Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to SMCC for winning the Huron League title. (I made the pick back in August)

Congrats to Huron for breaking the school record in wins. (I didn’t make that pick)

Grosse Ile gets a big win over Riverview and finishes third. (I did pick GI 3rd in August)

Milan still has a shot at the post season. (My Milan season picks never turn out)

Apparently Jefferson Bear Justin Kull broke the school record for passing yards. Congrats! (I would have thought he broke that back in week three or four)

Turnovers hurt the Rams again.

With that loss, Riverview might not like the first round playoff match up that they get.

I’m really surprised that Airport gave up 45 points on Friday.

Who is the best RB in the league? Lot’s of good underclassmen!

Some teams don’t block and tackle very well. Do they still teach that?

I would like to see a Grosse Ile/Robichaud match up in week one of the playoffs.

I would love the Texas football District and playoff format to come to Michigan.

I am contemplating heading up to Lansing on Friday to catch the SMCC/LCC game. Think they would let me ride the SMCC bus?

Do think Riverview should play Stockbridge and Flat Rock play Summit instead on Friday?

I don’t think I have said this, Dan Kalbfleisch has done an excellent job turning around the Huron program.

If I give the Grosse Ile offensive line some credit, will my heckler go away? 😉

If you had to pick one player in the league to start a team, who would it be?

Another playoff match up I would like to see is SMCC defending Michigan Collegiate’s spread.

I think the bantering on here has gotten out of hand. Thank you to the thoughtful posters and to those of you who aren’t, go away!

I hope my Alma Mater does a big time search for a football coach and offers a teaching job with it. I hear Eric Taylor is available these days.

I am ready for the playoffs, too many bad week nine match ups in the league.

Congrats to my boy OC on his new Athletic Director position. Flat Rock’s loss is Dundee’s gain!

  1. One of the main reasons kids attend SMCC is athletics. Their volleyball program is unmatched and boys basketball/football have been good in recent times. The religious part of it is great, but many of us know that we can get a just as valuable religious experience at our local church by attending regularly and volunteering.

The academic part is probably lacking a bit if anything. Most of the kids do graduate, but for what they pay, they are no further ahead than public school. Currently, Monroe, Airport and Jefferson offer more AP classes than SMCC.

The Middle college is also gaining a lot of steam around here for education purposes, unfortunately, there is no real high school experience there.

At this point, the main reason to attend SMCC remains Tradition and Athletics.

  2. Parents send their kids to SMCC because it's a faith based education. 100% of the students graduate and 95% go on to college. They are allowed to experience prayer and go to church during school hours. Religion classes are taught in all four years. They have service hour requirements and wear uniforms to school. Athletics are a small part of the SMCC experience. Tradition brings some public school students to them but the majority of the kids come from St Marys Middle School and a few from St Charles, St Patrick's , and St Joseph's school in Erie. They have lost some great athletes to public schools but people just step up and produce, just the kind of people you will be glad to hire some day.

  3. There are kids in every school that if they played football other than the only sport they play, the football team for those schools would be so so much better. Take Milan, I know of 10 kids, that if they played football Milan would be better. Not saying we could have run the table but would be more competitive. I'm sure Jefferson and AP is the same way. 10 kids could be a major factor when your dressing 25.
Now with that being said, I hope Flat Rock can hire a good coach. I'm just not sure they will find someone who can turn it around. The good thing about taking that job is the person who takes it can't do any worse than the last. Not trying to kick anyone with that statement but they have not won a game in how long? Winning cures everything. Go 3-6 next year and see how much better they will be and how many more kids play. It will take a good salary in my opinion to put a good coach there. Not to mention a good D and O coordinator. Just my opinion. Hope they get a win Friday.

  4. @4:23pm. I agree with your comments. I just cannot figure out why SMCC keeps getting all kinds of guff about stealing kids from the public schools. There are all kinds of talented kids from all over this area. I, personally think that the coaching and the tradition is what keeps the SMCC kids winning. This year's SMCC Varsity football team lost a few key players to Monroe High, and it seems like they didn't lose a step.

