Huron League Thoughts and Questions

That was a nice tribute to Huron’s Jimmy Williams last night over at Summit Academy.

Was Riverview’s defense that good or was Crestwood that bad?

I hope Milan’s Rober Kanitz and Ryan Faulkner are okay.

Will Flat Rock win a game?

Is SMCC’s Craig Couturier the best player you have never heard of?

Panic at Airport?

Can Milan hang on and win?

Andrew Mitroka looks like he can throw the ball this year.

Looks like the “Big 3” in the league are as good as advertised, the rest not so much.

That is a big number that Jefferson lost by.

Huron’s Matt Hartwick is an offensive beast.

Grosse Ile should have opened with Gabriel Richard while Flat Rock should have played Annapolis.

The fans picked SMCC to win the league, so did the coaches and so did I.

Who is better Marcus Samuels or Josh Smith? I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Huron League game of the week next Friday?

  1. Exactly, what else is there to do in the city. The rest of us are doing useful things at 8:00 in the evening. Besides dial-up takes too long. lol. Craig, go to bed, you shouldn't be on the internet at 1 am.

  2. Quite possibly, the use of the word there when it should be their, may have been the first tip off on the kid comment. Scholarships are given to those who can both play AND spell.

  3. I for one get tired of the SMCC kids having to get on here and toot there own horn. Let the adults use the blog and you kids stick to twitter. lol

  4. I think 11:57 was just making a statement not calling any one out. SMCC always blows this team away so I think you cant judge anyones playing abilities from that game. I don't think that they were saying he wasn't good just saying its hard to judge because it was such a blow out. So relax.

  5. This is by far the best game as far as talent but riverviews military appreciation game should be interesting. I hear Allen park does some cool things during theirs.

  6. SMCC blew away the Detroit team. So of course your going to hear names you have never heard of and might not the trest of the season because Jack played his second and third string most of the game.

  7. I don't think it was. On first down they took a knee, which resulted in 2nd and 12. They faked a power and threw the ball down field on a one man route. I thought it was good football. Huron got the ball and took a knee on first down which resulted in 2nd and 12 then played on. I'm not a big fan personally of Summit but everything they did that night was admirable and sportsman like. As someone who know Jimmy very well and coached him, I was truly touched by Summit's show of support.

Last year's QB is the 3rd string QB. Good player but just has a couple of quality guys in front of him. Eli transferred from UD Jesuit but has lived in the district his whole life. Hartwick moved in from Milan to Huron Township. He was the QB on MIlan's freshman team last season.

  8. They were very athletic. Extremely athletic QB, RB and WR. The DT's both went 300lb, so it was rough sledding in the middle. Not much room to run. The score was 13-6 at the half but Huron seemed in charge. The 2nd play of the game was a 70 yard bomb for Summit. That came right after the Jimmy Williams tribute on the first play. The whole place had tears in their eyes except for maybe the Summit QB and WR who completed the play. I think Summit only crossed the 50 yard line once after the score and that was in the 1st qtr. Huron didn't seem to show too much offensively. Senior Eli Scott only threw a handful of passes. He split time with sophomore Matt Hartwick who pretty much ran wild while playing half the game. I'm not sure if they plan to rotate QB's in the future. Huron had quite a few kids carry the ball and I don't know if that will continue down the road either.

Summit was better than years past and the coach runs some pretty cool offensive sets. He tried to use their athleticism as much as possible.

  9. To anonymous…. 9/1 @ 12:13 am.

The offense is not the problem so please use better logic. Using your logic they should be just fine…… FR has the same sized kids as GI and they run the spread and dominate offensively. PS… If you understood how offenses work you would understand even more how your comment makes no sense.

Give them time. It is a young team with a new coach. Your JV comment…. I'm sure every kid that would contribute to the varsity is already on varsity. I'm also sure as the year goes on a few more will get pulled up as needed. "Talented" JV kids are already on varsity the rest are JV kids for a reason.

