SMCC @ Riverview

SMCC (6-0) is coming off of a 43-0 drubbing of Milan while Riverview (5-1) hammered Flat Rock 53-6. The Falcons won a shootout last season and have taken four of the last five in the series. These two teams are considered the traditional powers of the league based on all-time winning percentages.

SMCC continues it’s dominance of the league with the same rushing attack along with an opportunistic passing attack. The defense ranks one of the best in the state and has given up just 14 points in 5 league games.

Riverview has simply reloaded from last season. The running game has been solid and the Pirates are capable of throwing the ball if necessary. The Pirate defense has been solid as well this year and are giving up 12 ppg if league play.

This should be the stiffest test that SMCC will face in the regular season. The Pirates are big and athletic and should be able to move the ball. Stopping the Falcons will be a different story.

Although there is one more league game left after this week, this amounts to a championship game. If Riverview wins they could get a share of the title, if SMCC wins they most likely win the championship outright. Prediction SMCC 32 Riverview 14

  1. This SMCC team would beat many of the past teams Jack has coached, man they are special…..up on riverview 27-0 at half

  2. What was the score of the Huron game? How many points has SMCC given up/game this year? This club has the opportunity to set records this year.

Turnovers will be key come playoff time.

  3. I was unaware Jim Nantz was a Huron League fan. LOL. Nice comments, Those percentages are since the teams started playing in the 60's. They do not reflect more recent times when head to head records have evened out considerably in the last 15 years.
Heres a few over the last 15, might even surprise you.

    Jeff vs SMCC 8-7 Jefferson
    SMCC vs View 11-4 SMCC
    SMCC vs Airport 8-7 SMCC
    Airport Vs Jeff 14-2 Airport.

Theres a little more parity with SMCC than I thought. Airport vs Jefferson is surprising.

  4. Friday night's matchup is special in the way that Riverview football has never been voted for MLive Detroit Game of the Week. It also marks the first time ever that an out-of-area team, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, is one of the featured teams in the Game of the Week.

Also, it is the first time a Huron League game has been named MLive Detroit Game of the Week. Luckily, it is stacked up to be a good one.

St. Mary CC (6-0, 5-0) has been a dominant presence in the Huron League since it began in the late 1960's. Riverview (5-1, 4-1) has had a rich history of winning seasons in the Huron league as a well, and is off to its third 5-1 start in the last four seasons.

Here are five key things to watch heading into Friday night's 7 p.m. matchup:

    1. St. Mary CC's defense is stifling: St. Mary CC does not succeed so well from year to year by luck. It does so by bringing a maximized and organized team effort to the field. This year, the Falcons defense has been nothing short of dominant, allowing just 27 points all season and just 14 in league play.

"We talk about the team, the team, the team," St. Mary CC coach Jack Giarmo said. "Every person has a job to do and they have a responsibility. When they do it, we can play good defense."

    2. Potential for a "track meet" game: Even with St. Mary CC's defense performing so well right now, nothing is a guarantee when facing Riverview. Last year, the two teams combined to score 105 points, with the Falcons winning, 56-49. The year before, St. Mary CC won another shootout, 61-42. When Riverview last won in 2011, the 31-29 score seemed rather tame in comparison.

Could Friday's matchup continue the high-scoring trend?

"Possibly," Giarmo said. "That's what I'm scared to death about. I don't want that to happen and I don't think their coach wants it either."

    3. Riverview's offense is keeping the pace after record setting season in 2013: Last year, the Pirates offense set a program record for points scored with 439 points in 10 games, an average of 43.9 points per game. Although the Riverview offense has not kept up that average through the first six weeks of this season, its 34.33 points per game is currently second best in program history.

Riverview got a boost last week when it beat Flat Rock, 53-6, scoring 33 of those points in the second quarter.

    4. Riverview's balanced offense should test SMCC's speed on defense: If there is one thing that Riverview has been succeeding at this season, it is running the ball. With plenty of capable athletes to carry the ball, Eric Gant has been able to carry a bulk of the load this season. With the ability to pick up yards right through the heart of the defense, Gant is a dangerous weapon.

Yet, Riverview quarterback Drew Kroll is capable of throwing the ball around 25 times a game, helping balance out the Pirates' offensive scheme and keeping opposing defenses scrambling.

SMCC does have speed in the secondary and can really chase down the ball carrier. However, keeping to assignments will be key for the Falcons as Riverview has big-play potential.

