  1. And also they would have 600 more students to choose from. And with open enrollment and private school that is equal footing. Teams play in the division based on enrollment. So to say if they played in this or that division is irrelevant. So in division 6 if people named the top 3-4 teams consistently they would be mentioned every time.

    JC

  2. Powerhouse lol. One advantage they play up cause of their league but play D5 D6 in playoffs. If they played D3 That word wouldnt be mentioned. And they would have to see teams like Milan which they lost to two years in a row and counting…

  3. Lots of good observations on football around here. SMCC not the greatest academically, very limited facilities, but they must focus strongly on something to keep students coming there.(volleyball, football). Without that they would crumble quickly.
They dont offer scholarships, but 75% or more of the students do not pay full tuition. Lastly, which is a most definite, could that start there in the 9th grade intending to go to college, would do so at any other school also.
Public school has to deal with the poor, realistic side of life, that not everyone will be able to go to college.

As far as good football around here, a few earlier comments hit the nail on the head. There are too many schools in one area around here. Milan is working on it in there area, but too far for MOnroe folk. Everyone out there way is heading to MIlan because of all they have to offer out there. This will continue for many years. What can we do in Monroe to compete with that??
SMCC cant be the school to harness in all the talent because it cost money to go there and they do not have good facilities.
Any suggestions, I would like to see it happen, instead of all of us fighting each other.

  4. If you had all the talent he has every year you'd be a good coach too!! He' has built a nice program, but there is no excuse that they haven't won a D6 championship!! They haven't won the league in a while either!

  5. A couple of thoughts on those programs you listed. Harrison was the king of bringing in kids from outside the district, E. Grand Rapids did the same thing, Rockford is the biggest school in the state. Lowell and Muskegon are legit but the Big Reds get all the best players in Muskegon too.

I'll give you a hint on how Cass does it. They recruit the entire Police Athletic League. They get every kid they want. Their second teamers would finish second in the PSL. They are at every game and practice around the city. They also have the best QB out of the city in a generation in Jayru Campbell.

  6. If they recruit, they need to fire their recruiting director. They haven't had a Division I recruit in all of Giarmo's tenure. Sorry about the loss to DCC, Bedford had a great year.

If you call an open house an "unfair advantage", how fair is it that the Catholic schools with the public/government schools/funds to get students? Seems to me that open houses are a necessity to show the potential students what their school has to offer them, INCLUDING their extracurricular activities.

With school of choice in place now, public schools can no longer argue. It would be anti-American to not condone the choice of which high school you wish to attend. Competition drives success.

Chris, I am waiting on your all decade teams that we were promised (OK, I may be imagining that part)!

  7. And I beg to differ. Financial aid, scholorship, etc. is there a difference?
I know parents that make a very good living and their 2 kids attend SMCC for the sports and they receive financial aid.
The playing field is not equal with the Private or Cathlic schools with the public schools.
Very few attend for the "Education" Actually you get less opportunity at SMCC than many larger schools for class offerings, etc. Low paid teachers, etc. PEOPLE SEND THEIR KIDS THERE TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS, and they market that at their open houses, give aways, free gifts and keys to gift boxes. etc.
If you market that way in the public sector, MHSAA would be all over it and ready to shut you down.
Do you honestly believe the coaches are that much better at DCC, Brother Rice, SMCC, De Lasalle etc.?
Yet they win the majority of their championships and have had numerous outings at Ford Field for state championships. I am not a Bedford fan, but it pisses me off that they have a 1 time chance in 50 yearsto go to the finals with a loaded team of seniors (38) and starters (22) and can not get past DCC, I feel the same wasy about all of them, SMCC, BR, DLS,
People know what goes on and that is does go on. Bedford cannot market or recruit for athletes, SMCC and the rest can and do. Check out the front of their handouts, or their recruiting /marketing video that gets shown to all the cathlic school children in the area.
Heres the key, now pick your prize.

    1. Well if you really want to have the discussion, I'll tell you why things are the war they are for other schools in the area as it pertains to winning titles.

If you look around the state at the powerhouse football programs that are not private schools you'll find a few things in common. For example, schools like FHH, Lowell, Muskegon, Rockford, Canton, Stevensville Lakeshore, EGR and Ithaca are all public schools that have playoff runs pretty much every year. You can add Cass Tech to that list now also. What these schools do is get good coaching staffs in place, have football tech classes at the high schools and lastly welcome with open arms student athletes who only go to those schools to be a part of the football programs.