  10. FR has good young talent coming up. A few things they need. #1. Stability- Oestrike is all in and he loves the kids. Bill Belicheck wouldn't win a game there this year. He is a respected coach in the league, I guarantee if he keeps hearing BS like that and getting hate messages, he will be gone, just like every other coach they've had, they need to do everything and anything to keep him there. All coaches go there and get burned out because of the parents and lack of support, not to mention the poundings they take. He will learn and make them competitive. It's going to take time, a lot of time like 5+ years.
#2. Patience- They are implementing a new system this year, with kids they had to pull out of the hallway to have a team. Basically they have a JV team at the varsity level.
#3. Patience- yes, again patience. This is my advice to the coaches. 🙂

  11. Why can't Flat Rock dominate? You don't have the players period! The Rams haven't had a tradition of winning since the 70's. Give the guy time to build the program. You don't win games with only a couple of seniors and kids who have never really played. If you brought the JV players up they would only get crushed and lose their spirit. Let them have some success on the JV, mature for a year by getting bigger, stronger and faster, then let them compete. Scheme is not the problem. Every scheme used in high school football these days has been successful. Do everyone a favor and just support your kid's coach. Nobody needs a dad who thinks they know better than the coaching staff.

  12. Riverview/Milan Game will be the game of the week. MILITARY Appreciation Game, Even if you don't like the teams it will be touching for the folks that we part of the United States Military.

    Rah!

  13. FR needs to change their offense. We have the same size kids as SMCC. They run the T and dominate. Why can't we? The spread is nice but you have to have the kids to run it. Also, they need to bring up the JV kids. They have more talent on the JV then they do on the Varsity.

  14. While they have some work to do, it's too soon for Airport to panic. The good i took from last night was that the run defense looked solid, which is a must in this league. The best game this week looks like GI-Huron. What happened to Kanitz and Faulkner? EM

  15. Game of the week next week will be Riverview V. Milan. Army Appreciation Game, plus it'll start to decide where the league title is gonna end off.

  16. Was Riverview's defense that good or was Crestwood that bad?
-I can't believe you're asking that. That's like saying is everyone Lincoln park plays that good or…..

I hope Milan's Rober Kanitz and Ryan Faulkner are okay.
    -what happened?

Will Flat Rock win a game?
    -hopefully week 9

Is SMCC's Craig Couturier the best player you have never heard of?
-not sure, I havnt heard of any of the people we are comparing him to yet.

    Panic at Airport?
-silly question. Of course there is.

Can Milan hang on and win?
-why did the game get postponed?

Andrew Mitroka looks like he can throw the ball this year.
-he threw just fine last year so that's a good thing for GI.

Looks like the "Big 3" in the league are as good as advertised, the rest not so much.
    -we will see next week.

That is a big number that Jefferson lost by.
    -yes it was.

Huron's Matt Hartwick is an offensive beast.
-appeared that way but. Yet again, we will see next week.

Grosse Ile should have opened with Gabriel Richard while Flat Rock should have played Annapolis.
-agree but GR wont play GI anymore.

The fans picked SMCC to win the league, so did the coaches and so did I.
-they are gonna be good but we will see when they play Huron and GI. There's just something about Huron I like and the GI group of kids has beat this group of CC kids more than CC has (JV and V) for the first time I can remember. Who knows maybe that means something??

Who is better Marcus Samuels or Josh Smith? I guess it doesn't really matter.
-as long as they are both back there it doesn't matter.

Huron League game of the week next Friday?
    -easy…. Huron v GI

  17. I like the Riverview is back comment on the friday night scores post. Crestwood hasnt had a winning season in 6 years; last year went 2-7 and year before that, 3-6. The real contest of the league starts next week, and then we'll see if Riverview is for real or not when they play Milan.

What I want to know is, will Airport stand with the league this year or not? I know Adrian is a playoff team, but will they contend?

Good question for Huron; are they practicing field goal attempts? I saw last night a few different times on a 3 and out; in field goal range, they went for it. I like anyone else at that game, heard the foot from that kicker, it has a monsterous boom behind it.. Would love to see a field goal come from it at some point in time this season!

Huron League game of the week next week? Huron vs. Grosse Ile, seem with a win for Huron it could very well set them off for a playoff run. Maybe not who knows but itll be a game to watch!!!