  5. 2:49. without getting into a major detailed, often repeated discussion. Bottom line is the more devoted kids attend SMCC, that's why their parents pay for them to go there. Obviously in life, you value something much more if you pay for it, than if you received it for free. I am one of the few who have attended SMCC and public high school.

All schools have devoted kids, SMCC just has more of them.

    Have a good day.

  6. How, exactly, does SMCC get the "cream of the crop" every year? Please, someone with some sense, explain this to me! Are you saying that the Catholic kids are all All-Stars? I sure wouldn't.

  7. I said I played on some winning teams. We won in football, basketball and track when I was there. I was there the same time as Chris for the most part. Does winning team mean league championship? No. Was I on a league championship team? Yes. District Championship? Yes. Did we compete well against league teams? Yes. One year I played football we gave up 82 points in 9 games as the smallest team in the league. Do you want to know something funny? As a kid I never knew the size of the schools we were playing. We just played and competed!

You know there is a real easy way to get out of the league. Move your kid to another school."

So you think Flat Rock Should play Monroe because it doesn't matter how many kids are in a school? Have you watched any FR games lately to see how "overmatched they are" ? It's at all levels too. My son is in JH and they have over 40 kids out, but we still only have 110 boys to pick from. If all the good 3 sport athletes played football at FR they would be better, but they know it's not worth it. Remember sir 1983 was a much different time. You were a few years removed from winning a state title. What has been done since is damaging. You have the answers maybe you should put in for the job!! Or maybe we can meet the football game Friday.

    1. I think you may have misunderstood his idea. As a player he didn't know, that didn't stop the schools from aligning themselves with similar schools. Just like they do now.

I would have to disagree with the MS teams being overmatched. From what I've seen is the differences come down to coaching. They have 2 coaches for each team. Two. The 7th grade coaches don't have the time to teach fundamentals which is hurting the team. You can't just tell a kid to block or tackle, not teach them how, and then yell at them for not doing it right. (Not to mention that pistol formation is killing me- too many bad memories of Pruchniki's 3-play double wing) The 8th grade coaches are solid coaches. Old school. They work the kids hard and because of that a lot of kids end up quitting. I'm ok with that.

But the one thing I couldn't say is that either team's kids are overmatched every game.

The 9th and 10th grades should be good, it doesn't help that 4 or 6 of them were pulled up to varsity.

The junior class is good. The senior are the last class from the Pruchniki era. He decimated the entire program over one class. It's going to take a few more years but Tom had things going in the right direction.

Just my 2 cents. I'll be there tomorrow to cheer on the 7th grade before heading to the job.

  8. All this talk and nobody really wants to credit the Huron football team?! Please, our QB, kicker and especially our defense is one of the best in the league. Maybe Huron fans are just humble and don't like to brag or argue.

  9. Jefferson kids to get motivated, they looked very unenthusiastic vs CC there biggest rival along with Airport. They looked beat before the game even started no energy. That starts with the coaches. just watching pre-game warm ups CC just looked more poised and professional, Jefferson needs to stop with the good ole' boys and hire some real coaches. Giarmo is one of the best ever in the area, should use CC program as example for how to improve.

  10. Isn't great relative? I will give you an example. Guys who run 4.6 in high school are fast, but would be considered slow at the next levels. Same thing with a lineman who runs 5.1. That guy can really run says a commentator, but if he were a RB, he would be considered a turtle.

Those kids I listed were great Huron League high school athletes.

    1. I think think at some point you have to add things into the equation like: winning, how much you mean to your teams success, and what sports you play. Rob White for example, great football player. He did not start for an average basketball team as a senior, and a great golfer. I for one am someone who appreciates the game of golf, however it's golf. With the one sport specialization of kids today it is not very often you get a kid who is a legitimate great 3 sport athlete.

  11. The word "great" is over used. I would consider those guys very good, but "great" demands more then just statistics. How do you handle yourself when lights are the brightest? Champion intangibles are what
    seperate very good from "great."

  12. Those comments about Windham and Robinson are awful fishy… I smell something cooking.

I wont make any accusations but Im rather sure they weren't made by a CC guy. The Robinson comment may have been made by a "huron" guy but I think I know who it is.