Monroe county as a whole os for some reason very individual community segregated. What I have always hoped to see would be a time that monroe county would have a football school, which based on geographics alone would probably have to be monroe high. You get the football players in neighboring school districts (monroe, bedford, CC, Jefferson and maybe even Milan) to represent monroe county as a whole, they would be competing for state titles every year.

I know nobody wants to heae that, because for some reason we all hate eachother down here. But that is the way it works throughout the rest of the state, good Catholic and Public programs alike.

  8. Coach Giarmo is the best coach in the league and one of the best coaches in the region. Players learn so much more from him than just football he teaches life lessons.

  9. Unless you have a child that goes to SMCC you have no clue what you are talking about with this scholarship crap. I graduated from there 3 years ago and not one person I know has ever had a "scholarship" there is financial aid for those who need it. That's pretty much it. Maybe here or there they will throw 500 bucks to someone as a freshman for good grades in grade school but there are never any big scholarships, let alone a half ride for a family that makes over 200k

  10. Chris, I partially agree with your last comment. But not the entire comment.
Yes kids that go to cathlic schools like SMCC, usually plan on attending college, and yes they have a very high college attendance rate.
I also know that kids go to SMCC for athletics and the high odds that they will win a championship of some sort. They are not there for the "Cathlic Education" which is the outward foundation for the school and says so in their mission statement.
I also know that kids do get money and gifts to attend SMCC. This is all a part of the incoming open house recruiting, or: marketing that goes on. Heres a key, boys and girls go see what gift that unlocks for you.
I know 2 parents that have kids who are very good athletes and attend SMCC. 1 is a vollyball player, the other a football player. In both cases, the parents make well over $100,000 per year. Neither pays full tuition, actually they pay $3,500.00 per year, which is a little less than half. Their "Key" had partial scholorship grants or gifts in the box they open up when attending the recruiting or marketing open house.
Not that it has anything to do with the Huron League, but look at Bedford. They have a 1 time per decade great football team with 38 seniors, may be their 1 chance in school history to get to the championship game, but now, they have to get through Detroit CC who has been there 16 times. People are just sick of it.

  11. I can agree with stopping all the negative talk about Coach Giarmo. He was probably misquoted in the paper and hopefully they do a retraction not just for Coach Giarmo but for the kid it hurt and the team. I think some of you were so quick to defend Coach Giarmo you forgot about the kid who was probably more hurt then Coach. What a way for him to end his career at SMCC with negative comments. I am true SMCC fan and can defend Coach Giarmo but my heart breaks for the kid. Sure hope that situation was made right

  12. Let's stop with all of the negative Giarmo talk. The guy is the best coach in the league and an all around good guy.

The recruiting stuff is old as well. That has played out. Nobody cares. Nobody gets a full ride for athletic purposes.

Same thing with the better education talk. 100% of SMCC kids are planning on going to college when they enter the 9th grade. That is why 100% pretty much go to college. Those same kids would go to college if they went to public school. It's tiresome.

  13. Coach Giarmo is the coach you want your son to play for. Have you notice how this guy is on the sideline with the sophmores and freshman. When one of the JV kids were hurt who was the first guy out there to make sure they are ok ? Giarmo ! I have never seen another varsity coach do that. And I want to puke for these guys who say their kid was being recruited. What a bunch of crap ! And if he was being recruited and you turned it down it just shows what a idiot you are. Hmm, play for a winning program and receive a better education at the same time. That's a no brainer. If you had a brain. This guy preaches nothing more than the team. There are kids that would shine at different positions and make themselves look better but they are put in a spot that will help the " Team " first. And to clear things up, if your team was so much more athletic than why did you only have one win ? The answer was because they are not athletic like your diluted mind thinks they are. You would be a fool not to want your son to be around coach G. And yes, SMCC is a powerhouse.

  14. Smcc ran for 3,848 yards and 48 tds…that's not a powerhouse offense? And still that's not even including their passing attack! Are you serious?

  15. Does anyone know where I can find a list of the All-League/ Area teams? FR announced on their website that the list was out and named a few players but I couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks

  16. I sure hope monroe evening news does a retraction if it was there fault. There is no reason for the coach, the kid, and the team, and the SMCC community to have to defend themselves after a great season. It's terrible that it went to print that way and they should be the ones apologizing.

