Huron League Thoughts and Questions

I will not pick against Milan again until they let me down.

Mitroka for President?

Congratulations to Airport’s Chad Baas on his first victory.

How good is SMCC?

Apparently the defense at Riverview isn’t as good as some thought.

You won’t beat anyone throwing four interceptions.

Nice to see Jefferson throwing the ball a little bit.

I don’t see my Alma Mater winning a game.

Does Airport’s Scott McCormick sell popcorn at halftime?

Hats off to Riverview for honoring the Armed Forces last night.

Freshman Trace Lindeman? Are you freaking kidding me? That is awesome!

Game of the week next Friday?

I could be headed north to Oakland County to see some high scoring offense next week.

Apparently the defense at Riverview isn’t as good as some thought. Wait, did I say that already?

Nice crowd on Fantasy Island last night although they were fashionably late.

Is it true that SMCC starts sixteen non-seniors? Yikes!

What is harder to come by, good superintendents or good football coaches? I think everyone in Milan knows that answer!

  1. I too encourage people to stop being devisive and negative. Its one thing to offer constructive criticism, its another to issue blanket judgmental statements about the players or their futures and spout petty otherizing comments. You never know a young man's potential. And shouldn't this community be wishing them the best as they dream, develop their skills, and look toward the future instead of speculating on potential limitations?!

Particularly offensive are the comments alluding to a separation between the GI QB (or any other young young man who happens to have been a playmaker in a particular game) and another section of that team; you forget that it takes a team. These kids haven't forgotten that; and we shouldn't either. They sacrifice for each other and they realize that when one person doesn't give his 110%, something falls apart, something never comes to fruition. The support each other's growth and accomplishments before, during, and after the game. And their community should encourage that. They work together to succeed. And they have succeeded. THEY know defense and offense work together to get the job done. They PROVE that game in and game out. Why should we drive a wedge that isn't there? These young men are: multiseason-athletes and students, (boy)friends and brothers, sons, and even employees. They juggle schedules and shoulder stressors at 16 that grown adults struggle with. Bravo to them for doing it with grace and bravo for meeting success with humility and team spirit. What an example you set! Keep it up!

Of course we should hail the acconplishments of deserving individuals. Recognitizing demonstrated skill, heart, and potential does not forget the team structure that facilitated someone's success. If anything, its a testiment of appreciation for it. Let's not give our GI boys any reason to think we see a divides among them that they don't have. If you pushed hard and got your job done to help your team to victory, we saw it -your coaches see it from the sidelines and we see it from the stands, we see it in your faces, we see it on the score board, and we see it in the men you're becoming.

    LETS GO GI!!

  2. None taken Chris…just watching the blog on the sidelines a bit more.

I'll try to throw $0.02 worth in here and there….

  3. No kids in the league anymore but love the HL. You do a great job Chris. Don't let the haters bring you down. So here is the but…. There are kids being mentioned here that get the praise of a pro player. Some not so deserving. It's not good. It cheapens the blog. There are no spectacular D1 players here at all. The retoric is ramped up for sure…but…its your blog.

  4. Whoooa GI faithful…what gives.

IT sure sounds like someone has some serious "sand in their shorts" concerning Mitroka accomplishments vs GI D….Stage door DAD if you ask me.

Be happy that you're not part of the Oh-4 stretch for 2 years or you would really have your panties in a bunch!!

Chris has been more than a "gentleblogger" to allow the GI D rants vs Mitroka and I stand embarrassed for GI that someone doesn't know when to LET GO.

Yuall better start worrying about SMCC, AIR, Milan, and Riverview (if they find a D) instead of arguing about who/what is more important for GI football.

Winds of change are gone…change is HERE and NOW and I for one am enjoying football success at GI.

Here we go GI…HERE WE GO!

  5. Coach Bodner lost 20 in a row to start his career at GI. He knows how rough it can be. I think FR is headed in the right direction. 99-19 yes that is insane, but they have their 1-8 JV team who beat summerfield by 7 last year and 4 seniors, one that played as a junior. That's all they have. Bodner has been in that boat. You will see FR get better throughout the year, I doubt they win a game, but they will become more competitive

  6. I knew Flat Rock would have a rough season with the huge graduation blows of Chickeral, Knoch, and Blosser but wow 99-19 in two weeks? That's insane! Not sure if the physicality of those 3 could help these guys. 0-9 for sure!

  7. Hey, KC. Let's take a look at a defense that's scored more TD's on the year than the offense, MSU.. Also, you can't lose if the other team doesn't score. Defense Wins Championships, offense puts fans in the stands.

Slow your roll there buddy. This is HIGH SCHOOL football; not NCAA. There are some great defensive teams in HS Ball, but even better offenses..

Jennifer Moores has to be the most respected HL I've ever met.. None can argue that what she said is not nothing but true.

  8. As a parent of a kid who has been blessed with size and speed, I've my fair share of people, usually adults, taking digs at my kid when he played well or said that he "touched the ball too much". Actually, I find that it is the parents who would take the cheap shots behind his back……or often times, right to his face. His young teammates were the supportive ones. This is just as true with QB Mitroka. The blogmaster, his coach, the newspapers, etc. are the ones giving the shout-out, I don't see Mitroka taking out any billboards with his accomplishments (are you, Andrew?). I do see people go out of their way to dismiss and I even know a few who would rather die than give a compliment out to another player, in fear that the recruiting Gods will hear them and not draft their boy!