Move your kid to another school.

  14. Windham is a great great athlete. Best in a decade is a stretch. McCormick from Airport was outstanding last year. Rob White from Grosse Ile was a three sport stud 3 years ago Zack Richardson from Huron 5 years ago was all league and all monroe county in 4 sports. Those are just off the top of my head. Plenty off great athletes in this league.

  15. Eric Painter does a good job of organizing that athletic department. He does what is asked of him. He is asked to schedule games, officials and transportation from what I know. He is very efficient at doing so. My school plays them in multiple sports and he is better than 99% of those I deal with.

Now do they need five people doing all those jobs in the Athletic Department? I guess it is up to them. Whatever they think the best way to do things is up to them.

    1. If that's all Painter is asked to do then, yes, he does his job. The blame then falls on his bosses. Keep in mind, though, he is an empty desk during bowling season. The one thing I don't see from any of the administration is passion and the drive to turn things around. That, my friend, is a problem.

  16. SMCC has been good for 70 years now. Top 20 team in the state winning % wise. I think the coaches they have had their have more affect on that then anything else.

If Giarmo coached any team in the league they would be 2 games better.

  17. Which FR AD does a good job? They have 4 of them lol. The AP does a good job.
I guess it comes down to do you want to be a bowling school or football school. painter does a great job, but he's retired. Move on with your life and take over the asst job and coach bowling if you want to be involved. Give oestrike his job and he would have stayed. But they aren't serious about football there. FR IS A BOWLING SCHOOL LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  18. In response to this.."Flat Rock should not get out of the league and you are wrong on the enrollments back then. Carlson was over 1000. Huron, Grosse Ile and CC were over 700 (CC was adjusted because of being all boys). Riverview, Jefferson and Airport were all over 800. Flat Rock was under 500 students.

I don't think any sophomores will leave and if a parent wants to take their middle schooler somewhere because of football then go right ahead.

I think the 3rd option I listed last night is the best one. Hire an established coach who can teach in the building."

Not sure when you went to High School, but I'm guessing around the early 90's or late 80's. Makes since because you dont' see the change.

SMCC doesn't count because they get cream of the crop kids every year. A school of 200 boys shouldn't consistently contend for the league crown every year. Think about it unless it's a private school.

Carlson got out of the league because they were that big. They weren't very good with 1200 kids shame on them.

So look at your point. When in the last time FR won a BOYS..league championship in any sport other than bowling which doesn't count? WHen they were 7-2 and made the playoffs they didn't. It's 1993 in basketball. There is a reason they need out.

    http://michigan-football.com/f/flatrock.htm

Show me this SUCCESS FR has had in football? Please humble me. Then yes you're correct about other schools enrollment. Football is a numbers game you need kids to pick from. Riverview having 400 boys is not fair when FR has 225 boys to pick from.

  19. If Ian Robinson at Huron isn't injured early in the season he is the best back in the league. The kid has a rare combination of speed and strength, with field vision and the ability to read blocks like I've never seen in high school. Scary to think how much better the Huron offense would be with him healthy.

  20. Here is the readers digest version of Texas football playoffs.

Every school is put into a district or league based on schools size and location. That district is usually 6 to 9 teams. They play a 10 game schedule. The only games that count towards playoffs are against your district or league opponents. The other games can be against anyone. Win lose or draw, they have no bearing on the playoffs. That is why the top teams in Texas play each other every year. In San Antonio, on the first weekend of the season you will see #1 play #2, #3 play #4 and so on. They play right at the Alamo Dome.

As for playoffs, the top 3 or 4 teams in each district make the playoffs based on their district record. They are then split into 12 divisions based on enrollment. The divisions are 6A big school, 6A small school, 5A big School, 5A small school and so on.

It makes for some great football. Here is a link to Texas football showing the 6A schools and their districts. It is a different world:
    http://texashsfootball.com/2014-texas-hs-football-schedules/2014-class-6a-schedules/

They would never do this in Michigan because of the historic make up of leagues. However, they could take the top 3 teams from the Huron League or top 4 teams from the Downriver league based on league games only. This would allow schools to play non-league games against anyone and eliminate games like Riverview/Summit. or bring about games like SMCC/Monroe High. You would then take all playoff qualifiers and split them evenly into 8 divisions based on enrollment.

