Early Preseason Predictions

Obviously a little early. Here is some food for thought. Should be a really competitive league. There probably isn’t a great team in the league, but there is some very very good talent and every team should be solid.

1) Riverview, making switch to the straight T?

2) SMCC, must replace the entire offensive line.

3) Huron, life after Hartwick?

3) Milan, return maybe the best two offensive players in the league.

5) Airport, best defensive player in the league in Brent Mossburg.

5) Grosse Ile, loads of experience.

7) Flat Rock, only lost six seniors.

8) Jefferson, graduated some talented seniors.

  1. I like the dads on here pushing their kids. Mossberg has many teammates as good as he is. No I in team. Same with Laplante. Definitely no I in team at SMCC.

Sports are fun, entertaining thoughts of sports scholarships is also fun. Focus on academics, the scholarships pay way more. Been there, done that. Sorry folks.

  2. I wouldn't count out SMCC.While I doubt they'll win outright, I do think they have a real good chance to contend. Huron will be back to where they were, bottom feeders. Milan or Riverview should be tops.

  3. This airport class is not up there with airports 03/06/08 seniors (02/05/07 seasons). Those groups of kids were all extremely close and played hard, tough football.

I'd bet that Laplante has the best chance to play next level, guys been putting in a lot of work. A LOT.

  4. Airport might win 5 games this year. Other than Mossberg all of the talent is in the upcoming Junior and Sophmore classes.

  5. Airport had the one of the best if not the best JV team in the Huron League last year. Then you add a highly recruited defender like Mossburg and return some good kids in the trenches and you have the makings of a likely playoff team. With an exception for Riverview and MAYBE Milan, I don't see any other opponents having more talent.

    1. Im saying that they have had good JV teams the last couple years with no results last year. Good JV and 1-8 team losing seniors doesn't automatically make a sure playoff team. I dont think they'll go over 500

  6. Jefferson has good hard nosed kids, but I don't think they can compete when it comes to the X's and O's honestly

  7. Milan will be ok, but some kids have to grow up fast. They have some good talent and numbers are up across the board, but they lost a special senior class of some really nice football players. They will be competative in every game, but not a favorite when you lose so many good players. They will have to prove it before they get my respect. Good hard working kids though and Hoskins has weeded out the bad seeds who were not willing to work. Has cost him in numbers over the last few years, but overall has changed the program into a yearly contender.

The Huron League will be as even across the board as it has ever been. Like I said before, I believe coaching will decide the toss up games.

  8. Samuels got a full ride??? I seriously doubt it. He couldn't even start on his own team in HS. I other back was way better in my opinion.

  9. Ok Milan fans I see what you are up to.
Your just going to stay quiet and just unleash the Beast on the field. Ha! I have been around the league long enough to know that you always have a great team. I'm sure you are going to be serious contenders. I am going to say my early pick is you Milan especially because you do have the two best offensive players at QB and RB. I'm sure you will have a strong O and D line as well. See you on the field.

  10. Whoever is picking Riverview to compete for Huron League is extremely optimistic. Chase is gone, Gardocki is gone, Gubinni is gone, Sparks is gone, and starting QB from last year just tore his ACL and MCL and done for whole senior season. Milan will run away with title.

    1. I don't think anyone "will run away" with the title. Some teams may have a better season outlook, but the end of the season almost never is exact to what speculation is. Chris and many bloggers here do a nice job in their analysis; even your critique of Riverview. I speculate SMCC, Milan and Riverview all contend. They also were the top 3 teams last season and probably had the most unseen depth.

    1. It is true they lost very good players in their QB and WR. Nonetheless, they return 9 starters on defense, another very gifted receiver, their starting TE, RB, FB, and much of the offense line. On top of this, they have more depth than in years past. This team has been young, learned a lot, and has grown up together. Also, you aren't giving this coaching staff, who has brought some excitement back to FR football, or the kids, who have worked so hard since the end of last season, very much credit. I'm not making any predictions, but I do believe Flat Rock will surprise some.

    1. Frysinger kicked my butt on a regular basis. One of the top 5 players I played against. He was a pretty good guy too. Now that we are getting into the season, most of the posts will be about current teams, but an interesting thing to hear would be opions from players in different eras who they found to be the best players to go against. Just something to think about for the future off season.

  11. La plant was the best defensive player we faced last year along with the D-lineman from SMCC who was an absolute beast.

  12. Wouldnt want to over look Mike Furtney from Milan. 6-6 265. He should have a great year after starting both ways last year as a sophomore. Getting high major looks from across the country and with two years left of HS football, the ceiling is high. Could be the first Power 5 conference kid out of the Huron League. Heard he picked up his first Division 1 offer from Eastern a few months back. Not sure if anyone else has offered since.

