Riverview @ SMCC

Both Riverview and SMCC won their season openers. Riverview trounced Ecorse 47-0 while SMCC crushed Tecumseh 62-39. The Falcons won last year’s game 33-0 and lead the all time series 26-12.

Riverview is led on offense by junior QB Donnell Williams and senior RB Eric Gant. Defensively the Pirates are led by Tyler Chase and Wyatt Gardocki.

SMCC will run their typical explosive straight T offense which features one of the best backs in the league in Justin Carrabino. The Falcon defense will look to shore things up after giving up 39 points last week.

This is the game of the week in the Huron League and should give the winner a league up on a run to the league title. This should be a slugfest that features a bunch of yards on the ground. Pick: SMCC 27 Riverview 21

  1. I agree film is a big deal to study and learn the other teams formation and plays; but just because you learn their formations doesn't mean you don't have to know the fundamentals of football to stop the play. I agree that size isn't a big deal, but what is knowledge of their play if you can't make a tackle and stop the play? Because you tried a caca tackle and failed, or you were overpowered by a lineman bigger than you who made the block on you. Size isn't everything BUT it does work to the advantage sometimes.

  2. Carribino is an average running back and will struggle with no supporting backs around him. SMCC will be 6-3 in the league, win a regional championship in D6 and lose badly after that.
Berger is playing good at qb and would have been over 250 if receivers caught the balls they were supposed to.

  3. Too small is BS. Its about the film. watch film all week, see what the other team does. You see guys on this blog point out what teams do all the time. Come on people. watch the films. If you know what they are doing, it doesn't matter the size.

  4. Yea, let's leave the discipline thing and working harder out of the equation. If that were the case Army and Navy would be the two top college programs every year in every sport.

Now with that said, if all things are equal or close then working harder and discipline come into play every time.

  5. This is for the Haters:

Why would a student want to go to SMCC or why would a parent want to send their kid to SMCC? Again this is for those who speak poorly of SMCC. Ready GO.

    Lets hear it.

  6. Your right guys and girls SMCC will never have the facilities public schools have . But one thing is for sure our teams will work hard and play hard and never complain about what facilities we do or don't have. We have very good and respectable kids at SMCC, not perfect and not saying the best, because that would be arrogant . We let the wins and loses speak for themselves. These haters and jealous people have been around forever and bashing us since I can remember, that's because we win !!!!! And don't forget everything starts at home from your parents or parent. It doesn't matter your social status when it comes from right or wrong and how to talk !!!!!!! I really feel sorry for these haters !!! We're talking about high school sports …. Your plain miserable people!!!! And your going to continue to be miserable if your following SMCC,because we WIN !!!!!

  7. I, personally, LOVE to be hated every week by all of the unwashed masses. We may not have everything that the huge public schools have, but we have outnumbered many home fans all over the area, we support our boys no matter what, and we have 3 of those things that some of the other schools don't have in football. Our girls aren't too shabby either, in volleyball and softball. 3 State Championships in one year really must have given you haters ulcers. Pardon me for sounding arrogant. I saw many of you haters in the stands at Ford Field last fall with your green on. Only thing was it was your skin tone, from envy, not your Falcon green from your supportive jerseys and t-shirts. One more thing to chew on. Wow! Those Championship rings get kind of heavy!

    1. This is a very ignorant post. I was at Ford Field proudly wearing my Riverview shirt on the CC side to show my support as a member of the Huron League. The only thing heavy is your big head.

    2. Large and in charge. Obviously you didn't read my posting that closely. It was directed towards the haters. The dopes who never give us credit for anything we do. The morons who want us to join a Catholic leauge. The brain surgeons who want to place an asterisk on our championships. The idiots who badmouth our kids, our field, our facilities, and everything we say or do. If everyone is tired of us, win! Win, and we'll lick our wounds, regroup and hope for better days. But we WILL be back!
Riverview pounded the crud out of us Friday night. I can admit that. I don't need to portray it any other way. We were very lucky to win the game. Do me a favor and do the same to Huron!

  8. Prey? ha. whatever. Far from that. I would rather lose a few, be somewhat average than be arrogant and hated every week. 6 fans, a tiny bleacher, no home anything, besides a gym.

  9. 10:21 – thank you for motivating my son by saying he was to small in the trenches. He moved your big boys with ease. Thanks for telling my son he was not hungry enough. Both teams played very hard tonight and have a ton of respect for Riverview but your post makes you look like a fool.