I get it, game after game after game, you hear the same names. Maybe a little bit of props for some others. Many of our guys had a spectacular game, and others on Huron as well. But, it's no different than in college or pro football. I'm sure Reggie's mama is proud of him today, too.
Give credit where credit is due. If your kid isn't getting enough praise through blogs or newspaper articles, and that really upsets you, start your own. If you are a player, go do some homework or something.
Anyway, if you are going to be man (or woman) enough to be shady at a high school kid (or any young player of any sport) who likes to play the game, has been a good friend and teammate, then be man enough to sign your name at the bottom. I'm signing mine.

  9. Huron turned the ball over 4 times and gives it up on downs twice inside GI's 30 yard line and it is all GI's defense yet when GI turns the ball over it is their own fault? That makes perfact sense. You must be a parent.

  10. GI lost games back then cause they didnt have much athletic ability besides a few players to run that offense. The defense was also terrible. Sorry really didnt see any great ability on that Huron team. Really thought from what I was hearing they would be a better team. Game could have been 35-3 but for the dumb pass play (interception on the 1st and goal) from the 2 yard line. However hope they beat SMCC.

  11. I think Huron has a a really good team. It seems to me, they are learning a new offense and this takes time. When Bodner first introduced the spread option, GI lost a bunch of games. This is complex and has long learning curve. Give Huron some time. They certainly have the talent.

    a GI parent

BTW, whoever is trying to get the "love" for the GI defense, needs to realize that they sound whiny. Let the defense speak for itself. It will!

  12. Hey, KC. Let's take a look at a defense that's scored more TD's on the year than the offense, MSU.. Also, you can't lose if the other team doesn't score. Defense Wins Championships, offense puts fans in the stands.

  13. Mitroka is GI's team..they mix in a few passes to kids that are wide open because of his running. He is a stud and the best athlete in the HL..

  14. Hey, the Milan O looked strong.

Folks might say RV D played badly, but Milan had some surprising big plays, 50 and 60 yards, passes and runs and a well-called offensive game. They just jumped all over RV quickly and RV never recovered.

RV showed some quality stops and offense when they staged a come back with two sustained drives to make it a 20-13 game with 6 min. left in first half. But then the Milan freshman broke a long one and that was was a will-breaker. RV came out 2nd half looking like a different team–deflated.

Milan D made adjustments and the RV O did very little in the 2nd half.

  15. If there wasnt posters on here gving Chris some feedback(whether founded or not) this blog wouldnt be half as good. Chris can take it. Bring it.

  16. People are just mad that their super star child didn't shine as greatly.. Do they really think without Mitroka that they would have beat Huron, or even being competing in the league? Huron was puzzled and couldn't get it together with Mitroka just moving the ball left and right over their defense. Huron was caught off guard, and it showed.. I'm a die hard Huron fan, and win or lose, I will still support them but Mitroka was the star of the game last night and its safe to say without him, Huron would've very well beaten GI in Friday nights game.. I've never really gotten why people say "Defense Wins Championships" because without an Offense, there is no score; so no championship.. Gi has some decent players, but none that carried the team.. Huron's QB tried to be like Mtroka, but it takes skill to do what he did Friday night..

  17. Well, now they're quoting Bear Bryant on me. I probably bring it on myself by allowing people to post anonymously but hey hiding behind a computer is human nature;) and quite frankly I can take it.

  18. Sheeeeeesh. I said one thing about #6. You are the one that won't let it go. I simply respond. So I shall respond again. Obviously it takes a team to win but every very good or great team has a star. He is it and I'm sure his team mates are cool with that. Just like I'm sure the UM players are cool with DG. Done yet?

  19. Ok Chris….. We get it #6 was good last week and is very important to the team. He's the QB in the read option of course he is the most important player on the offense. BUT I didn't see him make a single tackle in the shut out, kick or recover a single onside kick, intercept a single pass in the shut out, get a single sack in the shut out or run any of the plays that are used to set up His runs. No one will argue he is the most important player on the team just like Scotty Mac, Kanitz, Smith/Samuels etc…. but he is not why they won (this time.) Huron was supposed to be very good this year and they got shut out (not counting a FG) out coached and pretty much handled all game. #6 did not do that. The TEAM won the game and #6 did what he is supposed to do in that style of an offense…… be patient until the other team makes a mistake and make them pay for it and he is VERY good at that. They are a well coached, skilled all around team with a QB that is perfect for their offense…… just like White was. White had a great arm and ran like a rhino, #6 has a very good arm and runs like a gazelle. The def and special teams are just consistently better now. Not "better" per say but consistently better. ie) They don't make many mistakes anymore.

PS…. If the RBs and WRs weren't so consistent he would be no where near as dominant. If others players can't block, catch or run it is not hard to stop one person. (Ask the former GI QB #6 or all the teams that are trying to implement the spread or read option how much different this offense is with or without other skill players and a line).

  20. Geez, you keep calling me out. I did see the game. Mitroka was the reason you won. That is my opinion. If he doesn't play, GI loses. You can't say that about any other player. The defense was good but Huron did move the ball up and down the field. To GI's credit hey kept them out of the end zone.

  21. I agree 6:41PM. Thought the GI defense was a bigger reason for the victory the other night other than one player. They created four turnovers and made a good offense look lost. The defensive starters haven't allowed a touchdown yet. The Mitroka hype wagon does need to chill. Even the picture in the News Herald says its "Andrew Mitroka" but look at it, its #5-Joe Vollmerhousen. Bunch of crap. Come on Chris you saw the game.

  22. Please Chris talk about someone else on that GI, frankly a lot of us GI people are getting sick of all the talk this kid is getting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