  21. I didn't say Jefferson went without problems. Defense is an issue. Lots of pressure over there, we all felt we had the talent to be right there with SMCC, GI and Huron. Obviously, that didn't happen.

    Stay Tuned.

    JB

  22. What could have Flat Rock do in order to keep Oestrike? They are not giving him the AD job. The guy there does a good job.

  23. Blocking is Blocking. Teams are going to change it up like that.

If the opponent thinks SMCC is running they load the box. Happens all the time. CC has additional weapon with #4, he zips out of the backfield uncovered and sprints down the field, safety valve so to say. If line collapses #7 launches it far as he can.

Jefferson had no answer for this. I'm sure LCC and playoff teams will. Just watch the film. Also watch #12 lining up on end. Most teams in HL had no answer for these guys. The line will have a very tough time if #4 and #12 are controlled. Have to try and hold those blocks without getting caught holding.

    Congrats for winning league.
But competition will get much tougher now. Its much easier to devise a game plan against teams you play year in and year out.
    New season now.

    JB

    1. Bryce Windham is the best 3 sport athlete this league has seen in more than a decade. Make all the back handed comments you want. The BEST QB in the league doesn't just close his eyes and throw as far as he can. And yes I said "The BEST" and it's not even close.

  24. I was at that GI-Riverview game. Don't have a kid playing and GI should have won that game by 30 points. Sorry View, you did get pushed around.

  25. Flat Rock should not get out of the league and you are wrong on the enrollments back then.

Hire an established coach who can teach in the building.

  26. Sounds like SMCC/LCC will be the game of the week on Mlive. Current voting has SMCC game with 75% of the votes. Voting ends today at 3.

  27. JB,

Jefferson put 9 guys within 2 feet of the LOS. The other 2 defensive players were 5 yards off. Very hard to block all those players. Thus the WR were wide open on every pass play. You cant load the Box this year vs CC, 7, 12 and 4 will tear you up in the passiNg game.

  28. the poster that said the Riverview D was pushed around all night was either not at the game or his son plays offensive line for GI. I was there and seen Riverview stuff GI twice inside the 10, once at the goalline and had the 3rd and long several times. Your QB carried your team most of the night and the 90 yard pick 6 helped a little dont ya think. You are probably admiring the Colvin Cup that your son helped win because you could never win one yourself when you played at GI, so get over yourself and appreciate that it was a 7-6 game after 3 quarters. Enjoy the ride GI your run of QBs that can carry you is almost over then you are headed back to not revelant like the 10:12 blogger was in his day. Remember tradition never graduates.

  29. CC did good in the league, I still have my doubts about how good the league is. CC's line did ok, but I did see Jefferson handle them fairly well. CC didn't rush that well until mid to late 3rd qtr. If were rating the line based on sacks, well the QB is very mobile and rolls out as soon as the line collapses. And when the line is really in trouble #7 will launch a pass to #4 or #12. The line obviously did enough to get the job done, but they are not overpowering by any means. We will see the rest of the way.

#9 for Milan definitely best running back in league. He is faster than CC's #4 and slices through the holes better. #9 tore us up at Jefferson, #4 was not very effective against Jefferson. Lako was their horse.
Lako is a great back, right there with #9.

Not sure where this Jefferson talk is coming from. No changes till after season over.

    JB

  30. 10:11 poster I agree with a lot of your points, but Yellow Jacket Football is killing FR. They practice at FR then use Carlson's facilities. Carlson has a beautiful facility where these kids play. The days of dad telling your boy where to go is long gone. It's all about them, not the team, which is sad. For ex if johnny is in the FR district and plays with some Carlson guys at that facility and they make friendships a lot of those kids are going to go to Carlson. THE ONLY reason and I'll tell you the ONLY reason FR kids have been staying was because of Coach O. My son had him at Junior football camp and summer baseball camp and he loved him. That was the only thing holding these kids here. Now that he is gone you could see a huge change. Not that he was doing anything special it was the rapport he developed how he made FR a special place without having material things.

