SMCC at Riverview Preview

Please be sure to check out the podcast SMCC @ Riverview Preview Podcast

Both teams are coming off of week 1 losses. SMCC (0-1) fell to Pewamo-Westphaila 30-20 while Riverview lost to Romulus 32-14. It was the first opening week loss for either team in five seasons. The Falcons won last year’s match up 14-12 and lead the all-time series 27-12.

Offensively SMCC will be run happy as usual.  The Falcons rushed for 250 yards in the opener and really only threw the ball late in the game when trailing. The bulk of the offense will revolve around senior Kevin LaPrad and junior Collin Woolford. Defensively the Falcons will once agin be led by senior DE Justin LaPlante.

Riverview was less than stellar in the opener, but that may be due to some growing pains. Riverview’s offense is pretty much one-dimensional like the Falcons and will feature senior RB Kaylon Paynes-Brown. The defense is led by Nick Walsh, the Pirates will need to get better quickly against the run if they are going to stop the visitors from Monroe.

This should be a hard-nosed throw back style of game between to teams that will run the ball 95% of the time. Neither team can afford another loss at this juncture of the season. Prediction: SMCC 26 Riverview 14

  1. In my opinion coach Adam Kipf has his hands full with this team.. they are young and lack true star power especially on offense. I think he is a great coach and does a fantastic job with what they have but with Flint being out I think they are in trouble. THE VIEW 28 SMCC 18

  2. That Riverview team in 2004 was great. The head coach for Riverview was Brian Flint. SMCC grad and the Father of the SMCC QB.

  3. We can argue all day. Romulus has some incredible athletes, but maybe not a great team as a whole. P-W has a great team, but maybe not too many outstanding athletes.

Watch film. Watch film. Watch Film. Much easier to stop a few athletes with some strategy than a whole team. Ask SMCC how they have beaten some very good opponents by stopping their studs. Ask Milan how they lose when a team watches their film and easily stops their studs.

    That's all folks !!!!!

  4. What is this, I'm NOT an SMCC fan then a bunch of praise for SMCC. Yeah, right. Whatever. I'm not an SMCC fan and have nothing good to say. No pretending here.

  5. 3:57 poster P.W is about the same size as most Huron league teams look at the Rosters..Romulus has 2 kids over 350 multiple over 220 and over 200 they also have several kids being looked at by colleges. Some can argue they have a weak schedule but you can't argue size and speed and talent. There is no doubt CC has a well coached team and some very good players. Riverview also is well coached but running a new system and a young team I expect it to be a very close battle.

  6. Agree with 5:21. Does Romulus have good kids that are big and fast…. Yes they do. But they don't play anyone and didn't beat a single good team last year. Poorly coached and will go 9-0 this season not beating one good team on the schedule. If you don't believe me go look at Michigan football.com. Their only chance at a loss is Dearborn this year.

They also have 929 in the school which is slightly smaller than Riverviews enrollment. They would be middle of the pack in the Huron League. Sorry. Just facts. They would lose to SMCC, Milan, Airport for sure and possibly GI and Huron as well.

Friday will tell all. Not a SMCC fan or have anything against Riverview. I just know that Romulus is no River Rouge. Was honestly surprised Riverview lost to them. If SMCC played P-W as well as they did, this game could get out of hand. I think SMCC is gonna be hard to beat this year in the league.

  7. At 405. I'm not an SMCC fan I'm a GI fan but please don't bring the light dimmer into their success. They beat teams everywhere including ford field against a team with a 69 game winning streak.

  8. Lets not get things twisted here.. Romulus is a fine team and does play a class A schedule. However, they do not play good teams. Riverview would probably go 6-2 with that schedule.

  9. Doesn't P-W have like 280 kids? How could they possibly have won. Maybe there's a more controlled team with a lot more reps per player with a smaller team. Good offense is all repetition.

Where's that smaller school beating a bigger school enthusiasm. I think there's something to it.

  10. Romulus is not a bad team folks. 6-3 last year, made playoffs, they are class A with a Class A schedule. This game will be close. SMCC much slower than Romulus, plus the lights aren't on a dimmer like Navarre.

I think MHSAA should make a fluorescent football rule so we can get away from this T garbage. LOL. Not exciting at all, just stalls and eats clock.

  11. Smcc may not be as big and as fast as Romulus. But between wolfard. Laplante. O'brien. And Laprad. I expect a healthy Smcc to manhandle the Bucs. And don't let tall skinny Haut fool you. That kid brings it too. These kids fly to the ball. And the sophomore play last week excessed all expectations for falcon fans. These kids are mean. PW was twice the size of all HL teams. Good luck pirates. Throttle down FALCONS!!!!

  12. Lol SMCC WILL NoT win by 40. Romulus is a rather good team. I'm guessing you weren't st the game. They have some kids that will flat out make you look stupid in space. This game will be close.

  13. If Riverview was down by 32 in the 3rd, then this could be a running clock. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they threw one pass the whole game and it was picked. If your down by 5 touchdowns, you might want to pass the ball at least a couple times. No plays over 10 yds the whole game. This could get ugly. SMCC 42 Riverview 6

  14. Not to hurt anyones feelings, but Romulus is average and as far as coaching goes, below average. SMCC wins by 40

  15. I have a tight tight game here. Its tough to play at Riverview. Is Flint healthy?
Did SMCC clean up the special teams play? If both of those answers are no then they are in trouble.

  16. A lot of Riverviews varsity team last week played in their first varsity game ever with few seniors against a very Big and fast team. This will not be the case this week although still a young team SMCC is not as big or as fast as ROMULUS. Look for the Bugs to make this a competitive game and upset SMCC.

    Bucs-20
    SMCC-18

  17. I agree with 822. Know that CC rushed for 250 yards against PW last week (a far superior opponent) has got to have View concerned.

  18. A strong CC run game playing a weak run defense is never a good thing… for the team lacking run defense. The View has lost too many players, and will not have the guns to go the distance. CC will run it down their throats until they break them, then they will run it some more.
