Grosse Ile Red Devils Team Preview 2022

The Grosse Ile Red Devils look to rebound in 2022 after a disappointing 2-7 season last year. Coach John Bodner returns a host of talented players who played as youngsters who could help the Islanders flip the script after last year’s odd year.

Head Coach: John Bodner (16th season 74-82 Overall)

Offense: (Returning Starters 7) The Red Devils return 7 starters on offense including All-State receiver Tyler Swick who caught 61 passes for 835 yards and 6 TD’s. Travis Symons returns at QB this season along with 3 offensive linemen (Jacob Brown, Eian Rush and Aidan Rush). Leading rusher Brody Kelems returns at RB along with Matthew Pizzo who missed most of the season with an injury.

Defense: (Returning Starters 7) The Red Devils gave up nearly 35 ppg last season, but that should change with the top 5 leading tacklers returning from a season ago. The Rush brothers return at LB along with Tyler Fraczek who missed most of the season with an injury. Carson Pace, Brown and Kelems will anchor the defensive line while Swick, Pizzo and Hunter Proctor will solidify the defensive backfield.

Coach’s Outlook: We had a very young team last year that dealt with several injuries that impacted our season. If we can stay healthy, run the football, and execute in all facets of the game we should see some improvement from last year. The team has been working hard and coming together. We are not the biggest team size or depth-wise so we need to make sure we eliminate mistakes and play well throughout the season. The Huron League is always tough with a quality well-coached opponent each and every Friday night so the goal is to be prepared each week to play as well as we can.

FNV Outlook: We have been saying for years that “nobody does more with less” in reference to veteran coach John Bodner. While nobody expects the Red Devils to win the Huron League, they will be a team that challenges for a playoff spot and could win some games in the division 5 playoffs if they earn the opportunity.
