wow!with all that said, poster4;01 p.m.I'm taking my vote back for G.i.'s great team next year and giving it to milan's big reds. no need to even suit up give title to milan. team is very impressive or so 4:01p.m. sez! we will see!
Milan is looking for a second consecutive Huron League title. I understand the reasoning that our graduation losses are too much, but look for the Big Reds to be firing on all cylinders by the time week 1 comes around. Yes, we graduated all starting offensive lineman but one, Junior #56 Jake Friese, but we have up and coming talent in the offensive line! Look for tackle #73 Chris Stanley and guard/defensive end #51 Ryan Faulkner to step in and DOMINATE on the offensive line. A sad truth about high school football is more people want to play for a winning team, so expect MUCH more depth and a larger pool of talent at every position for the Big Reds. Up and coming players to look for that'll contribute greatly next season include junior Chris Stanley, sophomore Ryan Faulkner, sophomore Joshua Colville, sophomore Ryan Anguilm, junior Erik Randall…the list goes on! An offense spearheaded by QB/RB Robert Kanitz and a talented group of WR's and TE's along with a defense also led by LB's Robert Kanitz, Austin Hoover, and CB CJ Duffiney will be almost IMPOSSIBLE to stop! Graduation losses are very heavy, but the Big Red machine is just a chuggin' along just fine folks, all it needed was a little hard work to get it runnin' again! Expect a 7-2 or 8-1 season out the of the Big Reds and a repeat as Huron League champions!
I watched a lot of the Huron League games and here are my impartial thoughts.Milan two years ago had a tough year due to a lack of seniors. last year those underclassmen were all seniors and they had a great season. Now , with so many kids graduating, they will be down a little. Riverview will be much better. only had five seniors on the team last year, one of them started. The whole offense returns, and the whole defense returns. both units had four sophmores starting and one freshman starting at Middle linebacker(tyler chase). The addition of Trentons leading tackler will help. Grosse isle will be solid with mitroka and the spread option, but they lose some solid starters as well. Flat rock will be dismal, Airport will be solid with strong jv unit moving up. Team success in Huron league is dependent on strong senior classes. that seems to be the measuring stck for success and im sure past performance mirrors that.
If I am right in my history, Chad Baas was a starter for Airport at Safety and Running back as a Junior and Senior 02-03, Airport went Undefeated during both of those regular seasons, and I think he was Region Defensive MVP as a senior
hey milan guys…quit hating on chris for his 2012 picks about milan. there was absolutely NO HYPE that they would have any success this season so he picked them to do poorly. although GI was picked at 3-6 too…
I'm sorry did I miss something? What exactly did he do at GI? Should we be crediting Bodner or Whitehouse? I find it funny that people are worried that an assistant that hasn't won anything is going to an under achieving D1 school. Did he lead GI to a huron league title? A state tite? I remember when you had to win something! Ah, the good old days.
9:38, I think you touched on the wild card for GI…someone (or 2) in that group will need to have a break out year. Maybe another surprise in the frosh/soph class?…time will tell.
Regardless, GI seems to accel in their style spread when the backs compliment. Featuring a single back didn't work so well in the early Teen years (amoungst other things and no disrespect to Teen).
Sitofn, McCarthy, Vollmerhousen, and McAughey all are pretty good backs. Most teams would love to have three RBs all with good ability. I agree that the RBs may not be the strength of the team. But they will be very good. Will even be better if somehow they can get Wyatt Force back. That OL will be very solid, and this offense will continue to put up big numbers next year.
GI will strong next year….however this is the first time in several years the backfield may not be their strength.
Why?…since the Oh-for years they have always had a formidble QB (White/Mitroka) and a RB double threat (Teen/Church, Kish/Nelly, Nelly/Christian). That luxury is not likely next year. Mitroka will have to shoulder a big load for the backfield.
Line and QB will be strong and D should be good but backfield depth on both sides will need a surprise standout (or two) for GI to have another strong HL and playoff run.
Over time however, the HL has had better programs than the DRL. 5 of the 8 teams in the HL have better than a .500 winning % while only 4 of 10 from the DRL hold better than .500.
Of course the Downriver League is better but the schools are much larger than the Huron League. They have more students to choose from. The Downriver League ranges in size from Woodhaven (1520) to Trenton(898)compared to the Huron League which Ranges from Riverview (966) to SMCC (437)
I have a friend who is a on a coaching staff in the Downriver League. We get in arguments all the time about which is a tougher league. He swears up and down that the DRL is a better football conference than the Huron League. What are your thoughts??
Anybody picking Airport in the bottom half of the league is not too smart. The trenches and running game will be MUCH improved next year. Milan will fall back to middle of the pack, lights got TOO BRIGHT once the playoffs started.
9:27 has it bout right. Jefferson won't be better than cc. Airport has no receivers and 1 returning rb. If McCormick is qb than who catches? Back to the wing T and hope they have some D.