    5. St. Mary CC looking to build on historical success against Riverview: Despite some close games over the last few years, the Falcons have won eight of the last 10 meetings against Riverview, holding a 25-12 all-time record against the Pirates.

In fact, St. Mary's CC is the only team in the Huron League that Riverview has a sub-.500 all-time winning percentage against. Yet, the Falcon's .676 win percentage over Riverview is actually the lowest win percentage that it has against a league opponent besides Milan (.619).

  5. To whoever was talking about SMCC's NT being 5'7" and 125 lbs, you're wrong. He is 5'7", but he's not 125 lbs. He will move big guys and plow through people if he gets the chance, I've seen it happen many time. This person is #26 Mitchell Lamour, who also happens to be one of CC's dangerous RBs. Let him be a good example of size doesn't matter.

  6. Pinkava boys are beasts. They come to play. They will be all out tomorrow. That's just to name a few. I happen to know those boys. Should be a heck of a game

  7. Should be an awesome game. The Views new coach is 5-1. Pretty good start. The View has some big boys and more where that came from. CC is tough to wear down and since CC's starters probly haven't played a full game all season, they will wear down at the end. Pirates will prevail.
150 TO 180lb kids can only take on 220 to 240lb kids so long. If it stays close throughout, could get ugly in the 4th. Tackle Carribino every play. He will wear out too.

    1. In your dreams. RV will lose by at least three touchdowns. Rv you dont expect to win to a team that has dominated you in the last ten games. Wish I could see game but…I'LL hear tomorrow night.

    2. CC has not dominated Riverview in every game for the last 10. Do you remember 2011, when riverview went 8-1? Was a close game, no "dominating" on either side.

  8. Riverview will give CC a good battle. But CC will chip away at the little stuff until something finally breaks. Run Carrabino 10 times for 3 yards. Finally, the 11th run he will beak one.

Most teams can not continually withstand that. The only way to beat CC is wear them out or have some very serious talent. I highly doubt you will wear them out, they rotate a lot. Plus the Views talent is decent but not any superstars.

Should be a heck of a game, but I think CC will prevail.

    CC 21 VIEW 14

  9. I am not sure if anyone noticed, snooze2you has Huron playing Riverview in the first round right now. That would be a great game to see if it lines up that way.

  10. You're all insane with these high scoring games, remember CC has only let, what was it, 6 or 7 PPG? Riverview will not score more than 10. Now with the respect of Riverview's Defense, I don't think CC will score very much either. #45 Chase will play the game of his life, can't say much for the rest of them though.

  11. I played both teams and I still feel I should not have lost to Riverview. Smcc will clearly win on paper and on the field. Call me check back. Check back friday night n we'll see.

  12. Smcc the REAL DEAL c'mon man seriously. Riverview is going to expose there weekness which is there tiny offensive and defensive line. Riverview will push Smcc around. Riverview is going to take it to which looks like a JV team down!!

    1. Smcc's offense line always is tiny every year but they still kick ass and push the "slower" big guys around like is no big deal

  13. SMCC is a lot bigger than you think. Tight end blocks as well as he catches. They are physical up front and I think they will have no problem moving the ball. If you give them 8yds. A pop they will take it and own the time of possession. As much as I would like to see Riverview win I think it's 24-7 SMCC they are the real deal this year.

  14. Is CCs team this year better than last years team?.. I haven't seen them play yet but I'm hearing they look great

  15. As an outsider who Has watched both teams play, SMCC will crush Riverview. Riverview has a nice team and might even win a playoff game this year. However, they are not good enough offensively to hang with SMCC. Their defense is very solid, but SMCC is a machine this year. SMCC is much better than they have been the last few years and have the size, backs, and defense to go all the way in my opinion. Going into D6 I don't see anybody testing them until the later rounds either being lumen Christi or Ithaca. Also very well coached and think this could be third-year to knock off losing the D1QB. Just an opinion and good luck to both teams.

