Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Is SMCC’s defense as good as the 1991 defense that propelled the Falcons to a state title?

That was the best 2nd half Huron has played all season.

Grosse Ile is playing angry

Milan needed that.

I knew what the outcome would be, but I thought Riverview would score.

What sayeth the Airport faithful ?

Don’t worry Bear fans, UPSM is coming soon.

Rams played better for a half this week.

Is Andrew Mitroka back?

Looks like four Huron League teams will get into the playoffs.

Who is SMCC’s most valuable player?

Huron League Coach of the Year?

I think the league is pretty good this year.

In case you were wondering Carter Paddy had thirteen tackles Friday.

News flash people, the best three defenses in the league belong to the top three teams.

I think the Rams may have to wait until 2015 to get a win.

  1. there are two problems with the post about FR. 1. TO is leaving to be an AD. That is a promotion. That is a better job. High school coaching is not a full time job. 2. In this day and age there are limited resources at schools, you cannot fire someone from a job without cause. This is not college football or pros where people should be fired and hired for wins and loss. There is already an AD at FR, if there had been an opening maybe they would have hired him but no opening.

High school football is about teaching young men teamwork, hard work, and perseverance. I wish Coach O well and good luck at the new job at Dundee.

  2. Flat rock lost a great asset, guy put in time cared about the kids and was dedicated to the program. The school board should be ashamed for not making him the A.D. local kid graduate standout athlete and good guy they get away. This will cause a downward spiral for the program as good athletes will leave an up-and-coming will go elsewhere.

  3. SMCC is just as good as 1991, maybe better.

Huron is the real deal. four teams is great.

Bears, don't play dirty just because you are frustrated, you are a good team. Just keep working together. Paddy never quit, good job

GI is not angry, just motivated.

Mitroka is back, fully back, watch out.

The Huron league is good this year, level of play up across the board. Better coaching is key.
Coach of the year: Giarmo. Those boys all know exactly what to do each and every play. Kalbfleisch comes next for bringing Huron to next level of play.

News Flash: who comes in third?

  4. A 9 win Class C team is the same as a 4 win Class A team as far as Playoff points earned if you beat them. So there is value for the higher class schools to play the good lower class schools and vice versa

  5. Not even FR wants to talk about FR…. They need to go independent, get a hanful of good assistants to run JV and lower levels.

    1. Here is some FR talk. My son is on the team, and it has been a difficult year. Between the losing, the untimely passing of their defensive coordinator, and T.O. taking a position at Dundee (can't blame him… Very good opportunity), these players have been through quite a bit this year. Through it all, they work hard, and are improving. They are young, and will need a new coach that continues to push them, not to mention greater belief in themselves and commitment to the weight room. Nonetheless, there is talent on the roster, and in time their hard work will show up in wins. Keep your chins up… I, and many in the community are proud of you!

  6. The same Jefferson fans predict a Jefferson upset every week. Are you kidding me? Are you insane? Jefferson has 0 chance, I mean 0.0% change of beating SMCC. Get over it. Try to improve, try to keep this game within 50 points, and stop predicting an upset!

  7. Monroe People please get off the Huron league blog. Nobody cares what you think about CC or the Huron league. Better yet start you own blog..

  8. Jefferson is well coached and the kids practice everyday like everyone else. Sure they want to win thats why you play the game. The Jefferson CC game is always big no matter what the team records are. This year Jefferson does not have Sandore, he single handly kept the bears in the game last year. Against Airport, Milan, Riverview, Huron and Grosse Ile, the Bears gave up 189 points. Against the same teams CC gave up just 14 points total with three shut outs. CC is at home and has way to may skilled players with speed and we all know speed kills.

I would think most people in the league are NOT excited for SMCC. I could go on and on about why. We all have reasons. We all probably know a few good kids and a few good familys from there, but overall, being an all star program that attracts the best athletes from our area and is located in the center of our county, basically taking kids from the rest of us, why should anybody root for them. That is not as big of an accomplishment as taking the kids from your own area, your own street, even your neighbors and being successful.

By the way CC would never beat Monroe. GET OVER IT!!!!

So basically, what you are saying is that SMCC should not be allowed to have a sports program at all? Or are you saying that you don't think very highly of your own sports programs? Should we just sit back and root for the high school that is in our own back yard and not offer sports programs to our kids?
We don't ask you to pay tuition for our kids. We don't put you down because you may not be Catholic. We are lucky enough to have a pretty good Catholic high school in Monroe County and we chose to send our children there, that's all. Do we happen to have pretty good sports teams once in a while? Yes, but so does just about everyone else in the county. I have plenty of friends who send their kids to different schools all over the county, and I'm very happy for them when their child or their school does well. It makes me proud to think that our kids, down here in Monroe County, could play with any of the teams that get all the media attention statewide.
My son played with half of the kids on Jefferson's team. They are all Great Kids! They came from the CYO program.
The SMCC Freshman football team beat Monroe @Monroe 21-7 two years ago. Not sure if too much has changed, though.
I'm not asking you to root for SMCC. We have plenty of fans at our games, but if you want to stop by, we'll make room for you.

