys are just as intense and they take it for what it is…a moment!Remember too..these boys are nearly men and I think they can take it. I am not sure what you heard but I can almost bet it was taken out of context…that team LOVES their coach..WIN OR LOSE!! As a parent…I see FR coaching staff instilling into these boy/men the LOVE OF THE GAME..something they haven't had for quite some time. For that alone FR gets my vote for coach of the year!
We will just give hugs on the sidelines now
Flat Rock coaches low class? No way! Sounds like a parent spouting off as usual. Sorry but it's true. Tommy O and his staff will not accept mediocrity. If riding a kid hard is low class the most football coaches fall into that category.
If getting into a player butt cause he's not preforming at the level coaches expect them to perform at then the coach should not be there coaching. Coaches put alot of time in with their players and know what they can and can not do. That goes for all coaches for all sports.
What?????
I was out at Carleton last Friday and Airport won by the skin of the buts against a 1-5 Jefferson team. If it wasn't for a last second, VERY fortunate play to end the half and a trick play on the first posession of the second half Airport would have lost this game for sure. Anyhow, Airport is down this year, I hope they make it, But Milan is rolling and Tecumseh is awesome. Have seen both play(no couch) In my opinion Tecumseh will beat anyone in our league, normally they are not very good, but they are very good this year.
Darn near 50/50 on the passing, running and nobody in huron league does that. Whoever plays them, work on your pass defense.
I totally agree with the spread idea. Milan and GI do this and are leading the league. I believe this will continue. Talent or not, the more balance you create the better your offense will be. It takes more practice to perfect a run game and a pass game, but every school around here that goes far in the playoffs gets beat by a team that has a spread offense and passes consistently.
Best coach in league, Hoskins without a doubt, to go from 1-8 to winning the league, who wouldn't vote for him at any level.
GO TIGERS!! Sorry, baseball fan too.
Best qb is definitely Aceves at Milan. He's only a pure passer. Kanitz plays "qb" but has 2 pass attempts on the year.
Airport is bad this year. Thats a pretty good reason.
So why the AP hate? Why can't they make the playoffs? Milan due for a loss and Tecumseh a bit over rated. Air beats one of these two. And you know nothing because no one was at Carleton last Friday.
Most of these comments about the best players are not accurate at all. I dont think one should comment unless you have seen the player play. "I think" " "I heard " doesnt cut it here folks. Lets uphold the integrity of the blog. Get off the couch, pay the $5 bucks and sit on the aluminum.
I Agree almost completely with 2:26. With two exceptions. 1. At GI a good number of the football players play Lacrosse during the spring. The two sports seem to go hand-in-hand. and 2. GI QB has great potential, but while Airport had a down season, their QB Potcova is quite an athlete. BTW, Miller rocks.
Best qb, the kid frm Milan. He clearly throws the ball better than anyone I've seen and I have seen them all.
You're right. I meant that they haven't had a large number of attempts. When they have passed, it's been very efficient.
Their throwing the ball is what beat Grosse Ile in my opinion.
Milan hasn't really had to throw much this year.
I think Aceves from Milan is right now but ironically he may not even be the best on his own team.
Clearly Milan and Grosse Ile are the two best teams in the league. -Agreed. The best team I saw so far was GI but the team with the most wins is Milan and they beat GI so gotta agree with ya on them.
I think one of our league teams will make a deep playoff run.
-I think two will…. GI should be solid for a few rounds and Milan will be ok as long as they dont run into the beast early. They need to pray for any seed away from them.
Who is the best QB in the league?
-I hate to say it but probably the new #6 from GI. "Pure" QB its the big man from AP. But actually playing in the games its gotta be GIs. From what Ive heard he has had one bad game and it was against Milan. So when he plays good GI wins. Sounds legit?
Obviously some of the teams in the league are starting to focus on the winter sports season.
-yup, too bad
I don't think Airport will make the playoffs this season.
-Me either but who knows a few good games and they "could" win out. (I just dont see it) It would be good drama if they beat Milan and the blog could argue GI or Milan as co-champs.
Any thoughts on offensive and defensive players of the year?
-Not yet but if GI has a good D there must be someone there deserving DPY and McC from AP is solid. The RB Dukes from Milan and one of the runners from GI sure deserve a look for OPY. No one else really stands out to me on O.
I always enjoy rivalry week around the league.
-Too bad the Monroe teams have nothing riding on it this year.
I hate cold rain at football games.
-wimp
Shouldn't every non-baseball playing football player run track?
-yes, and the non-basketball players should wrestle.
Best coach in the league these days?
-Giarmo or Bodner. Maybe we'll talk about Hoskins in a few years.
I wish more teams in our league would run the spread.
-or at least get away from the SAME EXACT THING every year no matter the talent or skills of the players.
I really enjoyed watching the best QB in the B1G thrash Nebraska last night.
-Ummmmmmmmmm
Just a suggestion but look at Milan Jesse Hoskins for coach and defensive player Milan #49 Blaine LeClair, nose tackle, multiple tackles, multiple sacks and 2 defensive touchdowns. Go Big REDS! !!!
The coaches from flatrock serenity really abusive towards the seniors. I was close to them and could here it. Low class. Head coach especially. Really I mean. Really?
Wow what did you hear
Yes, even non-baseball players need to run track. If u want to be a good football player u need equal strength and agility. I have a new way of thinking. The feet r ten times more important than strength. Don't get me wrong if I can get both out of a kid, I'm in. If I can only pick one ill go with good quick feet.
Chris who do think the best qb is ?
why on earth would I still be sore about that.state did when the Legends Division and went to the Big Ten title game I don't remember seen Nebraska there. I just enjoyed watching Braxton Miller the best quarterback in the Big Ten play last night
Chris still sore about Sparty getting whipped last year in Lincoln?
I do believe they should run track. They should also wrestle in the winter. It keeps them in shape and going all year so they don't lose that competitive edge.
Vote early, vote often. Thanks for the support!
Here's the direct link to vote for the Milan/Airport game from annarbor.com.
