All Time Greats

Thought I would pose a few questions to everyone out there.

Who is the best coach in the Huron League ever and why? (How about I preface this and say since 1970) Here are some to think about: Tom Fagan (T), Larry Dugan (FR), Joe Sanderson (CC), Don Lessner (R), Marc Cisco (J), Eric Redmond (A), and Jack Giarmo (SMCC).

Who is the best player in the League since 1970 and why? Here are some to think about: Dave Steffan (FR), Jack Giarmo (CC), Kevin Oliver (CC), Mike Williams (J) Blake Smolen (GI), Darryl Mossburg (A) Joe Rice (H), Ron Spears (M) Adam Servey (J), Derek Anderson (A), Joe Drennan (GC), Tyler Weclowski (H), Jake Frysinger (GI) and Lee Wilder (J).

  1. that's was an entertaining read….just found it because my kids asked with Coach Lessner died and I forgot the date and had to search on line.

    MCC could recruit players

There was a player at MCC named Chris Thompson..played in 85. One of the baddest players off all time. Full ride to Central.

Steve Rodriguez from Riverview was just as good and much better than the others.

Daryl Mossburg? He wasn't even the best player in the league at the time…but was a great guy.

Ray Jurecki from Grosse Ile was awesome. Scott Agius from Jefferson was a man among boys.

    1. Does anyone remember Flat Rock’s Tom Sekmistrz Linebacker 2000/2001? Hands down hardest hitting player I have ever seen at the high school level. I coached along side Don Lessner from 1999 to 2002, and he often said Sekmistrz proved as a junior to be the best linebacker not only the Huron League has ever seen but the majority of the State has seen. Since then I never seen another player even come close to his talent.

  2. I would say the best player I seen play in the Huron League was Jack Giarmo,he was a two way player who you could not tackle or when he hit you on defense you felt pain for a month

  3. not to bag on ron spears, but he got caught up in some bad stuff and should not be up on as Milan's top player, he doesn't even go to saginaw any more. The character of a player should be taken into effect as well as there overall performance to see if they deserve that right.

And how about David Box from milan as a really good player to represent milan, or jesse walker who went to michigan state on a scholarship

  4. anyone can try to walk on but how many of those actually make it on the team? dont make it sound so easy give the kid some props he's playing D1 football your not.

  5. "Sanderson #1 cisco & lessner right up there. Sanderson always loaded with talent. kevin oliver a good example.
always seem to get good players from all over."

    Kevin Oliver was from Monroe.

    1. Somehow I found this site and post 12 years after. I played at Airport. 1993 on the freshman team, then brought up to varsity in 94, 95, and 96. The best player I played against is pretty hard to choose. You could pick from a few guys on Jefferson’s 94 state championship team, but I’ll throw a few names out. Frysinger from Grosse Ile is a gimme, Adam Tedora from SMCC hit like a Mack truck. Riverview RB Nik Strok was a beast as well. As far as coaches go, Coach Sanderson from SMCCwas outstanding, Coach Cisco from Jefferson, Coach Lessner from Riverview, but I’m gonna be biased and pick Coach Eric Redmond from my alma mater. Coach Red took over just before my senior year and you could tell things were gonna change. My assistant principal caught me one day after school and asked what I thought of Coach Red. I told him you’re gonna have your first Huron League football title in 5 years, he did it in 3. Turned Airport into arguably the best team in Monroe County for 5 or 6 seasons. The program hasn’t been the same since he left.

  6. Weclowski is going D1, The University of Toledo. Just curious about past d1 huron league football players and there success? How do you guys think weclowski will fair? I believe he will be a contributor there before its all said and done. thoughts?

  7. Sanderson #1 cisco & lessner right up there. Sanderson always loaded with talent. kevin oliver a good example.
always seem to get good players from all over.

  8. Three best coaches in Huron League history; Sanderson, Cisco, Lessner (Giarmo closing in). Two best players in Huron League history; Dave Steffen and Jack Giarmo, both all-state, multiple all conference, and most feared players of all time.

  9. Enough of this nonsense. First of all The three top coaches in the Huron League, Sanderson, Cisco, and Lessner. Top two players of all-time, Dave Steffen and Jack Giarmo. All-State, multiple all-conference, great all around athletes, and without a doubt, the two most feared players all time in the Huron League (Rich St. Bernard would be third, but did not finish career in Huron League).

  10. RE: "you guys and your fancy scores here let me prove how well that works Airport lost to chelsea 24-21, Chelsea lost to Pioneer 45-95, Pioneer lost to bedford 28-21, Bedford lost to Airport 30-25….so how did Airport lose to chelsea? never go off of scores…."

Your post makes my point. All of those teams can compete with eachother. All those scores were very close. So if you look at it from that point of view then it is logical to think that my above score comparisons make sense just as yours do.