One thing I was hoping he would have done was develop a junior football program. That would have helped in about 5-6 years down the road.

Now you said you used to compete at FR. Not all the good athletes play 3 sports anymore. The league has changed too. When you played Huron had 500-600 kids now they have 900 same with Riverview, Airport and Jefferson has been up to 900 but they are down to 700. FR is land locked they won't go much about 600 if ever.

Hogg will not come back. Mentzer would be a great hire, but he understands all of these dynamics. Ed Phillips..?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? LOL.. What they need to do is have a statewide search and bring in a big name an older guy that has rebuilt and understands what it takes. Now if that happens the administration would have to work with him. Meaning getting out of the league for a few years to get kids out. Starting junior football, etc. FR football will die in the HL if they don't make a change soon.

I know of several junior high kids that are going to transfer now. Are the dads dumb for this? I dont' think so because they see the writing on the wall. Do they want their kids to get blasted every week in the HL against teams 2 times their size, no. They're seeing it. You're also going to lose good sophs and freshman here. I don't know them as well, but I can see a lot of the soph talent leaving FR. That is the best football class they have.
FR administration needs to step up. If they care they will if not they'll be ok with 1 or 2 wins possibly 4 with a good group then the program dies. Do they want success in football there or not?

    1. I agree that the yellow jackets are useless to FR. A lot of parents have moved their kids to Huron's program. Either way if you have a good player you will get recruited by the other parents. Yellow jackets are recruiting for Carlson and Airport, Huron for Huron. Tom wanted to start a junior program to stop the bleeding. Problem was, no one would help him. It takes a lot of parents to get something started. I offered what little time i had to try to get the ball rolling but there were no other takers.

The solution is simple. Help. Talk to every kid at the school and get them on the field. Brow beat them until they finally say yes. Don't wait for others to do it because they won't. Don't wait for the coaches because they won't. I started recruiting kids during baseball season. Yes, you're busy. So am I. It won't get better until everyone starts to put forth some effort instead of just showing up for games and gossiping in the stands.

  31. WE need to get more Balance on Offense @ Jeff so it a Good idea in my eyes. Give the coaches credit for realizing that things needed vamped instead of just beating it into the ground.

    1. Why don't Jefferson's defense stop someone first coach offensive side has hope with Qb receivers coming back and running back worry is deffense

  32. I think Hogg is the special teams guy at CC. Hoffman runs the D and Giarmo the O. Guess I just don't see someone leaving CC for FR.

  33. Jefferson should go back to the army playbook and run triple option or hawaii when june jones was coach and just pass the ball every play. They need to pick someting and stop changing it.

  34. I am a Flat Rock graduate and was fortunate enough to play on some winning teams in all three sports during my days at the Old Flat Rock High. We were the smallest school in the league. Pretty much every athlete participated in three sports. There was no specialization. We were just athletes.

This is my humble opinion. There are four viable options to replace the departed Tom Oestrike as football coach. These are in no particular order.
    1) Approach FR graduate Robb Hogg (currently on the SMCC staff) He is a former head football coach at FR. He has been at SMCC for the better part of a decade. He could implement their offensive and defensive systems at FR. 2) Approach FR graduate Cliff Mentzer. He has a very good coaching background and has always been known as a players coach. I believe he is currently helping with the program in a minor role. 3) Do a big search and try and find an established coach and teacher who is looking to come back to the area. Sell him on the small town atmosphere with a big city close by. You must offer him a teaching job. 4) Find a guy like an Ed Phillips (former varsity coach at Summit Academy and current president of the Woodhaven Jr. Football program) I understand Summit's program isn't that great, but he did some good things when he was there. I believe he left for political reasons (It's a coaching carousel over there). He has enough contacts to bring in some open enrollment kids which usually amounts to $7200 a kid in state aid.

Whoever comes into the program as coach must change the apathy of the student body and the athletes who refuse to play football. Bring back football camp when the FR kids use to go away and immerse themselves in the sport. They fund raised as a team and earned their way to camp. That is where FR players became a team. They did everything together for a week. It was eat and sleep everything football. They became close with each other and with the coaches.

