January 13, 2014 at 4:19 PM poster, check out michigan-football.com for historical records. They go back to 1950 are are pretty accurate from what I understand.
This looks like a huge concern for Milan. In 2010 enrollment at the high school was over 1000 students. To drop to 750 students would be huge. That is about $1.8 million in state aid that is gone just from HS enrollment.
I know that they do the enrollment in the spring, so 875 was the number from 2013 last year. I believe they started the school year in September around 750.
That might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Arthur Hill??? They are awful. The enrollment this year at Milan will be right around 700, if not lower from what I hear, making them the 4-5th biggest school in the league and in Division 4. So playing Brother Rice or Detroit C.C. (arguably 2 of the best 5 teams in the state) is kind of funny.
Newsflash…. Milan was not that good the past two years. They are just well coached. Besides SMCC and GI, the league is not very good. I think we can all agree on that Riverview and Huron have the most talent hands down and do nothing with it. It's not hard to see.
This year, Milan went 10-1 with 25kids on the varsity and 6 total returning starters from 2012. A pretty big accomlishment for a team expected to do nothing. In division 3, 25 kids is not gonna cut it once you play better teams in the playoffs and the Huron league schedule ends. They better get that number up to 40-45 kids if they want to make a serious run.
They have not lost a league game in two years. Nothing to be assamed of. SMCC and possibly GI if Mitroka is back to normal is the only thing that will stop Milan from running the table again for a 3-Peat.
If Milan wants to be seen as a powerhouse team they should schedule teams like Brother Rice, Cc or Zeeland, East GR or Arhthur Hill. that will be a true test for them with similar sized schools.
A earlier poster said that there where up to 20 different school in the huron league at different times. Can someone please tell me what schools? I am very into the history of the league and schools. It is my hope that FR stays in the league and battles through it. If the Coach can get some more help that cares the way he does, they can build this program into one that can compete yearly and maybe make title runs every few years. A lot has to happen first. KEEP ON FIGHTING FR! NOW IS THE TIME TO REALLY SHOW WHAT RAM PRIDE MEANS!
I would like to see View and Huron step up in competition a bit… GI as well. Kudos to Airport and Jefferson for playing tough competition, maybe a bit too tough in Jefferson's case. The rest are where they should be IMO.
Who is Milan playing next season? Most schools have that it place by now. Are they playing Ypsilanti and Lincoln as usual? I don't see why they wouldn't.
I've read some ignorant comments on here, but this one takes the cake. Who would know anything about scheduling opponents other than the AD or Head Coach? Nothing will surprise me on this site after reading that
Who did Milan dodge? Most out of conference football series are a 2 year, home and home thing. Don't just throw your opinion out there without the facts to back it up.
Who is Milan dodging? Where are you getting your information from? Contracts for athletic events are generally a home and home deals, especially in football. Don't just throw your opinions out there if you are not going to back it up!
Milan is dodging certain non-conference opponents because they only want to schedule teams they know they can beat. They know they'll won't be as strong in 2014 so they are trying so soften the schedule.
Chris- I agree. They had 28 or so on 7th grade this yr and 23 or 24 on 8th grade. Hopefully they keep 40 of those and add some new ones as well.
The junior high program needs work though and they need tongetbthe kids to play their not for yellow jackets! They also need to schedule better for junior high, why did they play Belleville???
Twenty kids per class is too much for JV football? FR doesn't have a freshman team. You will get some attrition when you move to varsity. That number would then become thirty or fifteenish per class.
You guys must be from other schools that count on a win by playing flat rock!
They will get better and they need about 3 or 4 new coaches throughout the system. It will be hard to get kids out when they do not compete against these teams. Having them retool and rebuild for a few years is better for everyone.
12:26 —- should the league ask Milan to go since they left for 30 years and came back?
This league has been around sine the 50's and best I can tell about 20 different teams have been in it. Over time teams come and go for various reasons, it happens all over the state and in every league….. Why is this such a big deal for 4 or 5 yrs in one sport?
Here is what I am sure to be an unpopular opinion among some FR parents. Stay in the Huron League and get better!
Don't talk bad about the program, losing, getting hurt or not playing. Encourage your kid to play football. If they ask your opinion on whether to play. Tell them to go out and play. Tell them they will regret not going out later in life (Hint* they will regret it)
If you plan on moving to another city or taking your kid to another school, then go right ahead and do that. That is your right as a parent. Make your move and get FR athletics out of your mouth.
FR needs 35-40 kids playing JV football. Every kid that is a decent athlete should play football unless they are a soccer player or runner of some sort. Twenty kids per class at the JV level shouldn't be that tough to do.
Last, there probably needs to be a coaching change at the JV level. Get a person that teaches the kids two specific things; blocking and tackling. Get a guy who the kids like and respect.
Haven't heard anything about FR leaving the HL. I am close to someone in the district front office. It's not a bad idea for football only. I think they have competitive programs in all other sports.
But keep in mind this is only the 2nd year for this new coach. And, they had a lot of losses from their 2013 graduating class. This team is VERY young. Not to mention it took longer than 2 years for this program to get here and it'll take longer to get them turned around. This is like turning the Queen Mary, not a jet ski.
Be patient, this coach seems to really care about the program and the kids and that is a very good place to start. If he can get just a couple talented kids to buy into the program who will influence their peers then you'll see them climbing up the standings.
FR isn't going anywhere. They aren't going to leave the league. The travel is perfect for them. They sit right in the middle of the league geographically. Just look for them to try and go independent in football. Other schools will complain about it but it really isn't a big deal. Each team would have to find a game that open week. Teams are always looking. FR would most likely play Huron and Airport anyway. They wold probably play GI too.
SMCC could play Adrian or Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes in week 2. Jefferson vs. Redford Union in week 2. Riverview could play MH Madison in week 6. Milan could play Garden City or Romulus in week 7. Done! Sign the contracts and let FR go independent for 4 years.
The league could vote FR out. It would take 6 schools to get rid of them. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen. I see FR staying put anyway. They will get better. The kids just need to come out for the team.
Riverview is 49-47 in the last 10 years and that includes 11-1 in 2004. They really should schedule anyone they like. Crest wood is 39-52 during the same time period. Summit is 34-57. Not really a big deal scheduling those teams.

