Huron @ SMCC

Please check out the podcast: Huron @ SMCC

The Chiefs (2-1) are coming off of a 39-24 home loss to Grosse Ile while SMCC (2-1) picked up a 44-15 victory over Flat Rock at Navarre Field. The Falcons defeated the Chiefs last season 27-7 and lead the all-time series 46-1. Huron’s only victory against the Falcons came 30 years ago when the Chiefs won 42-6.

Huron struggled to run the ball against GI last week. Junior QB Brett McKay was able to throw for 267 yards and 3 TD’s in the loss. The Chief’s senior LB Nik Becker continued his strong senior season as he recorded 10 tackles.

The Falcons continue to rely on senior RB  Kevin LaPrad and junior RB Collin Woolford. The running game continues to get better each week as the Catholics new offensive line gains valuable experience. SMCC’s defense has only given up 21 points in league play after surrendering 30 in the season opener.

On paper this looks like a close game that could go either way. In the preseason I would have picked Huron in this match up, but the Falcons are playing much better than anticipated and they have reeled off 29 straight victories in the series. Prediction: SMCC 30 Huron 21

  1. Here are some teams that run the T. SMCC, Constantine, Zeeland West, Traverse City St. Francis, Hudson, Muskegon Catholic Central. Tell me its easy to stop.

It only looks simple. That's the problem. It isn't. It is the most intricate offense of this day. The blocking schemes are masterful. The wizardry of the QB hiding and faking with the ball. The RBs carrying out fakes like nobody else.

People confuse the spread as masterful these days. But take a look at the spread teams in our own league… guess what, they all want to run the ball. GI, Milan, Huron, FR and so on. Go 3 or 4 wide.. wide splits by the offensive line and RUN THE BALL with their best athlete. It can be affective but it all depends on one thing. BLOCKING. The T is predicated on blocking. Its all the offense is.. blocking. very few trick plays.. all the work in practice is on blocking. period. Which is the most important thing at any level of football along with tackling.

Most people that are not in the know think the T is a 3 yards and a cloud of dust type offense. Well, it can be but most often it isn't. The T is a big play offense. When teams put 9 in the box… bam over the top to the 6'5 TE. When teams put 7 in the box… bam the trap goes for 50 yards or the power goes for 10 over and over. SMCC has the most big yardage plays since running the T in the league by a large large margin. More than Milan and more than GI. Add Huron to that list as well.

Whatever you think the T is, it most likely isn't. That's why coaches have a hard time stopping it. It looks and appears to be much different than it really is.

  2. There are a few ways to stop the T. I don't really understand the mystery in stopping it. It is rarely used anymore, Its not used at the next level, but with all the years of SMCC using this offense, I am highly disappointed that many coaches around here have never devised a plan to stop it. I think GI will stop it this year and that's about it. Huron and Milan are too soft to stop it all game.

You would think teams that run the offense themselves would have a better understanding and stop it. Not so far.
Good Luck Huron, PLAY SOME SERIOUS D.

It will be a close game

    SMCC – 28- Huron 22

  3. In LCC, Ithaca and Constantine you just mentioned state powerhouses. Most teams would have trouble with them. However SMCC is 1-1 vs Ithaca. How many teams can say that over the last 10 years? 2-2 vs Constantine and 1-2 vs LCC. SMCC owns GI. let's leave them out of it. 13-3 since SMCC started running the T. Milan is slightly better at 11-5. Riverview 14-3.

  4. Clinton will be D7 but I doubt anyone is looking towards the playoffs in week 5 but you. SMCC is 6-1 vs Clinton. Worry. Doubt it.

  5. You stop the T by outscoring it. If your offense turns it over or has too many staled drives you will lose. T offenses burn the clock. You must get the T offenses behind on down and distance which starts by stuffing them on 1st and 2nd down. Several defenses can be effective, but can your team consistently be disciplined and take the pounding every play. If so you can win, if not it will be a long night. The teams that have beat SMCC in the past were way more physical and brought it the entire game. (LCC, Clinton, Constantine, Ithaca, sometimes GI, Milan, and Riverview had teams that could hold their own).

  6. Teams can run the spread all they want. Sooner or later however your are going to have to come into the phone booth and get punched in the mouth.

  7. Has nothing to do with confidence. Huron won't be able to run the football and when you can't do that at the HS level, it's just hard to win games.

    SMCC 28 Huron 0

  8. SMCC is well coached and play very solid football making very few mistakes. But this isn't as big or fast of a team as some of their dominate teams of the past. Huron will likely be able to move the ball thru the air against them. But if there O line turns in a performance like last week against GI the pass game may again not be enough. So for Huron I think they run the ball with any kind of success they make the series 46-2.

  9. Huron has never ever. I their wildest dreams had more talent. I believe the record speaks for itself. Breakout week for Dominc Flint. He's back to full health looked great last week. Worry about Laprad and wolford all you want. -You can't hit what you can't see
    Huron may not score.
    See you under the "lights"

  10. How about the entire Defense lines up 5 yards back in a line, as soon as the ball is snapped, they run full speed at the line. Just have a massive collision at the line, nowhere for the ball carrier to go. Problem solved! Lol

  11. It's pretty simple–you keep the ball on the ground you slow down the game and control the clock. You pass and three things happen and only one is good. Simple. It works.

  12. The T just seems like a gimmick offense. When you don't have enough athletes, just have everyone bombard the hole and have the carrier follow.

  13. I think the Falcons are just too much. That offense is for some reason the hardest offense in the league to stop. I would love to see an upset but I don't think it will happen. SMCC wins.

  14. Close game here. This game, however early, has playoff implications. SMCC may struggle to get to wins and Huron might struggle to get to 6. The predicted needed wins for both teams to make the playoffs. Although Huron may make it in with 5 wins as well. This game will go far as as playoff dreams go. Not to mention the league crown.

  15. Until someone comes up with a good defense to stop this 1940's George Halas T formation, SMCC won't be stopped. As said above, I also believe Huron has more talent, but until someone stops the T , can get a lead and force SMCC into other things, it will be S.O.S

It's a boring, monotonous, uneventful, and non chance taking offense. But hey, that's what they were taught from way back when and everybody is scared to change it. All that matters is winning.

    SMCC 44- Huron 30

    1. That won't happen p-w scored 30 on cc and cc's defense has only gotten better. Btw the past 2 games p-w has outscored their opponents 113-0. Smcc should finish around 7-2 maybe 8-1 in my opinion let us prey

  16. Just curious why Defenses don't stunt their D-Line on every play to confuse the Guards as to who to block against the T. Play 6 lineman and have a variety of stunts to totally confuse the O-Line. Then have Linebackers fill primary holes where they run the majority of their plays. Dictate to them, instead of them shoving 600 LBS. of O-Lineman down on the Linebackers. Don't understand why coaches insist on reading the Guards. T offenses are getting smart about that and having the Guards pull and having their Tackle and both lead blockers plowing the way. Doesn't seem that hard to me.

    1. But if you stunt and guess right as to which hole they're running through, the guards won't find a man to block and the stunting D-Lineman can attack the runner from the side, instead of head-on 5 yards down the field.

  17. Huron has more talent than SMCC for sure. It's been that way for many years but there is no way the SMCC coaches will let their team lose to Huron. My prediction is SMCC 48, Huron 14