    Milan Fan

  16. I don't bash teams. I try to just out out my opinion with out hurting feelings or bad mouthing. So here is my opinion. We have played both these teams and we lost. (Milan). In my opinion I feel the Riverview game was a game Milan should have won. Only reason I say that is it was early in the season and we failed to execute on both sides of the ball. If we were to play now I would have to give Riverview the upper hand. With SMCC it was a butt kickin that we was not going to avoid. Milan could have made a game of in the first half if the first play didn't go for an 80 yard score. The point that I'm making is Riverview has the D to compete but SMCC has that "nothin special" offense that is so hard to stop. Switch sides and SMCC has the better D to stop Riverviews O. I'm sorry to hurt anyone's feelings but no one in our leage will beat SMCC. The offense might not put up 40+ pints Friday but they will put up 21. And Riverview will be lucky to get 10. It will be the toughest test for SMCC but they are too good with that simple offense and the defense has proven they are the dominate side of their team. Good luck to both teams. Should be a great game to watch. #9 Dad

  17. Week after week I see the same thing. "Smcc is too small" IT DOESNT MATTER! Coming from a former player I know that size does not matter, they work hard in the offseason and get the job done with technique and discipline. I also know that the beefy right tackle and right tight end are big key players when it comes to moving people. The guards may not be the fastest but they get the job done.

  18. Pirates lead the league this year in sending players to the bench with concussions. Not a stat to be proud of, but tells you something about there hitting.

    See you Friday.

  19. Wow! If there's one thing that The Riverview Public School System has taught, it is how to TALK! The problem is, you haven't said anything that hasn't already been said. We've heard it all. Got anything new? Our O & D Lines are small. It's physics. We pay the referees. We haven't played well enough to win our games. We recruit all of our players. We don't belong in a Public School League.
Got anything new? I just hope we can get on the field, what with all of your GIGANTIC players, and the rest of the stadium taken up by the fan's mouths. We might not make it out alive!
Good Luck Pirates. Try not to be like everyone else.

    1. You need to get your story straight. Riverview fans and alumni are the only ones in this forum who support and respect CC. Go back through the forums and you won't find anybody from Riverview complaining about CC recruiting or needing to be in a different league. I'll wait.

  20. It's been established for many years that CC does what they do better than anyone else in the league Get off the ball with tough fast players using speed and deception. Every defense that has ever been thrown at them has already been game planned for by great coaching and experience. The ONLY way to stop their offense is to play physically tougher with discipline. High school D tackles always come up the field too far when they don't get blocked and get driven 15 yards back when they stand up and get doubled. CC knows how to scheme all defenses. The tee doesn't work in college or pro because everyone on the field is fast and tough. So, Bucs bring your toughest hitters with an unselfish willingness to do "your" job instead of chase what you think you see. They will find the guy who is not doing their job. Don't be that guy

  21. Look people SMCC is Small on the O-line Riverview will be stuffing the trap all night long.Smcc NT is 5foot7 125lbs. Riverview will run it down there throats!! WATCH and see!!

  22. Riverviews new coach will have a great game plan. 5-1 in his first season so far, NO COACH around here has done that in their first year. He also brings some things the Huron League hasn't seen.

Riverview improving every week, played Huron early. Should be a heck of a game. On paper THE VIEW should win, I'm sticking with the paper.

    VIEW 15 SMCC 13

  23. CC's center and 2 guards are very small not sure how they move those big boys they've played against but they seem to get the job done. Let's see if they can do it against riverview, I don't think they will be able to.
    Riverveiw- 28
    CC-21

  24. NPG, come now, that score is a bit lopsided. I give view more respect than that. I just hope for a victory, whatever the score.

  25. After watching CC destroy a couple opponents and also one of Riverview's victories, their records prove this is going to be the Game of Year in the HL. Windham and Company continue to play above their size. Another lopsided win for CC?? CC's team defense probably is the X-Factor. HL Fan

  26. This is probably the Huron League game of the season. Say all you want about how small SMCC's players are, because most of them are. Those players are clearly better than the bigger guys most teams have. With the O-line, fierce running game, Windham at QB, one of the best defences in the state, Riverview doesn't have a chance.

    SMCC – 42
    Riverview – 7

    -NPG

  27. The temptation to drive out to View to watch this one is great. I'm pulling for View to win this one. Be nice to see CC with a 1 in the loss column lol good luck to both. It's bound to be a good one!

    KC

  28. CCs center and 2 guards are under size and not that strong, they will have a hard time with the front of the bigger stronger riverview players! Stop the trap you stop CC. Riverview 35 CC 14

  29. Riverview is a good squad, cant see how Huron beat them. Must have had a few guys out. I believe Riverview will give CC a serious battle. The Views new coach has a lot in the arsenal and a good defense. Riverview only giving up 12 points a game so far. Riverview at home.

    Riverview 21- CC 20

    JB

  30. You said it Chris riverview is simply to big and athletic for the Monroe CC boys!! Better bring your A game CC!! Go Bucks!!