Chris…. Has any Huron league player played on a full ride other than the Mac? I know a kid from airport went to Western and the lineman from Riverview went to Central. Milan had Gunderson, but he was a Preferred walk ok. Just wondered if Maybe someone did back in the day.

  13. Huron will be better than Airport. Airport gave up 30 pts per game last season. Hype doesn't make for a great defense, "team" does.

  14. When will you people understand that JV football has nothing to do with varsity football. It's hilarious reading these posts. Coaches develope players and like it or not JV coaching staffs are usually very average across the board. A varsity team with great coaches and mediocre talent will almost always beat a varsity team with average coaching and better talent. JV is about developing kids to be good varsity players. I'm sorry, but records at the lower levels only matter if the kids are being coached up. Should be a great year where most teams in the league are competitive across the board. Look for the the best coaches who prepare hardest and are the smartest to win the toss up games. Anyone who knows the Huron league knows the coaches I'm talking about.

  15. Huron beat Airport in JV last season 28-12 @ Airport. Huron's JV was 8-1. They lost to Riverview 32-20.Their most impressive win was over undefeated Saline 35-7.

  16. 10:52am poster>> The Jets have several talented sophomores who will now be juniors coming up to varsity. Their JV team was one of the best if not the best in the Huron League. Add those kids in with Mossburg, Four, and a few other seniors and I think you have a playoff team. This will be a down year in terms of talent for the Huron League which is why I see Airport getting at least 4 wins in the league on top of non-league wins over Dundee and Tecumseh who are nowhere near the caliber of a prototypical Huron League program. People said the same thing about the Jets in 2002 when that 2004 class was juniors. Coach Baus mixing in more spread offense and having the likely Defense Player of the Year will be major plusses for the Jets this season.

    1. LaPlante might have something to show regarding D player of the year. He had a much better season last year than Mossberg.

  17. Flat Rock will still get Summit this year. It takes time to turn around an 0-9 program. I see Milan winning the Huron League with Airport and Riverview coming close. My son will be a junior this year for Airport. We are all excited for this upcoming season with the sophomore class moving up to varsity. Is it true SMCC lost some kids to transfers?

  18. Grafton Inn. You need to push yourself away from the bar at the Grafton Inn. Who are these seniors you speak of and where were they last year? Frederick is a good lineman and Mossburg might be the best player in the league. Mike Four who is a junior is a very good back. They have a great soph class. I see 4-5 wins. If you think FR wins 5 games you're getting into the hard stuff. Remember Jefferson beat them last year and FR lost their all everything QB.

  19. That was a great hire for Summit. Al Demps is a very good coach. It will take a few years to right the ship over there. Last season the Dragons went 0-9 and didn't have a JV team by the end of the season. Any players who follow him from Robichaud would be required to sit 180 day per MHSAA rules. None of them would be eligible until the 2017 season. No exceptions. Best rule the MHSAA has instituted in a while.

  20. Flat rock might get more than they want with DH Robichaud coach taking over summit. I'm sure he will be bringing a hand full of good players with him and he is known as one of the better inner city coaches.

  21. GI was a very good team last year??? Really. I remember Milan being up 41-0 at halftime at the island on their homecoming…….how good were they??? lol

  22. Grafton Inn I love the confidence but let's take it one game at a time, after all we did go 1-8 last year. Personally I think Airport is a year away from contending in the league, if they do it a year early I'll gladly admit I was wrong. I do believe a winning record and possibly 6 wins is attainable. EM

  23. How is everyone sleeping on Grosse Ile. They were a very good team last year and only lost their star reciever. I think they are the team to beat in the huron league this year.

  24. I think it is important to remember that Airport was 1-8 last season. A winning season would be a good goal.

  25. I think this could be an big year for the Huron League in regards to playoffs. Airport, Milan, Riverview, Huron all make playoffs this year.

Airport has more than 2 good players on their squad. They bring up a few very good players from last year's JV team plus Mossburg, Four, and some linemen. Airport could make some noise in D3 with this senior and sophomore class, especially if they draw a downriver team. Like someone else said earlier, this team is strikingly close to or better than the 2002 and 2005 Jets at first glance. There are high expectations in town and it is an exciting time for Jets football. Riverview could be another team that makes a deep playoff run now that Allen Park will have a new coach. Riverview vs. SMCC in week 2 will be a big game for both programs. Could this be the year SMCC starts off 0-2? More troubling, could they start off 0-3 because Flat Rock JV destroyed their JV team last year (I believe it was something like 50-14) and Huron has been inching closer to SMCC although I doubt Coach Kiph and his staff would get out coached by New Boston Huron.