Another thing that must be done is to get Flat Rock people back in the Yellow Jackets program. That is how you build your base. FR had a great rivalry with Carlson because those kids grew up playing together. In high school they would end up playing against each other. It fueled the rivalry and the friendships! If hijacking the Yellow Jackets doesn't work, then start your own youth program like Huron did. We have all seen the results of 100's of kids playing youth football then going on to the same school.

Finally, if a kid doesn't want to go to Flat Rock then let them leave. You want kids who want to be there. I am convinced that no kids want to leave their friends. It usually starts with dad, who says maybe we should go here. You aren't going anywhere dad, your kid would be. Your kid is only young once, let him play the game he loves with his friends.

    Anyway, just my opinion.

  35. Jefferson won the BB state championship with an offensive line that averaged just over 190 pounds. CC won the class B state championship with a couple of 220 pounders. The key is some play makers In key situations and belief in what your doing. Jefferson ran the same play over and over, sound familiar.

    1. Not surprised instead of working with what is working and building on that they're throwing baby out with bath water these coaches askkids to buy in they do then instead of coaches putting effort into teaching kids to block right or run routes or throw to right guy .take time to develope .problem not kids or offense .defense was not good coaching was bad.that's why record isn't better .

  36. Just found out today that Jefferson is going back the Cisco playbook of running the ball. I don't understand why they would change with one game left. They haven't been able to run all year. Their best players are QB and WR's on offense. Those boys need new coaches next season

    1. Don't they know you can run with offense they had this year.just use different formations. need new line coaches both side of ball would Help

  37. Well folks, the FR school board and administration really botched this one up…… They need to gut the program and start over. I am going to bet 4 or 5 top players leave or quit playing.

If FR drags this out they will lose kids and when you lose kids you lose funding and other things suffer. Studies show that succes in sports, particularly football raises test scores of the school over all. Parents bed to write the school board ASAP to get action otherwise they will get nothing!

  38. We to need move forward and concentrate on Friday night. What's done is done. Everyone had their chance at CC so hats off to them and let's all move on.

  39. Who are these people who say that the CC O-Line gets pushed around? Are they just reading the roster and assuming that because they aren't 6'10" & 350lbs. each? Maybe they should attend a game and actually watch the lineplay. Even when a couple of the starters went out due to injury or a well needed rest, the back-ups never lost a step. These kids are interchangeable. Every team in the Huron League got gutted up the middle. GI did the best against them, and they had bigger guys in the band.

  40. This could well be the end of FR football. Coach O was the last hope to bring this team back. I dont see anyone who is around the school that can do any better then him unless they go outside for help. Coach O was flat rock football. I hope I am wrong. This one just hit me hard.

    For the kids
    ram pride

  41. 28-7 isn't within 3 scores. It is three scores. And you were fortunate that they played probably their worst game of the year against you.

  42. Seriously? SMCC Linemen getting pushed around? I guess someone didn't see any of the games this year or read anything about the games afterwards. Let me think here, which team was it that came with in three scores of SMCC? Oh wait, that's right none of them did. I think it's crazy that at this point in the season people are still making such comments. These kids have put their heart and soul into their TEAM and they play well. Every single one of them. In this case size does not matter. Heart, determination and teamwork accomplish the goal. Obviously, since SMCC has gone up against so many other teams with such a HUGE size advantage and ended up with the most important thing of any game… A WIN!

  43. Yes, OC is Tom Oestrike. He was offered the Dundee AD job. He turned in his two week notice last week as football coach and school employee. He is coaching this week against Stockbridge and will be starting at Dundee in the next week or so.

I have known Tom since 1999 when I coached him in basketball at FR. We have remained good friends since.

  44. Who pushes them around ? I have watched every SMCC game and I would like you to tell me who pushed them around. You cant because it never happens. Sure on a play here and there but the fact is those smaller kids have been taking it to all your superior and giant kids. I'll take all the kids from CC any day !!