  10. I also didn't hold a chip on my shoulder when Huron lost to Orchard Lake neither. nor will I hold a chip on my shoulder if Huron were to lose again to SMCC. Want to know why? Both teams were state champions and Hurons only losses last year. I'm not gonna cry wolf about it because Huron has come a long way and is finally shining and doing something with the program. When you've been at the bottom and watched your alma mater crap the bed since 6th grade; you tend to forget about who's on what team when YOUR own team finally starts making things happen.

As for the hard working public schools losing to private schools… Last I checked; EVERY kid was made of the same substances. Are you saying that because it's a "private" school that they have super genetically modified students!? No. They don't. They have students that work harder than yours, and it shows when it comes game time. The private school banter is old. I've watched it the last 5 years on this blog. And SMCC has been up and down in the league. But soon as they win; it's because their a "private" school and recruit. Smh.

As for Hartwick; here we go again. Hartwick is a TALENTED ass QB. The kid can do it all! But if he wanted to attend SMCC then that's his choice. But he's at Huron. (If I remember correctly he was a transfer from Milan? And the banter then was "school of choice") He's leading their team and he's finding his play makers within his team. He is your average kid who I know has busted his ass to be the QB he is. You want a QB like him? Find someone who will Work hard like him. I seem to be repeating myself on this blog, but if you want to be the best, PRACTICE HARDER.

Your Bucks could be better than SMCC. Don't make excuses because they're "private"… Admit that they're working harder when it shows on the field. Good luck tonight tho!

    1. It's not always about working harder. That is a simplistic viewpoint of someone who cheers for a consistently good team. The truth is that some teams just have better players. It is what it is. I don't know why that's so hard to understand.

  11. Thanks KC. Sure you wouldn't say that if Hartwick went to SMCC instead of Huron.
Most of us live in school districts that SMCC has taken some great athletes from. Bedford has been on the list for awhile. Woodson, now Welch. As long as SMCC is in the Huron league, there will be bickering. Its not apples to apples and winning a public school state championship will always have an asterisk. They are not a public school. All subjects come up on a blog, not just X's and O's

By the way, it does matter. Some very good hard working public school teams have lost to some stacked private school teams. Including your own school. You really think Orchard Lake should be in same class as Huron. Not right. Not fair to the kids. All teams are not assembled the same.

    GO BUCKS!!

  12. You are delusional 10:21. SMCC dominated you in the trenches last year and return alot of those same lineman. Your weak defense got exposed every time you played a good offense last year. Same thing will happen tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if SMCC forces a running clock at some point.

  13. Riverview wins this game by 3 tds. The defense is the worst defense at SMCC since they didn't make the playoffs back in 2011. The offense is ok but not strong enough up front to move the big bodies at Riverview. Riverview is hungrier than SMCC, they want it more. SMCC thinks that will run the ball up and down the field but watch how many 3 and outs happen tomorrow night. This team is just not as good as people think. New coaching staff won't be able to make adjustments to Riverview's strength up front. SMCC loses tomorrow and the whole league will see their flaws and how weak they are up front. Enjoy your past success because that train has left town. Just one man speaking the truth and everyone will see in less than 24 hours.

    1. If you think riverview is going to win by 21 points over a team that dropped 63 on Tecumseh last week than you sir are out of your mind. I expect a close game but that prediction is ridiculous.

  14. Talk is cheap from all sides. The team that wins in the trenches, plays the best defense and gets stops, plus make the least mistakes wins. Riverview u has to find a way to stop SMCC. SMCC can't stop themselves. SMCC WILL HAVE TO BE MUCH BETTER TACKLERS. RIVERVIEW MUST STICK TO THE RUN AND NOT PANIC AND START WINGING THE BALL. This game when it's all said and done is very simple. don't beat yourself.

  15. Heard Slagle is getting limited playing time for cc after leaving the game against Tecumseh with a sprained ankle last Thursday

  16. We were in the ford field stands cheering and hoping for a huron league state champ last year. Smcc did it and snapped the ithaca win streak. Tomorrow night, will be on the view side looking to beat you. Should be a good one !! By the way, there is no way smcc is better than last year, let's be real — that was a once in a century team, especially the defense….. Give your state champs their due.