Hey when its all you have to go on score comparisons are MUCH better than just some yahoo spouting off at the lip making baseless remarks of opinion.

  11. RE: "i hate when people compare teams by saying they lost by 3 but beat them by 12 and then that team beat them by 7 there is absoutly no logic in that."

What is better givng you scores to compare or just making off hand comments in response to nothing?

RE: "also i never said airport has played EGR, OLSM, or Dewitt those are just teams in their division that even if they made it to would lose."

    REALLY! take a look below.

"Im sorry im not really an airport fan but cc would not last with teams like airport/milan had to play in the playoffs this year. They get the powerhouse schools such as Dewitt, EGR, and orchard lake saint marys."

BTW who said that CC could beat those above mentioned teams. Who rattled your chain in regards to that? Why even make a silly comment like that?

I may come off as pompous and a know it all but I do not mean to. I just take offense to others bashing CC or making silly comments.

I put BN at the bottom of all my comments. If my posts bother you then please to do not read them.

  12. How about the fact that D3 Milan and D3 Airport are 7-13 vs SMCC over the last 10 seasons? You never commented on that stat. You voiced your opinion and I did as well. I just gave you more "facts" or scores to go by other than what someone with no real knowledge may just think as you are doing.

Haters always want to pit SMCC vs other top schools in other divisons. why? Why cant they just be great in their own league and in their own division? Your comments make no sense and are just rediculous.

GVSU is a great small college but they would never beat Florida. WHO CARES!

    1) When have I downded Airport?

    2) Can I not praise the school of which I attended and played for?

    3) Show me and ignorant post I have made.

    -BN

  13. you guys and your fancy scores here let me prove how well that works Airport lost to chelsea 24-21, Chelsea lost to Pioneer 45-95, Pioneer lost to bedford 28-21, Bedford lost to Airport 30-25….so how did Airport lose to chelsea? never go off of scores….

  14. i hate when people compare teams by saying they lost by 3 but beat them by 12 and then that team beat them by 7 there is absoutly no logic in that. as for BN hop off your pedestal everyone of you posts is either 1. downing airport 2. praising CC or 3. just ignorant. oh and your facts arent very good CC lost to airport in 2009 21-0 if you wanna get technical. also i never said airport has played EGR, OLSM, or Dewitt those are just teams in their division that even if they made it to would lose. airport, milan, or CC not one of could have been them. yes playoffs are based on school numbers and i never argued that. CC is in the correct division and they do damn well in it. i just believe they wouldnt be able to hang with d1-3 teams in the playoffs nor should they have too.

  15. SMCC lost to Crockett on last second hail mary. Crockett lost to OLSM by 13 who beat Dewitt by 17 and lost to EGR by 3.. Seems to me that it is logical to think that SMCC could compete against OLSM. They may not win but a 2 TD loss to the D2 state runner up is competing.

SMCC beat DDC by 16 who lost to BBR by 13. By the above statement is it crazy to think that SMCC couldnt play with BBR who was a state semi-finalist in D2? Common opponents are all we have to go by.

  16. When did Airport or Milan play Dewitt, EGR or OLSM?

School enrollement places you in the division you belong in. SMCC's puts them in D6. Now going back to your statement, SMCC did play 9 schools in higher divisions and went 8-1. 3 of those wins came against playoff teams.. they trounced Airport 40-22, beat Milan 28-14 and dominated DDC 32-16. You were saying? How bad did Chelsea beat Airport? Was it by more than 18? Im pretty sure it went into OT, SMCC didnt need OT to beat Airport, they beat them by 3TD's.

SMCC dodges nobody when it comes to their schedule. They play large school, private schools, tech schools.. have play book will travel. Last year alone they played Crockett(D3) Airport(D3) Milan(D3) DDC(D3)and so on and so on. In very recent years past they have also played (and beat) Bedford(D1) and Country Day(D4). Just in 2009 they beat Airport by 18 who beat Bedford9D1) by 5 who beat AAP(D1) by 7 who beat Inkster(D2) by 3 and Chelsea(D3) by 36. What this means is SMCC could compete angainst ANYONE…. and they do.

I can promise you this, SMCC would have a better chance of beating the top teams in D3 and D4 than Airport and Milan would have at beating SMCC, Montague, Jackson Lumen, Constantine, TCSF, Nouvel and Mendon.

Bottom line is you have to beat the teams that are put in front of you. SMCC has 400 students, Milan and Airport have 1000. This puts them in different playoff divisions. SMCC cannot help this. However they do play a very tough regular season schedule and do very very well. The best way to prove that SMCC wouldnt do well against teams in D3 or D4 is to have the teams in D3 and D4 beat them soundly. Last time I checked Milan and Aiport(both D3) were a combined 7-13 against SMCC over the last ten years. If Airport and Milan can compete in D3 ,and they have, going to the state quarters 6 times over the last ten years, then most certainly SMCC could do better.