  10. If the snooze2you bracket held up i believe Huron would play Riverview in the 2nd round and the winner would play Allen Park in the regionals. EM

  11. I am still skeptical of our league. I hope they are all world beaters, but I am not so sure. Looking at the Adrians and Tecumsehs as some of our out of league opponents, neither have turned out to be very good. I still think it remains to be seen as to how good we really are.

Huron has the best team they have had in the history of their program. That is the coach of the year.

Redmond is a good coach. Giarmo has only beat him a few times.
CC is class C. Waste of Trojans time. Enough already.

Sour grapes? don't think so. Many kids go there, that prior family did not. If you only had Alumni's kids going there, you wouldn't be good at anything.
    Another story for another day.

Talked with my kids at dinner last night, both of them know CC's offense, they even know the gaps and holes they will take.
Don't quite understand the myth in stopping them. Hardest part is the chess game of loading box or having several d backs. If you know whats coming, STOP IT!

They only have 5 plays, teach them to the team and call them out when they come to the line.

Come on Bears!! Read this, identify there play and make the change on the line. Not rocket science.

    GO BEARS!!

    JB

    1. You mad bro?
First of all CC lines up basically the same way for every play, so calling out the play before hand just won't work. If your kids did know the play and yelled it from the sideline while it was going on, well you'd be to late. It's great that your kids know how to line up, I'm pretty sure most Huron league kids know that and till couldn't get the upper hand. When are people going to realize that this offense isn't simple and isn't easy to stop. Pretty sure these coach's have tried everything they can. Now as for CC sucking at everything if alumni kids were the only ones there, you're flat wrong. My junior year there were 7 state placers, in wrestling, who's fathers attended CC but they decided to go to other schools. If they were to have gone to CC we would've had 8 state placers , including myself, and a really good shot at a state championship. Pretty sure you're just mad bro.

  12. SMCC real MVPs are Vuich, Howey, Lako, Bino, and Windham solely for his INT'S. Its all about the TEAM though at CC. SMCC would beat Monroe this year like they would in most recent years and Giarmo would beat down Redmond per usual but Trojan RB's Blount and Dickerson would put up a fight. CC's first test will be its last regular season game, Lansing CC.

  13. Riverview D-lineman dove at the CC offensive lines knees the whole game. How did that ploy work out? Seems a bush league move to me. Especially when you have the bigger players by far.

  14. I would say Allen Park is the favorite at the moment in Region 4. You are right however, Huron and Riverview do have a shot. Romulus is no slouch neither is Tecumseh.

  15. Jefferson will be ready for CC… they almost always are. CC isn't looking past them at all. This is for the outright league title. TONS on the line.

  16. With the maps out the way they are, Huron or Riverview could make a semifinal game. That would be awesome!

Quit with the sour grapes over CC for "stealing our kids". The same families have been going there for generations. You haven't gotten those kids back in the day and won't get them in the future.

How do you not give it to Giarmo? He switched up his defense to make playing spread teams a strength, rather than a weakness as in the past.

  19. I'm happy for SMCC. Actual I'm glad all the teams in the league are decent football teams. I like a challenge and so far this year every game but 2 has been a challenge for us. What I will say is that over the last 2 years not many gave Milan a chance in the playoffs. We were bashed a lot. Even from fans in the league. I will stand my ground when it comes to Milan, but at the same time I will defend the teams I the league. I would much rather say I lost to these teams then out of league teams. Most like your playoff hopes are done, making a season above .500 is still a good year considering what was up against us. I wish the best to the top 4 that are playoff bound for sure and I hope one or 2 can make it all the way. Good luck.

  20. If SMCC played Monroe High. SMCC 47 Monroe 15. It would be a blowout.. More athletes, better coaching, more will to win at cc over monroe.. look at the last time Monroe had over 7 or 8 wins.. they are a mediocre program at best. Yes cc is Div 5/6 but that wouldnt even matter. I remember the days when CC would play Bedford year in and year out and those games would be ugly.. 52-0 kind of ugly, with Bedford being an average 5-4 Team.