Chris, any insight on FR? Heard the school board and school officials were going to meet but have not a peep yet. I think they are best suited to get out of Huron League for 5 years to help them build a program. Then they can choose to get back in or not at that point.
Milan does great in league play because they are in a weaker league than they should be……. Like Florida State beating teams by 70 points in the nineties and fizzling out. They should spend the year playing teams from Div. 3 and then they will not be such a standout.
Great coaches still need good players in order to be successful. Hoskins wasnt a "good coach" until he got some players there and you can surely say the same thing about Bodner. Were they bad coaches who are now all of a sudden good? doubt it. I will tell you that having QB's like White, Mitroka and Kanitz make all the difference in the world. Like a great point guard in HS hoops, they are irreplaceable.
It would neat to see what Huron's record would be if Hoskins was the coach or say maybe Giarmo. Would it make a difference. Would the 5 wins of last year somehow be 7 or 8?
No doubt coaches are valuable but it is hard to gauge just how valuable. Players win, coaches lose. never a truer statement.
No one is banging their chest… Also, as for losing in districts, they simply lost to better teams. A team with maybe 4 or 5 D-II talents versus a team loaded with D-I and D-II kids, the latter will win quite often.
You're right. It has nothing to do with recruiting. Same as SMCC. Kids want to play for a winner and Milan has won 18 straight regular season games. Can you blame kids for wanted to transfer in.
Who said anything about recruiting.. I said I have heard the transfer rumors. Someone posted it on here and I have hard it elsewhere. No big deal, it is what it is.
Looks about right chris, I think the top three could be shuffled depending on how they do against one another. But I think it's a 3 team race with maybe Huron or Riverview winning some bigger games.
I speak the truth I guess.
How did you get the unbiased nod Chris?
-bn
Let's talk some players Chris. Who have you seen and how talented are they? Your opinion is unbiased.
Here are the teams that I have being in the Huron League at one time or another.
Obviously the current eight teams plus:
Dundee
Ypsilanti Roosevelt
Saline
Chelsea
Ann Arbor University
Ypsi Lincoln
Tecumseh
Blissfield
Carlson