What are the non league schedules for each team. I know that does not impact league standings, but I am just wondering if there will be any big matchups in week 1 or 9??
GI returning players have been there for the past 2 long playoff runs. Playoff rums equal lots of extra practice, big time games, and experience in general. Return some really good talent and some good players coming up. They will be very good. This group has won many games starting in the DJFL up until now.
Milan Grosse Ile Jefferson SMCC Huron Airport Riverview Flat Rock
Milan and Grosse Ile programs will continue to do well. Jefferson had a lot of hurt players. SMCC's best seniors will be playing fall ball again. Huron sounds as though they will make a run, should be right there. Riverview is good at times, if they show up and play hard, could do better than this. Flat Rock sounds like its going to be a down year. Losing a lot of talent, doesn't sound like much coming back.
CC will not be finishing 4th I can guarantee you that. Those kids playing fall ball wouldn't be playing over the junior class anyway. The next two years they may field more talent then any team they've had in 20 years. Giarmo has the hammer back, i hope everyone has enjoyed the last 2 years, because he's about to start swinging!
I am not at all a Milan fan, but they have a second year coach, he put in a new offense in his first year and they struggled, now that they know it, they are doing well with it. I believe their system is a good one and they will have a lot of success in the years to come.
JV not much of a factor because the very best sophmores were on varsity anyway, and getting plenty of exposure against the big boys.
1 more year without a JV, that could be a problem. Give credit to an up and coming program. Jefferson, please do the same.
How bout a little more credit and encouragement to teams trying to rise to the top instead of the same old credit to the same old teams.
Weightlifting changed the face of the league for awhile in the early 90's until all schools started doing. Spread offenses will change the face of the league in the 2010's.
Geez 4:05 season hasnt even started yet and you are putting down the SMCC kids already. Size dosnt matter talent does. Remember the boys do read this blog and you only make them work harder when you put them down so I guess thank you.
Whitehouse would be a solid choice for Airport. I agree with your top 3, CC and GI should be real strong and Airport will be better. Milan will take a step back after heavy graduation losses. EM
Wow! Everyone trying to stir up trouble already. Most of us have no idea on this, but I guess predicting is fun. We all know the ins and outs of our local team and where our kids go to school, but I doubt any of you know the ins and outs of every team.
Milan will repeat. their system and coaching staff has surpassed the rest, new offense is in place know, as long as they have decent kids it will work. GI will be strong again. New system keeps improving. CC is the 2nd coming I guess, so good they will beat everyone, We'll see how they do against full sized teenagers in Varsity programs. Jefferson had many hurt kids and kids shuffled to different levels, if intact next year, will be very good. Airport could be rough, not real good this year and not looking good for next.
Thats the only teams I happen to know something about, can't comment on rest, didnt see much of them.
Who will be coaching at Airport? Does Stergalas make any staff changes? Does Huron have what it takes to be in the top half next year? These are questions I have.
Milan will compete..they will have transfers come in from lincoln willow run and all over…Riverview will be back..SMCC will win the league..GI will be down a tad..Jefferson will surprise people..Airport wins 4 games..Huron could be very solid..FR won't win a league game for 2 years
Riverview has 30+ returning kids, with that experience and the addition of Junior linebacker Jacob Walsh they'll a great chance to win the huron league.
Well….Milan graduates 21 seniors including my two Player of the Year picks. No JV team really hurts the depth of Milan and it is really tough to ask kids who played freshmen ball to jump all the way to varsity in one season.
Flat Rock graduates 22 seniors from a 31 man roster that went 4-5. My Alma Mater may be hard pressed to win a game next season.
Riverview has most of their skill and speed players back although they must figure out how to defend people.
SMCC is loaded, GI will be tough again. Airport will at least have some stability to go with some solid talent and Huron could have possibly their best team ever.
Of course this is just one man's opinion. Please remember though, nobody outside of Milan picked the Big Reds to do anything this season.
Milan has standout quarterback/ linebacker Robert Kanitz coming back along with many offensive skill players; Gage Smith, Steven Phifer and Devin Miller. Linebacker/ Halfback/ Kicker Austin Hoover coming back. Cornerback CJ Duffney has two more years. They have All-State Special Mention Head Coach Jesse Hoskins. They're being ranked low in the league again…. Everyone knows how correct that was last year….
Kanitz is a nice talent, but will find running lanes harder to come by with a less talented offensive line.
wow!with all that said, poster4;01 p.m.I'm taking my vote back for G.i.'s great team next year and giving it to milan's big reds. no need to even suit up give title to milan. team is very impressive or so 4:01p.m. sez! we will see!

