  1. The rulebook allows state associations to make modifications to any rule. I know in CO, our state association has not made an explicit change to the rules, so it should be followed here. However, MI may have decided to allow defenders to run the football out of the end zone. Either way, from the response you got from the official, it is voided by the inadvertent whistle.

  2. Interesting, I have seen two interceptions that were over 100 yards long. But check out the MHSAA records under this link. Specifically look for Interceptions for TD's (longest). They are all 100 yards long. Nothing beyond that. I know Troy Wiseley's from Flat Rock in 1981 was over 100 yards. I was at the game yet it is listed as 100.

I would venture to guess that rule has been in place for quite some time and officials (and fans) don't know the rule. So anytime something is listed longer than 100 yards, they list it as 100 because of the rule.

I stand corrected on the rule. Incidently in talking with officials from the game. He claimed it was an inadvertant whistle. Hmmmmmm!

  3. I'm not sure when the rule changed. I took a teaching/coaching football class in college (Spring 2003) and our only textbook was the NFHS rulebook. I read the whole thing and the interception in the end zone rule stood out to me at the time and I remember it whenever there is a game I'm coaching in that involves an INT in the end zone.

  4. An interception in the endzone is an automatic touchback in high school football. Rule 8, Article 3, Section d: A forward pass is intercepted in B's end zone and becomes dead there in B's possession. Iowa High School Athletics Association posted last years rulebook on their website.

Interceptions in the end zone have been a touchback as long as I have been coaching and I have had arguments with officials who don't know the rulebook and allow players to run the ball out of the end zone. Sounds like the Huron/FR officials made the right call. I wish I had officials like that for all my games.

  5. That must be a new rule because as long as I can remember, you can return an interception out of the endzone in high school. Quite frankly I think your mistaken.

You cannot return a kick once it reaches the end zone. That has been a rule forever in high school.

I have no idea what happened at the Flat Rock – Huron game, but if the ball was intercepted in the end zone then it is a touch back and the refs have to blow it dead. A kick/punt in the end zone, interception in the EZ, fumble recovery in the EZ all are touchbacks in high school football.

But maybe that is not what happened

Just watched that onside in slow motion on film and no Jefferson player close enough to touch it until after #12 on SMCC comes up on it before it goes 10 yards. It hits him in the hands, then the helmet, then #58 for Jefferson sticks him and balls falls to the ground. Jefferson recovered. Not sure what the refs saw on that.

  8. All you CC fans that say the on side kick call was a good one, watch Hudl clip #130(on the Jefferson app, I'm sure you CC fans have something similar). Clear as day, the Refs got it WRONG.

  9. "Just sad to think that a team who is 1-7 competed and only lost by 2 scores"

Why is this sad for you, a Huron guy?

It is a rivalry game, Jefferson and CC almost always play each other tough. Throw out the records.

Jefferson has some players, they are just going through some changes and it is always lumpy at the start.

  10. KC,

That was one guy saying they dominated view. I quickly came on and said they did not. I don't think the guy who made that comment or comments "rates" anyone. Again, 7-1 speaks for itself. You cannot possibly be overrated after 8 games when your record is 7-1. Your rating is 7-1. No other way to look at it.

LCC may beat CC and they may not. You don't think CC can win another high scoring game? If not, why?

  11. Sorry to hear about Tom Hudson. I knew him well. Did not see much of him in recent years. Didn't know he was sick. He will be missed at CC.

  12. GI View game was fun to watch! Best 5 bucks I've spent in the last couple months..

Credit to GI for producing a thriller of a game when practically everyone thought View would win comfortably. Credit especially to Vollmerhausen for puuting on a fire works show, man that kid is explosive, fun to watch.

On the other hand, a win is a win, but Riverview shouldn't be proud of last night's game. Not being able to stop a beaten up GI offense, the View D looked rather pathetic.. The Offense on the other hand looked good like it always does, but that won't always win games like it did last night, especially in the playoffs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Offense puts fans in the stands. Defense wins games.

  13. SMCC lost a great friend last night…..maybe part of the reason for a quiet fan base. He did a lot for the football program and Coach Giarmo. You will be missed, Tom Hudson! Prayers and hugs to your family.

  14. Hey guys, we Jefferson folks got to fuel that fire every now and then. Its fun to go back and forth, this could go on and on.

I know many of you and theres no need for that. Congrats on a good game last night. We were disappinted in that onside call, film does say different, BUT, nothing we can do about that now.

Good luck the rest of the way. Jefferson QB is a gamer. So is #7.

There was some anger when I was on last night. Perhaps we should have the 24hour rule for the blog. LOL

  15. bn,

I say overrated because for the last 2 weeks, games CC has played, they've been high scoring games. If you look at their starting games, and how they're finishing, they're just handing out points and the defense is giving up. Just sad to think that a team who is 1-7 competed and only lost by 2 scores, and half the CC fans still come and say "CC is dominate" like last week against RV. Can agree, or disagree. Just my .02; all I know is if they play like they have been, they'll add another L against Lansing Catholic.

    KC

  16. Lol, I like refering to him as #7, I may do that for the rest of our season that by the way doesn't end next week like yours! Your tougher QB led you straight to a 1-8 season, better luck next year!

  17. "Jeffersons QB is a senior. Definitely tougher than #7."

I give your guy credit and you cut on mine.. sheesh, rather uncalled for, no?

  18. Question KC,

How can you call a team overrated after 8 games, who is 7-1, losing to the champ by 7?

By this point the record should speak for itself, don't you think?