While it may be impossible to say for sure how SMCC would do in higher divisons I think I have showed that by the looks of things they would fair pretty darn well. I try and offer proof and sound logic to my arguments while others offer blind blanket statements with no proof or things to point to.

  17. Im sorry im not really an airport fan but cc would not last with teams like airport/milan had to play in the playoffs this year. They get the powerhouse schools such as Dewitt, EGR, and orchard lake saint marys. Theres not a team in the huron league that could contend with them. Is smcc bad? no, im not trying to bash them in anyway its just how it is.

  18. Who did smcc play in the play offs all Div. C thats what i was talking about. How far do you think they would go if they had to play teams like airport has played in the play offs.

  19. Tj is playing hockey because he wants to. He could have played football somewhere if he wanted to but he chose hockey. Good luck to Tj, Weclowski, and all other college players.

  20. SMCC went undefeated in a the Huron League against 1 Class A and 6 class B schools. So take your weak class C comments elswhere. SMCC proves year in and year out that they can beat anyone, even private schools twice their size.

    -BN

  21. As far as Weclowski let me correct a few things. The guy talking about smcc all the time.First palonnes tackle numbers he played twice as many games every year weclowski would have 200 if he played as many games.
Now team wins smcc has had a better team and there reward is going to the play offs and then playing in a week c div. to go far.Dont compare team stats to indiviual stats. If weclowski was on smcc he may not get 150 tackles but he would have been the leading tackler on that team for sure.
And to say he got so many tackles because he was not on a good team well wheres all the other 150 tacklers from rv,fr,gi,and all the other not so good teams in the state. And dont forrget 28 where againts smcc in a 1 point game where was phonne and tj a 1 point game and he had a intception and ran for a td in that game.
And as far as Hpoly we all no dont we that that award is given out to the best off. and def. player on the team who wins the div.Weclowski won every other award you can win by all the sports writers in the state.HE could of started at the d-2 level but wants to play d-1 even if he has to wait a year or two to start.Tjs playing hockey not football and pannone wont play college not because of how he plays but his size.

  22. "weclowski won 5 games, and pannone has the chance to win 36. do the math that could be four times the games weclowski ever won pplus 1. AND you can throw Brad B from riverview in the mix too"

I think he meant 7X not 4. Weclowski actually won 7 games not that that makes much of a difference. Both great players, one played on a poor team the other on a great team. Both the best in the HL as far as tackling goes. These 2 rarely missed a tackle. Lets just leave it at that.

  23. pannone played 14 not 16 thats over 10 tackles a game two years in a row, era means being sucessful for more than one year. to me i think going into everygame and making above 10 tackles the whole season including 12 in the state championship is pretty darn good. what does size have to do with playrs of the era, were not talking about having chances to go to college, which yes weclowski will win that categorey but as another post said weclowski won 5 games, and pannone has the chance to win 36. do the math that could be four times the games weclowski ever won pplus 1. AND you can throw Brad B from riverview in the mix too

  24. Touche, Sandersen won 11 out of 15 from '78 to '92. Which 7 were as an outright Class B? I always thought the Falcons were around 400-500 students and opted up a class even for thier 84 runner up and 91 title. The enrollement listed on michigan-football shows them with 750 in '85 and 450 in '88. Now I know they didnt lose 300 students in 3 years. SMA and MCC did not have 400 students each. Those enrollements show the 1.5 or whatever the multiplier is due to opting up.

  25. My bad, seven of those came while the Falcons were Class B while not opting up. Also, Sanderson didn't win seven straight league titles. He won five 78,79,80,81 and 82. Jefferson won in 83 then CC again in 84,and 85. Great coach though!

I guess if your going to be smarmy in your comments I'll be smarmy too.

  26. ya maybe its maddux I am thinking of.. whoever it was he was a dominating player that played DE for the Bears during their title run.

  27. Lets not forget that Weclowski achored a defense that only gave up 30 points a game. Something to be proud of for sure.

  28. ya Wecloski won 5 games as a varsity starter and and Pannone has won 22 allready with a year to go. Not much comparison between the two I agree.

  29. "Sanderson was a great coach and probably the leagues best but I would point out that 10 of his 14 titles came while the Falcons were Class B including his State Title."

    errrr so whats your point?

CC was a class C school who opted to play up a class which makes the playoff success even more amazing.

  30. Sanderson was a great coach and probably the leagues best but I would point out that 10 of his 14 titles came while the Falcons were Class B including his State Title.