  17. Ok, lets get the story straight. I'm a privileged fan that gets to be on the sidelines, help the team, etc. I was near by when the interview after the game took place. The question the reporter asked was "how did you feel when he dropped the pass?" Coach had a quick response and said how about the two catches he made. Then went on to say the team had chances and did not execute well enough to win the game. Which if you had been there is true. Coach Giarmo and his staff give a lot of time and energy to the program, they always express team and have brought speakers in or went to other universities (U of M, Olivet, WMU) to have that expressed to their players. SMCC has success because players have bought into the team concept needed for the offense they run and the defense the run. It does not have heroes, every player has a job for it to be successful. When they execute the win, when they do not it will be a close game or a loss. If you go back and look at all the games this truth is evident. Coaches coach players play, there's a winner and a loser. Been that way since the game began. Support your teams, support your coaches, support your school. If you have the itch to coach instead of complain and arm chair QB-ing, then grab a whistle, write up a resume, and coach. Great season SMCC. Great job to the county school that made the playoffs.

  18. Jack Giarmo does not need to have your approval. He is one of the best coaches that this league has had and there are hundreds of players that have played for him over the llast 15 years that will line up to tell you how well he treated them and how much they enjoyed playing for him. Stars and guys who never saw the field will tell you the same thing. if there is anyone to blame for the article sounding the way it did it's the 20 something sports reporter they sent to cover the game. Nobody is pointing the finger at this kid. Relax

  19. Some of you people criticizing Coach Giarmo because of his quotes in the M.E.N. are ridiculous. Yes I read the article and I don't believe Jack was trying to single out any individual player. Quotes can be misinterpreted since the reporter doesn't exactly publish the interview transcript. Coach Giarmo has built the SMCC program to a powerhouse and pours everything he has into the program and the school for next to nothing. Anyone who wants to question Coach Giarmo's character has obviously never played for him, known him, or had a child play for him. I played for him almost 10 years ago and without him I wouldn't be the man I am today.

    1. Giarmo is the dean of Huron League coaches and deserves respect for sure. But SMCC is not a powerhouse till you win a state title or 2.

  20. Oh no not another "my son was offererd a full four year scholarship to SMCC" . Get over yourself it doesn't happen. Let's hear a name and some proof.

  21. Just keep sending your kids to play for him. You made him untouchable now live with it. Truth is when I was and being begged to bring my son to SMCC to play I could see he just wasn't all he was cracked up to be. Sorry all of you SMCC fans to upset you,

  22. I would just like to say that the Falcons played their game. unfortunately it didn't turn out the way they wanted it to. The paper doesn't do justice for that TEAM, ( like post at 3:04 said it all).a play that had no bearing on the game. I feel sorry for the kid they are blaming. I was there he played tough the whole game. it takes a team to win and lose not just one kid. thanks coach for throwing one of your top players under the bus.

  23. Read the article again, the reporter tooks notes on his performance and then Coach is quoted afterwards. I am sure he was asked about the drop and responded. And after all of the quotes I've read from him over the years including tough losses, I'm sure he didn't mean "dropped the ball" as in let us down.

  24. Don't worry about that article a lot of times the paper misquotes the coaches. But if they didn't sure hope coach apologizes to that kid. I was at that game and that missed catch was not even a factor because they ended up getting a first down after that. They didn't block very well all night long and that's what hurt them not one key play. If your not blocking you can't score or stop the other team from scoring plain and simple. Great season SMCC

  25. I lost respect for Coach Giarmo after reading the paper this morning. There were so many things that went wrong in that game but he focused on a kid that dropped a pass that happened in the first quarter. Way to make that kid feel bad Coach never mind the fact that he caught the other 2 passes that were thrown to him and scored on one and made huge yards on the other. How about you talk about the missed field goal, the missed tackels by the same kids over and over, or about the other kid who missed several passes. Coach Giarmo is supposed to be about TEAM well we all see where you really stand on that. Hope that kid dosnt feel to much like crap after reading that. Keep your head up kid you made big plays every game and your one mistake in the first quarter wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game. There were bigger mistakes made then that and the only person that should be ashamed of themselves is your coach who should be taking the blame not putting it on you.

  26. The coaches worked on this in practice. Safety was supposed to be on the pitch guy. Lb also blew coverage. Just one play. Many plays during the game were not executed well.

  27. Just saw the CC highlights. How do you lose on a 55 yard hook and lateral with no time left??? Where were the DBs? I only saw one CC DB chasing the reciever.

  28. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Great last second win last week, unfortunately, last second loss this week. Good Season.