  17. SMCC has to have a successful sports program or they will cease to exist. Obviously you have to have something to make people pay to go there.

We all know that most kids do not pay $9500 to go there. I'm sure anybody new definitely doesn't pay that. If they all did, you would have the facilities Riverview Gabriel Richard and Toledo Catholic Central have. It is what it is. None of us would want SMCC to close, but it just is very unfair to see your attempts to attract kids with billboards and ads in the paper.

By the way, I did NOT say anything about free. I do wonder why SMCC would be chosen over Toledo Catholic Central. That is a no brainer, not in favor of SMCC. I'm sure its all about his faith.

  18. Last I recalled this was the Hurong League Football blog. The the basketball blog. Or the Tuition to religion blog. Quit with the bickering. Say what you think is gonna happen at the game and then let the boys pads do the talking. If you're mad that a kid wants to go to CC and pay to play then maybe you should send your kid as well. Or leave your kid to his team and let him fight it out on the field. At the end of the day? It doesn't matter. The fight is on the field. Not the blog. And they're all just kids. Quit forgetting that.

  19. If I remember right in JV ball last year SMCC beat Huron, Riverview beat SMCC, & Huron beat Riverview. So all 3 had great teams, how this translates to the Varsity remains to be seen.

  20. After all the stuff going on at Bedford there has been about 10 kids transfer out I hear. Call up and pretend you have a stud athlete and you can see how free it is. Dumb comments with no validity. I'm sure he went Smcc because they are such a powerhouse they are just an average class c school. If it was for basketball wouldn't he go to a romulus or milan or head to toledo.

  21. Talk all you want about "too small of a line" or "wearing out Carribino" or "loosing too many good players from last year" but you know Smcc will win thsi league this year.

    1. No one has mentioned the small line on here, the reference to losing good players was about BASKETBALL, and if you tackle any running back every play, he's going to be worn out. Especially a 5'6" tiny one. Not saying SMCC won't win the league but don't put things in our mouths that we didn't say and don't pretend like carrabino is a world beater.

    2. 1. Why are we talking basketball during fball season? 2.last week someone mentioned that SMCC lost too many good players and they have too small of a line for football and your right about tackling RBs every play. Oh by the way I don't think Carribino is a "world beater". Don't put words in my mouth.

  22. Great. He was on Bedfords Varsity as a freshman. Should make SMCC a contender this year with all the losses from last year. Wonder how all this came about. Him and Umfress.

Wonder if any other H.L. schools are picking up any athletes for the upcoming season.

  23. So does anybody know this 6ft 8 kid I have been getting tweeted about that has joined the SMCC basketball team? Nobody I know has heard of him. I am certain he is fully interested in a religious education and paying full tuition though.

  24. Unfortunately he didn't go to the summer workouts and is no longer on the team. Freshman Football players had to move in late June and take a summer class. He didn't end up doing that. For whatever reason, not sure.

  25. Tackle Carrabino every play. Seen it done before. Wears him out.

Bring night goggles too. Need them at Navarre. Film, Film, film. CC is studying it right now.

    Riverview 28 CC 24

  26. Riverview had a good team last year and learned a lot from their shortfalls, plus they picked up some great kids from a very good JV team. SMCC all run this year. No Windham or Vuich. Stuff the box. A not good Tecumseh team scored almost 40 last week against SMCC. The VIEW will win it this year.

    Riverview 42 – SMCC 28

  27. Should be a heck of a game. I believe Riverview has the most starters back in the league except for Milan. CC's defense won't be as good as last year but the offense could be more explosive. Tough call, I'll take the home team SMCC 28-27. EM

  28. SMCC had 3 players go to the MAC from last years team. Howey and Vuich to Toledo and Lako to Akron. But B1G would be awesome

    1. Glad to hear these kids are competing at the next level. I looked up the rosters and I don't see Howey on UT. Did he end up going somewhere else?

  29. SMCC wins by 4 td's. Riverview will have no answer for the T. I say Riverview will do ok on O. 14-21 points. Problem is SMCC will score at least 42-49.

  30. Should be a great game. I think SMCC scores more points, though. That offense is going to be hard to stop this year. 54 – 28 SMCC wins. Interesting tidbit, CC TE/DE Riley Woolford is visiting Indiana this weekend. It'd be cool for a guy from the HL go to the Big Ten.