That's true, no Huron League title.
hey milan guys…quit hating on chris for his 2012 picks about milan. there was absolutely NO HYPE that they would have any success this season so he picked them to do poorly. although GI was picked at 3-6 too…
cliff whitehouse has recently accepted a offensive coordinator position at monroe high school…who does that leave for airport?
I'm sorry did I miss something? What exactly did he do at GI? Should we be crediting Bodner or Whitehouse? 4:30…All GI back conbos had a lead and compliment, what's your point or do you got an axe to grind? Sounds like sour grapes to me.
Great news Chris….glad you'll be back.
SITOFN
Sorry bud, I'm not going to post that garbage.
So SITOFN you claim that there was the Teen/Church combo…. Correct me if I am wrong but I'm positive Church remaind in Teen's shadow…
You haven't played in the past so why start next year either
9:38, I think you touched on the wild card for GI…someone (or 2) in that group will need to have a break out year. Maybe another surprise in the frosh/soph class?…time will tell.

I don't know. I beleive he played for much of the existing staff. I would assume they will stay.
What is his coaching background? Is he bringing in any of his own staff?
Very good athlete from Airport about 10 years ago.
Who is Chad Baas? What is his background like?
Chad Baas New Airport HC
Who did Airport announce as their new coach? Who is he and what is the story on him?
Over time however, the HL has had better programs than the DRL. 5 of the 8 teams in the HL have better than a .500 winning % while only 4 of 10 from the DRL hold better than .500.

Whitehouse leaving GI for Monroe coordinator job. Big loss for GI.
Riverview's out-of-leauge games are Crestwood week 1, and Summit Academy week 9.
9:27 has it bout right. Jefferson won't be better than cc. Airport has no receivers and 1 returning rb. If McCormick is qb than who catches? Back to the wing T and hope they have some D.

Speed kills!!!
Take a peek at where the Huron League coaches along with the Detroit News and Free Press picked them.
I will say this again, only people from Milan picked them to win the league and those people do it every year because it is their team.
You picked them first two years ago and they finished 1-6 in the league and 1-8 overall.
Congratulations to Ross and Nellenbach from GI… Ross was first team all state for D3-4 from the Detroit News and Nellenbach was honorable mention
I wonder if Milan will throw more next year. All three receivers are coming back as well as Kanitz. Should have a decent tight end too.
chris, just read you "2012 predictions" great call on milan going 2-7. LOL
Airport has sneaky talent with mccormick at QB
Geez 4:05 season hasnt even started yet and you are putting down the SMCC kids already. Size dosnt matter talent does. Remember the boys do read this blog and you only make them work harder when you put them down so I guess thank you.
Too much turmoil at airport. Talent, not coaching, got them to the playoffs. Need a good offense coach. V has the D covered. 4-5 next year.
guessing 4:05 is from Milan.. haha
Whitehouse would be a solid choice for Airport. I agree with your top 3, CC and GI should be real strong and Airport will be better. Milan will take a step back after heavy graduation losses. EM

Chris,
Here are my questions…
Will Milan be better next year?
Will Huron ever become a 1st tier team?? Seems like they have talent every year just something missing..
Will Riverview be back?
Will GI be down next year? Can they win the league?
Will Cisco ever retire? Do they have talent next year?
Will Whitehouse or Anderson get the job at Airport? Can those young guys win?
Will Flat Rock ever be good? Can they ever make the playoffs?

GI comes to Navarre… that should be the difference.
That would be a solid hire. He has been good over at GI.
Is that a hire that will put Airport at the top of the league?
My pick for Airport would be Clif Whitehouse but that is just a hunch.
Who will be coaching at Airport? Does Stergalas make any staff changes? Does Huron have what it takes to be in the top half next year? These are questions I have.

Agree with the first two, but differ on others. Milan and Flat Rock will finish higher than you have; Riverview will finish lower than you have.
How can you put the 2012 Huron League Champions 6th?
