Huron League Thoughts and Questions

When was the last time SMCC was held to 64 yards rushing?

I assuming Milan’s Trace Lindeman will be fully healthy for the Riverview game.

Huron’s Mike Suchy is a very good Defensive Coordinator. He doesn’t get enough credit.

Looks like Jefferson went “back to the beach” with that running game. Over 309 yards on the ground.

Riverview must be very good defensively.

It doesn’t get any easier for Flat Rock this week.

Airport’s Darryl Mossburg is a very good Defensive Coordinator. That game Friday should have not have been that close.

It doesn’t get any easier for Grosse Ile this week.

What Huron League player would take first to start a team with?

I think I overestimated how good Airport and Grosse Ile would be.

It is kind of laughable how comments come and go about teams after they win or lose.

You ever have to sit at a game next to someone you aren’t really fond of?

Was anyone impressed with Harbaugh and Michigan on Thursday?

Was anyone impressed with Michigan State on Friday?

  1. To poster 12:51
How does Milan tip their plays? Have have more plays out of the same formation than I can count. The QB option with #9 is so hard to defend due to the fact both can bust one wide open in a hurry. Meech, that's what we call him, the QB, has a very strong arm and is very mobile. In my book he is a true dual threat QB. Milan has some very good receivers in Elam and Price. Last year everyone said " follow 8 to the ball", this year is different.
Milan has so much talent at the skill positions and a very strong o-line. They got a lot of confidence last week and it should carry over this week. If Milan wins Friday night, which I think they will, watch out, cause that will turbo boost their confidence for the remainder of the year.
RV is a great team and they are very physical but so is Milan. Both teams want that physical hard fought game, both need to minimize mistakes, penalties and turnovers. That will most likely decide the winner. In 2 games the starting O for Milan has 1 fumble and 4 penalties, that's pretty dang good.

  2. To the poster from 9/8 7:42 AM, I felt the same way after the game at Marshall but I felt a little better about Milan's passing game after the Flat Rock game. They didn't try to throw it in the first half, but I think that was more about the coaches challenging the team to rally around the ground game to set the tone. In the second half, they dove into the playbook more. While connecting on only 3 of 6 passes, Barnes' throws looked much better than in Week 1.

Within this offense, Milan can be very effective with their bubble screens and quick throws–they block on the edge really well. Barnes also nearly connected with Cam Elam on a skinny post in the end zone. The pass was thrown high intentionally to fit it in a tight window and the ball just went off the receiver's fingertips. To see a risky throw be put right on the money (and to see the coaches call for that play) was a good sign to me. It showed to me that there Milan is working on diversifying their offense and becoming even tougher to defend.

  3. Thanks for keeping the blog around Chris! It makes it easy for me to keep up to date while at work every day of my life. Also saw the post calling an athlete out how ridiculous. Thank you for being a great coach and making me realize what a pleasure it is to coach!. Go Rams/Chiefs until three years ago I never thought I would say that. Btw how does Fryer look running the ball this year?

  4. Hey Chris! I have an idea for monetizing your site. Add video! Living in Colorado, doing some coaching myself makes it hard to get back to see games. I don't expect you to create a whole production studio, but maybe pay some entrepreneurial kids a few bucks to go to the "game of the week" and put together a highlight reel. I would pay for that. I would also be interested in interviews with coaches as long as it is short and insightful. I have no idea who many of the coaches are because they weren't around when I played. Anyway, keep up the good work and Go Rams!

  5. Just my opion but Riverview is going to struggle all season if they don't find themselves a quarterback. .they used 2 different QB friday and both were not very good! Defense looked good all night

  6. Thoughts on FR had a tough game friday the o-line was a little rough and I think they buttered up the football before the game cause we couldn't get a grip on it lol. It's going to be another tough week this Friday smcc isn't going to take it easy, shore up the o-line give the qb a few seconds to let the plays develop and find the handle on the ball . Let's be honest coming from 18 straight losses are we looking to win the games aginst milan, smcc, huron no , but using them to get the kids ready for winnable game is a step in the right direction. FRF

  7. 7:43 – It isn't about figuring out exactly who the person is who's saying those things, but at least makes them think twice about posting whatever they're going to post. Sure, it can be whatever identity they want, but it is an identity nonetheless. That would cut down on the inappropriate posts and make people accountable for their words.

  8. Log ins would probably ruin the crazy comments. Some are fun, some ridiculous. Sometimes many of these comments need to be said. I know many of you are on here often, but just because you put your initials doesn't mean your still not anonymous. I have a good idea who bn is because I was also involved in CYO sports. No idea who KC is. Heard you owned a bar in Taylor. Otherwise, no idea.

    JB. LOL.