  45. Why does everyone think CC has a great offensive line. They have some good lineman, however their guards and center are the size of skill position players. They are not bad lineman however the lack of size on the o-line has caused cc some problems, especially against teams who have physical and bigger defensive lineman. They get pushed around.

  46. OK… Milans chances are as follows.

They must win of course which will be no small task. DCD is in the same boat as Milan, however they curently have 6 more POP's. Win and DCD is pretty much in at 5-4. Milan currently sits at 40.75 POP's. Lets do the math for next week if the favorites win in the Huron league and see where that puts Milan.

First of all, Marshall, Flat Rock and Airport are decided underdogs. So I will have them losing. All others I will have winning.

That would put Milan at about 49.7 POP's. That is a bit low normally but I know this year that more 5-4 teams will make it in, just by how things are playing out this year.

IF Marshall and FR were to somehow win that would help Milans case greatly. That would be 2 more points putting them at 51.7 or so. Which would be huge.. that might be a good number.

So Milan fans.. you are rooting hard for all the HL teams to win this week. Could Airport beat Tecumseh? Maybe but Tecumseh is playing for their playoff lives as well, sitting at 5-3. They will have enough to make it in even if they lose though. But nobody wants to leave it to the POP.. get your 6.

So by looking at the numbers, if the favs win in wk 9 I would say Milan is on the outside looking in.. I don't think anyone under 50 is getting in. Milan needs some upsets to happen, like FR, Airport and Marshall winning. Especially Marshall and FR since they beat them and would mean 2 more playoff points. If the Jets win it would only mean another .1 POP's. But everyone counts!

If the folks at Milan have any questions I will be waiting to answer any.

    Good luck to all.

  47. MILAN is hoping the league does well in wk 9. I'll do my calculations here in a minute as to playoff points if they win.

  48. Thanks for the folks that think my kid is one of the best in the league. He works so hard off the field to make improvements. There are some really good backs in the league. AP kid is really good. Both backs #4 and #28 from SMCC are really good. But then again I think my 8 year old daughter could rush for 100 yards a game with SMCC offensive line! They are really good too!
Congrats to SMCC for winning the league. With out a doubt the best huron team.
Hopefully Milan can win Friday night and get in the playoffs. Good luck to everyone.
    #9 Dad

  49. SMCC @ LCC is going to be one heck of a game. I wish I could go and watch, but it looks like I'll have to follow MLive's coverage of it. In my opinion, SMCC has this game down. They did a good job of containing LCC's offense last year, when they won 49-20. With an improved defense this year, and a passing game, SMCC will win. My prediction is 35-14.

  50. Huron had a great year!
Varsity looks beast…Jv is strong. They are meshing well and Huron football is going to be tough to beat in the upcomng years..the jr chiefs program is really helping and Coach Kalbfleish took a losing program to a sense of pride

    CHIEF PRIDE

  51. Best RB in the league is the kid that torched Airport on Friday, #9Dad your son is a stud! GI-Robichaud would be a great Round 1 matchup. We could very well see a Huron-Riverview rematch in Round 1. Yes Airport giving up 45 was frustrating. I knew they would have a hard time with Lindeman, but they couldnt stop Milan's quick passing game all night. SMCC's tough schedule will have them ready to make a nice playoff run. Hey Chris if you wanna ride the SMCC bus you better not pick Lansing CC LOL. EM

  52. Chris what do u think about the junior varsity programs? Milan and Jefferson took a a dive I think and flat rock looks like they have a good class coming up. CC wasn't to tough this year eithier

    1. Another year with Jefferson Qb and receivers working together should help Jefferson start on rode to recovery .No matter if they change coaches or not

  53. My pick would be Lindeman. He is in the top 25 in the state for rushing yards. He is sitting over 1100 AND he is just a sophomore. Lots of good RB in the league but he's my pick. The kid is a beast! congrats to SMCC for wining the league, they have lots of talent and they just flat out beat everyone in the HL this year, my hats off to them.

  54. Chris, Don't let the haters get to you. I never have, and yes it was awesome to watch that Riverview Defense get pushed around all night. The Colvin Cup looks very nice on my mantel.