  19. 11:15. That coach with a state title on his resume was way before the spread. Sorry to say, he's refused to change or adjust. Very stubborn as is the figureheads that put him there. Accolades for bringing the program back — now go out an hire a d coordinator and sit back like Brady hoke (no headset) and be the manager/ head coach. Only way the view ever gets deep into playoffs ever again.

  20. Jefferson is 1-7? Do not blame the refs please. Lost because your team is just flat out bad. Jeffersons best effort and best game of the year got beat by smcc's worst performance of the year. Hang your hat on that is you want. Terrible game by smcc, without a doubt worst ive seen all year. Much better team than theyve shown the last two weeks. Time to step up against real teams. Jefferson surely does not count. Lumen Christi game will be very tough unless they start playing.

  21. The CC fans were not cheering because they lost another senior captain on the last play of the game. This time to a broken leg. As for the onside kick…the ball hit a Jefferson player before it traveled 10 yards.

  22. The CC fans were not cheering because they lost another senior captain on the last play of the game. This time to a broken leg. As for the onside kick…the ball hit a Jefferson player before it traveled 10 yards.

  23. "Huron leauge stinks this year."

Cool story, go back out of state.. and When you come back, and see more than one game, then come talk. I've been to every Huron game besides Airport and Jefferson…Huron side was slammed when at home, and even when they were away. And when they were away, the opposing teams stands were packed; besides Flat Rock… Remove head, breathe, then comment back.

  24. Milan is building a nice program, if kids want to come from around and be part of it. Great.

What do you think SMCC does? If your knocking Milan for it, knock SMCC also.

  25. So how about that little brawl amongst Huron and Flat Rock players eh? lol Put some excitement into what seemed like the slowest game of my life.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but you've got no seconds on the clock after you hike the ball, and throw… Ball is intercepted in the end zone; and taken for what could've been a TD easily, but is stopped due to refs blowing the whistle… Anyone care to explain what the refs were doing tonight? I understand they wanted to help Flat Rock tonight, but come on.. you can't stop an interception with a whistle blow.

As for Milan, congrats to you! You deserve it, much respect to your team.

GI, sounds like it was one hard fought game. I can only imagine the score if you had all healthy players. Finish your season out strong, and don't give til the last whistle.

    SMCC… overrated.

    KC

  26. Smcc fans were non existent. Maybe 75 people there and they didnt even cheer when they won. Probly knew win wasn't deserved.

10:38, funny, thats exactly what Milan said !!

Whens the last time SMCC scored on 4 pass plays? Never.

    Congrats to Milan!! League champs.

  27. What is up with Riverview's lack of D? You would think a coach with a state title on his resume would emphasize defense a little more.

  28. How did Riverview allow GI to score that many??

GI had a very weak O.

If RV and Milan meet in playoffs again it should be a fun offensive night.

  29. How in the world did SMCC give up so many points the last two games?

We at Milan saw a tough defensive effort from them.

  30. Congrats Big Reds on a 14 game Huron League winning streak and a repeat championship.

Picked to finish 4th this year in the league by the coaches, Milan certainly left nothing in doubt by going 8-0.

    They earned it.

Good luck next week and in the playoffs.

  31. Airport played hard, but Milan got on-track and scored their 29 points, dominating all phases of the game.

But the Big Reds relaxed before the game was over. Airport scored and got an onside kick. Made it more interesting.

Good warm-up for next week's Lincoln showdown.

  32. Congrats to Milan on a 2nd straight league title. Kanitz and Hoover are absolute beasts!! The freshman had some nice runs. I'm interested to see how Milan does in the playoffs. EM

  33. GI view was possibly the best game I've ever watched. Literally was decided by inches on a chain measurement with 50 seconds left!

  34. Milan better get it together on D before the playoffs. The way they played tonight they will lose to Melvindale by at least 3 TDs.

  35. Huron leauge stinks this year. I'm surprised that the number of kids on the teams is so low. Also not many people go to the games like thet use to. Been out of the state for a few years and things have changed so much not in a good way either

    1. So funny that people want to say that. Milan players are from Milan. Not one kid on that team came from ypsilanti or Ann arbor to play ball. But you have to find some excuse to take away from the hard work of those boys. This kids deserve that title!! GO BIG REDS!

  36. Rough game at Jefferson. Refs blew it. Bad call on onside kick. CC was on the ropes, refs bailed them out. Thats a shame, Jefferson controlled line all night.

CC very vulnerable, not sure how they are 6-1. Several penalties both teams. Thats a win with an asterisk. Thats for sure.

  37. CC – Jefferson game, referees were awful. They were a major effect on outcome of game. Refs should never be that way. 42- 34 CC in the 3rd, Jefferson does onside kick and recovers. Ball changes direction bouncing off CC players helmet, refs still give ball to CC. Jefferson in shock, CC calls pass play and scores. Jefferson would have had ball and probably scored.

SMCC wayyyyy overrated. They are not that good, cant see how they are 6-1. Jefferson ruled line all night, CC scored on 3 pass plays too even get on the board.

Too bad about refs, this would have been a great rivalry game.

    1. Anonymous, I doubt you know anything about football. It doesn't matter how you score, but they scored. Get with the times, a touchdown is a touchdown, jefferson played well, but if you can't stop a pass you deserve to lose.

  38. 16 point win is a 16 point win …. They held them just like everyone else to their average of points given up/game….that's all that matters…Milan 8-0 moving on to their next opponent .

  39. Grosse Ile played with real heart. Joe Vollmerhausen outplayed both of Riverview's backs. And GI had some real stellar players on defense-and I'm from the view!