The surprise team in the Huron League could be Flat Rock. They made huge strides last year and bring up a very good JV team.I could see Flat Rock sneaking into the playoffs at 5-4 with wins over Romulus Summit, Jefferson, Hazel Park, Grosse Ile and SMCC (I know several people close to their program who are predicting a down year for them).

    1. SMCC will have to have a "very down year" for Flat Rock to beat them. However they could be pretty bruised up from the first two games on their schedule. Wich will lead to a tough third game. Just a thought. Should be interesting. I like your excitement Grafton Inn but Airport is still a year away from a playoff win.

  26. As a Riverview parent I can tell you that they ran the T last year their last 4 games. Not 100% but probably half the time. Still going to take some learning but they don't have a battering ram at Fullback anymore.

  27. Airport will beat FR and Jefferson the rest of their games will be tough for them. You have to have more than a couple good players.

  28. Grafton Inn- that Kool aid must have some alcohol in it down there in Carleton. Or too much mouthwash. Rid the nasty taste.

  29. This will be an exciting year for the Huron League in my opinion. There are several teams capable of winning the league this year which hasn't happened in awhile.
    My predictions for 2016:
    1) Milan- returns some of the best players in the league. I could see them finishing 8-1 or 9-0 if they stay healthy.
    2) Airport- will have the best defense in the league, explosive backfield, plus potential Huron League Player of the Year in Mossburg. Have heard he is getting looks from numerous MAC schools.
    3) Huron- Has more talent than anyone else in the league. Is it true they are scrapping their spread offense?
    4) Riverview- Will endure some growing pains with the new offense but still in top tier of the league.
    5) SMCC- Alot of question marks for the Falcons. Last year's JV team doesn't look bright for the future either.
    6) Grosse Ile- Could jump to 4 or 3. Staying healthy is key for the Devils.
    7) Flat Rock- Will build off of last year's momentum. I could see them finishing 3-6 or 4-5
    8) Jefferson- Typical tough kids like any Jefferson team but they just can't seem to put it all together. I see them finishing 1-8 with a win over Owosso in week 9. New staff for the Bears in 2017?

  30. you guys are all sleeping on Airport! This is the best senior class they have had since Slayton, Morias and that group. They have the ability to win any game on the schedule as long as they show up. Mark my words

    1. Idk Airport has had some really good senior classes since then. But point taken and I hope your right. EM

  31. no one count jefferson out last season was an improvement, jefferson has a chance with humphrey back! riverview is favorite

  32. Airport hasn't had a good team in the last 5-6 years. Until they actually win 6-7 games in a season that bad taste is gonna be a yearly one. I'm glad they had a good JV team though

  33. GI has not made a defensive adjustment in 5 years lol. Playing 4-4 cover 3 100 percent of the time might have worked in the old days, but they will get eaten alive by good offenses

  34. Airport already making excuses about Dundee. If they lose its cause Dundee has Jack. If they win it's because they drank scope

  35. Everyone watch out, Airport has a bad taste in their mouth.
Riverview going to the T will be interesting.
    GI could win the league.
    They need Listerine in Carleton

  36. Airports Seniors didn't believe in their underclassmen with sophomores and juniors making up much of the teams starters. I believe coming off a 1-8 season it'll spark a fire under their butts. Airport will be underestimated and I wont be surprised if they do well this coming season. Alot of starters returning with a bad taste in their mouth…

  37. Riverview lost a ton of really good players. They always re-load, but if they are really making the switch to the T, they might be in trouble. That is not an offense you just run in year 1 and master. There will be a lot of mistakes and questioning of the staff if they really switch 100% of the time to the T. Better call Dundee and see if Jack will be there "offensive consultant" lol

  38. Should be a great year in the league, most wide open league race in years. Can't wait to see the talented sophomores from last year's JV on the varsity level for Airport. I would agree that Milan returns the top 2 offensive players in the league but not much experience elsewhere. Even without Hardwick I expect Huron in the top half of the league. Not sure why Riverview is the favorite. I thought they lost alot but I could be wrong, at least the rest of the league won't have to worry about that battering ram at fullback. Even though SMCC lost quite a bit I'm still not ready to count them out. GI could be a real sleeper with all the experience they return. EM

    1. I agree that you cannot count out SMCC. I said before last season that I though the league was up for grabs and most games would go down to the fourth qtr.The only league game that did was Riverview. I do think this year will be a differant story however- Time will tell.