Time for a new topic Chris

I know when they do the enrollments. Enrollment was turned in and February 2013 and will be done so agian this year
I know that they do the enrollment in the spring, so 875 was the number from 2013 last year. I believe they started the school year in September around 750.
Milan's MHSAA enrollement for this year was 875. Are you saying their going to drop 175 students in one year?
That might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Arthur Hill??? They are awful. 35-40 kids playing JV? FR isn't Brother Rice. stop

Flat Rock will be alright. As bad as they are right now, Huron was worse in the '90s and early 2000s.
Here is what I am sure to be an unpopular opinion among some FR parents. Stay in the Huron League and get better!

What would Crestwoods or Summits record be if they played in the HL?
Riverview is 49-47 in the last 10 years and that includes 11-1 in 2004. They really should schedule anyone they like. Crest wood is 39-52 during the same time period. Summit is 34-57. Not really a big deal scheduling those teams.

But the Crestwood and Summit programs are not strong, big difference. numbers do not ALWAYS mean successful program!
Crestwood has 300 more students than Riverview and Summit's enrollment continues to climb toward 800.

Thoughts?
Riverview should be ashamed scheduling Creswtood and Summit. 1000 students and a proud football tradition and they give the fans that. step it up
Milan does great in league play because they are in a weaker league than they should be……. Like Florida State beating teams by 70 points in the nineties and fizzling out. They should spend the year playing teams from Div. 3 and then they will not be such a standout.
I'm calling a Milan three peat.
Riverview is going to make another run next year. They'll surprise everyone
I think you can get better and I think you can get worse. It's a wash.

Don't coaches get better as they learn? Both those coaches struggled early and have grown with their teams.
A little about Hoskins being an excellent coach.

Yes 11:01, I think that is what everyone is saying. Milan lost to better teams.
Solid picks Chris. Although i think Airport will suprise you. My top 5 would be SMCC GI Airport Huron Milan. EM
any more talk of FR going independent
No one is banging their chest…
Also, as for losing in districts, they simply lost to better teams. A team with maybe 4 or 5 D-II talents versus a team loaded with D-I and D-II kids, the latter will win quite often.
I think it is rather safe to say that Milan, whether its good coaching or transfers coming in or both, will be challenging for the top spot.
-bn
lincoln AND Ypsi had nice years….
Yeah regular season games! Yet they never win in the playoffs. Come on do some post season winning before you bang your chest.
Chris, who are your "on the radar" players for next season? Like for DPOY and OPOY and all league…
You're right. It has nothing to do with recruiting. Same as SMCC. Kids want to play for a winner and Milan has won 18 straight regular season games. Can you blame kids for wanted to transfer in.
I figured kids wanna go somewhere were teams make a run to Ford Field. Not lose in the districts every year.
Who said anything about recruiting.. I said I have heard the transfer rumors. Someone posted it on here and I have hard it elsewhere. No big deal, it is what it is.
I heard rumors about Milan recruiting in Georgia. There's a couple 250 lbs+ lineman that could come play at Milan next year
I'm not sold on Milan, but Hoskins is an excellent coach and the transfer rumors are alive and well.
Looks about right chris, I think the top three could be shuffled depending on how they do against one another. But I think it's a 3 team race with maybe Huron or Riverview winning some bigger games.