  21. SMCC might want to keep a close eye on Lansing Catholic Central. Wouldn't worry about Ithaca's and Lumen Christi's in the playoffs.
If CC ends up D5, LCC is 7-0 and have crushed the 2011 and 2012 state champ programs so far this year. They are very good.

  22. Does anyone recall last years game? Its was a 2 TD game. Jefferson was within 1 TD did an onside kick and recovered, but one of the refs overturned the call. CC went down and scored. Difference in game right there.

CC's coaches even called Jefferson coaches, told them great game and yes it was a bad call. Team records were nearly the same too.

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE ON A BEAR, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT ONE WILL DO.

  23. Monroe is not awful this year, as a matter of fact they just beat Ann Arbor Pioneer. U guys couldn't hold Pioneers jock, let alone beat them. Monroe 5-2 this year against some very good programs.

  24. If you still have to play Jefferson what Paddy is doing and how many tackles he has should wake you up in the middle of the night.

  25. I would think most people in the league are NOT excited for SMCC. I could go on and on about why. We all have reasons. 26. I agree what is wrong with pumping your chest a little. Especially the last 3 games everyone said that C.C has meet its match and they have rolled over all the teams. Just give them credit gees they are having a Awesome year. Ya I'm jealous but not going to rip them because of it.

  27. I would say most people in the league are excited FOR the CC team. It's always nice to see one of ours possibly contend for a trip to Ford Field. Frankly – the criticism you heard is made because of what is probably a fan or 2 saying over-the-top obnoxious things that either make your program sound elitist or are just plain mean and insulting to others.

    LOL beat down!!!

  29. CC class of 2016 actually beat Monroe High as Freshman 21-7. Class of 2015 lost 31-21.

This was supposed to be the year for Monroe. They might get into the playoffs and if so they will be 1 and done.

Calpreps picks at an 80% clip nation wide. Monroe would lose to CC most years. Take a look for yourself.

  30. You will not beat Monroe guys. Sorry. You had a hard time with Redmond at Airport, you won't beat him at Monroe.

Besides, Its does Monroe absolutely no good to play a Class C team. SMCC has everything to gain from this, Monroe nothing. Waste of time.

    1. Monroe is awful like every year. For all the talent they have at that school, every year their football program under achieves. They should be more concerned about not beating anyone any good again this year instead of peeping the HL blog.

Wow. CC get over yourself please. Your having a good year, great. Tired of hearing about it already.

Your a good team in Monroe County, lets see what happens in the playoffs. Lots of talk about Ithaca already, come on??

    October 13, 2014 at 8:13 AM

Why aren't we supposed to get excited about our team? If your team, whomever it may be, was having as good a year as SMCC, wouldn't you be excited? I don't understand why the SMCC fans aren't allowed to cheer too loudly. I've seen Ithaca. I'm not ready to say that we'd beat them, but so far, so good. And that's exciting nonetheless. GO FALCONS!!

  32. 8:13

You obviously do not follow football closely. The only talk about Ithaca is that they are not the same as the past four years. Lots of people worried about their win streak. Not to mention the last map I saw did have us bumping to D-5, but that changes daily. If there isn't a bump in division, there will be way more worry about Jackson Lumen Christi and the MSU commit of a running back they have.

    haha bring it!

  35. Categorizing the most valuable would be easier. Running back would be Lako, LB David Howey, offense/defense line Kyle Bausman, DB Windham/Vuich. Without these four seniors they would fall apart. Speaking of it, is Kyle Bausman sitting this week out after his injury Friday night? And does anyone know if his injury is serious or what it is?

  36. Kalby for coach of the year. He uses the key players he has and makes it works. He's come out on top at against all odds; he's shown other teams that Huron can and will contend. And he is the reason for Hurons program turning around. I give props to CCs coach but, it's been a given even before he took over the team he has now; that they were a state championship team. Huron has never really been able to predict a freshman team ever as coming to the varsity level and being a top notch team (looking at JV and freshman this past year, they have solid players coming up the next few years). Just my .02 tho and I maybe a bit bias lol

    KC

  37. Smcc does not have just one most valuable. There a few guys they have to have to win. Bryce Windham, John Lako, David Howey, Kyle Bausman, Justin Carrabino, and Mitchell Lamour

    1. Lower levels r still learning it is going taking baby steps at first then as we grow you will see more progress..varsity team has shown growth fromm last year

  38. To get in at 5-4 you must have a good resume. So if your 5 wins came against crap teams, then u have no shot. In both cases, MILAN and AIRPORT have zero shot. Neither have beaten a quality team. Wins against DCD or Tecumseh won't be enough.

  39. Bear nation knows these times won't last for ever the players of today r setting this program up for success in the future.