  31. Pannone has so many tackles because he plays 16 frickin games, weclowski only played 9 games, you do the math!!! weclowski averaged 16 tackles a game was 1st team all state and defensive player of the year, you really think 5'8 pannone is better than weclowski, im sorry but you must be a big time pannone fan to say that,

  32. Anybody suggesting any other coach other than MCC/SMCC's Joe Sandersen is clueless. He won 14(11 outright) league titles in 24 years. Including 7 in a row! He also won a state title and a state runner up PLAYING UP A CLASS when there were only 4 state champions not 8.

Compare that to lets say Redmond(who coached under Sandersen at MCC) had 6 in 14 years with only 2 outright. 6 in 14 years is very good but he had to share 4 of them. Heck Giarmo has more outright titles then Redmond.

Just no comparing the 2 and I am sure Redmond would say the same. The old Sage Sandersen was one of a kind. "You go on the G of go"

    1. found this article researching my old dear coach Sandersen. Played for him for about 3 yrs. (Sophmore thru Senior years at CC). We won the state championship at the dome in 92 I believe it was. Anyway, the “you go on the G of go” brought back alot of memories from those years.

  33. Redmond is the best coach around… he completely turned around airports program… never had a winning season before he came… now airport made the playoffs 12 straight years…

as for best players.. there has been alot. wecklowski is not the best player of the era. TJ lovel didnt deserve POY. Neither did Wecklowski. Pannone from SMCC was the best defender in the league on the winning team he has two seasons over 150 tackles. do the math.. thats more than wecklowski…
so how can wecklowski be the best player of the era when he isnt the best player of this year?

  34. I normally don't post these types of post but since it is mostly directed at me I'll post it then respond.

My latest post was a question regarding the best coaches and or players since 1970 in the Huron League. I asked people to post who and why then I put down some names to think about.

What has happened since is a many people have listed a person and no reason why. Others have chose to rip on my suggestions.

The players and coaches I suggested were players who were either Players of the Year in some capacity, All State or went on to good solid college careers.

I will touch on a few examples. Dave Steffan from FR was Monroe County Offensive Player of the Year. His team won a State Championship and he was All state in 3 sports. Joe Rice from Huron was an All League player, State Champion heavyweight wrestler and a DII All-American at Saginaw Valley. Blake Smolen was a two way standout for GI and went on to an All-American career at Grand Valley State. Tyler Weclowski from Huron was Monroe County Defensive Player of the Year and was named All-State while averaging 16 tackles per game including a 28 tackle performance against Huron League Champ and State Runner-up SMCC.

I notice your post was at 1:18 in the morning. Perhaps you had a few pops in your system and you were doing the equivalent of drunk-dialing your wannabe girlfriend. I think everyone listed by me can be considered a worthy candidate.

  35. i think your name is chris right? your pretty much an idiot, wecloski may be good but forreal, put him on smcc, airport milan or jefferson and he has barely 90 tackles HES A GOOD PLAYER ON A REAL REAL SHITTY TEAM. the next person below him had like 30 tackles.. your straigh dumb for saying that

  36. As far as Tyler Weclowski goes… I dont know if he's the best defensive player to ever play in this league, but heres some thoughts..
He had 257 carrer tackles, Im not sure wut the most carrer for the league is?
He had 157 in one regular season, wuts the record? Also he played half those games with a cast.
He had 28 tackles in one game and an int.( against state finalist smcc) Wuts the recotrd?
He also had games of 24 tackles ( Riverview) and 21 tackles ( Milan). Most games of 20 plus tackles?
He was named the defensive player of the year.
He was 1st team all state and 1st team unanimus all conference.Im not sure if he's the best but those numbers deserveeeeeee some respect.

  37. Mike Flaherty was the OPOY and DPOY in 1993, according to the Monroe News website. Has anyone else been the player of the year on both sides in the same year?

    j.w.

  38. weclowski as the best player from our era now. he didnt even make HL POY.

lovell did and he didnt even deserve it.

there are better choices than him. not sayin he isnt good.

there is no way u can compare him to giarmo. i have talked to so many people who play with and against him.
heard stories of how the kid single handedly dominted the LOS and had so many TFL.

  39. Blake Smolen from Grosse Ile not only excelled in the Huron League, but also in college, where he was a two-time all american as well.

  40. How many 2 time 1st team ALL-State players have been in the Huron league. I think you have to start there. Paul Haddix of CC is one of them. Are there any others?

  41. Yeah, Anderson was a beast for Airport back in the early 00s. I mean heck between football and track the guy holds or is on relays with at least 7 or 8 records, 10 at the most. I'm pretty sure he was on varsity as a freshman too, he just wasn't mentally prepared for it, but physically he was.

Weclowski is being thrown into the mix because you need to throw in each decades of the best athletes. hence Ron Spears being in there too. All good athletes no doubt, but my vote is Anderson.

  42. Sandersen best coach and who was the DE for Jefferson when they when the state title? He gets my vote as best player.