    1. KC is my first and last name initials; Kenneth (Kenny) Cavill. 22 years old. Huron graduate (2011) living in New Boston. Played freshman and JV, opted out Senior year to work instead of play (worse mistake of my life and biggest regret) The Cavill Lounge in Taylor was my fathers Uncle's, who sold the bar sometime ago under terms to keep the name. Any other questions, ask ahead. I have no secrets 🙂

  9. I like seeing Chris fired up. Agree totally with what Chris said. I think most of us get caught up in this crap and it really means nothing. The kids are the ones playing the game. I bet most would not post crap if you had to put a name on it. My new pledge to use initials. JL

  10. Couldn't agree more. I love this blog and I hope you continue it. For what it's worth, I know for a fact that there are great parents at every school. My oldest son Thomas has played baseball against and as a team mate with several kids from different schools. And all the parents like the Windahms from SMCC, hope I spelled that right, are a class act. He played with a kid from Jefferson , also great people. And never have I heard them bash a kid by name. Bashing kids publicly is wrong. Admitting they made mistakes is fine. Friends of mine back home in Tennessee are dealing with the same issues.
I myself have no problem telling my opinion or putting my name toward something I say. Maybe Chris you should have people sign their name. Then they would be more worried about their comments.
Now, I think Riverview matched up well against SMCC and feel they should have won. I watched the film on them. I think Riverview does not match up well on Milan. But that's why we play the game. This should be a great game Friday and hopefully Milan plays just like they did against FR. Maybe the game of the week?

  11. Whined? Okay whatever you say. I simply don't like dickheads who call out 16 and 17 year old kids by name and call them garbage and how they will never be any good. I simply ask for some etiquette when people comment, especially from candy asses who hide behind the name anonymous. Got it candy ass?

    1. Yeah I wasn't too impressed with Michigan, the defense will be solid this year, while the offense will struggle unless they get better qb play and run blocking. What little I watched of MSU the offense looked good and the defense looked so so. MSU-Oregon is definitely must see TV Saturday night. Your right Huron's D coordinator is underrated, I think Huron has the best defensive front in the league and maybe the best overall defense. The real question is when was the last time SMCC was held to 64 rushing yards and won? Yes Chris I sat next to an older gentlemen at the 2009 Airport-Huron football game, needless to say he didn't appreciate me and my wife rooting for Airport lol. EM

    2. I find it funny when people comment but don't put a name. The Internet is a true keyboard warriors favorite place when you can hide behind anonymity. Love it!

  12. Comments "come and go" about teams because you whined about people needing to be nice. Comments aren't allowed besides "Gee golly all these teams look great! Great matchups coming this Friday!"

  13. Looked like smcc offensive line had no problem with the Bucs D line. Not sure why more yardage was not gained. Loosing Lako would hurt any team. They do have a good big back that was out with a injury. When he is back I would think there will not be low gains like last week. Curious to watch Riverview play Huron.

  14. Did notice at smcc game that the line blocked well. Not sure why they did not gain more. Riverview linebackers played well.

  15. I've been watching Airport football for 30 years, pre Redmond, during Redmond, post Redmond. I have had no kids at Airport, just a high school football fan and live in Ash Twnship, my kids went to private school. Something has happened to the kids in the district the past 5-7 years???? The team is slow, small, has very little talent and has no depth. It's not the kids fault, they seem to play with heart and passion, never giving up but there is no skill. It's not the coaches fault, Baas and Mossberg are good coaches as are the rest of the staff. You can't coach no talent but you can coach them out of every little bit they have and I think they do that. Is Huron so much better because of the Huronriver Yellow Jackets junior football program?? I see a bunch of Airport students, big, athletic kids watching the games, why are they not playing?? Specialized sports?? I know some are JUST baseball players but some should be on the field. Not sure what the answer is but until it's fixed, Airport fails. They may not win a game this year.

    1. I agree but disagree at the same time. Redmond was fortunate to have some of the best classes of athletes Airport has ever had. When he had talent he competed for the HL, when he didn't they were 6-3 and out bin the first round. Good or great coaches are determined by what you get out of your best and least talented classes. There is no reason they can't put a better product on the field. As coaches go, you can't say someone is good without a track record of being good. At some point you have to be successful to be considered "good."

  16. Here's my 2 cents worth when it comes to comments as teams win and lose, and also the drastic changes we've seen so far compared to last year:

    AS PLAYERS GRADUATE, TEAMS CHANGE.

Great players can make mediocre coaches look great and mediocre players can make great coaches look mediocre, at best. Great coaches should adapt and can't expect a team to perform as they did in previous years when they were more successful. What worked last year may not work this year.

I've watched 4 teams play this year. Although I agree Riverview's defense has improved, SMCC doesn't have the hutspa they've had the last 2 years as far as a running game is concerned. New players, whole new ball game. Work with them to improve and adapt both during timeouts and in practice. Instant feedback when mistakes are made is the key to improvement, when it is fresh in a player's mind. I didn't see that here.
GI tried to run the ball up the middle again and again with no success. Jefferson ran the same 2 plays against them, successfully, and the defense didn't adapt. If you try something over and over with no change and expect a different outcome, why that's the definition of INSANITY.

Teams should plan with the strengths of their current players in mind and shouldn't expect the same skill set and especially, the same knowledge of the game of previous players. We as fans shouldn't expect it either. That would also be insane.

  17. Riverview has a very good run defense- I am sure they were keying in on Carribino like they should on Lindeman this week. Michigan is just going to need a little time-watch out in 2 years. I believe Mi State overlooked Western just a tad looking toward Oregon this week.(I would have) Huge Game!!

    1. That's where adversity comes in to play for Milan. Lindeman isn't the only player that can run the ball this year, they have 2 other players who can move it just as well but not as fast. Good luck stopping all 3.

  18. very impressed with how Jefferson bounced back after the Ida loss. didn't think it would happen. glad to see them finally come together with a good game.
