Rumor Mill

Thought I would throw something out that I heard at the RAC in Romulus last week. People were talking that the Huron League would be bringing in Romulus Summit Academy and that Milan would be leaving the league.

I had to laugh at this notion. I just can’t see Milan ever leaving the league. I can’t see the Huron League Superintendents ever allowing a school that poaches students from their districts participate in their league. Then I thought, well they already allow them in the middle school league maybe they will.

Summit Academy sits right in the middle of the Huron School District. The only reason Romulus is attached to the name is because the mailing address is Romulus for the school address and not New Boston. Summit grabs students from many of the league districts; Huron, Flat Rock, Riverview and Airport are among them. Throw in other districts such as Woodhaven, Romulus, Taylor, Southgate, Van Buren, Gibraltar, Inkster, Dearborn Heights, Detroit and you have everything that is wrong with high school sports these days.

Look at Summit’s football program. While not a powerhouse by any stretch, their head football coach is also the president of the Woodhaven Junior Football Program. How the Woodhaven district and it’s parents allow that is beyond me.

Their have been rumblings about recruiting in the Huron League every year, but for the most part the league is a nice friendly neighborhood school league. Allowing a school like Summit would certainly change that dynamic and the league would never be the same.

Schools like Trenton, Ida or Dundee would make more sense to one of the oldest leagues in the state. I hope the league doesn’t change at all. I like Milan in the league and if an opening ever does occur grab a legitimate neighborhood school.

  1. SMCC 31 Techumseh 21
    Ida 30 Jefferson 16
    Huron 44 Summit 6

Not sure who everyone else plays week 1.. any input and early predictions would be helpful

  2. So high school sports is just intended to pick on teams or compete and see if you are really any good. As Milan proves every year……you are as good as the competition you play!!!,!, real programs take challenges every week to be the best

  3. Kick Flat Rock out? never happen, why would anyone else in the league want the smallest school out? These teams are looking for wins to get in the playoffs, not to have a strong conference overall. Besides why would Milan (Distance) or SMCC (Parochial) or Riverview (Class A) ever want to set a precedent of the league being able to kick members out? Also GI and Jefferson are not much bigger than FR (within a hundred students), so with no FR they would not have someone to pick on.

  4. Yes Raise the bar of the huron league…kick FR out and invite Trenton in!! I don't see FR winning a game in the league for the next 3 years. They simply don't have the kids or program in place to compete.

  5. SMCC will have their hands full. Romano is a good coach and has brought Tecumseh back from the dead. He will have a good plan to prepare for the T.

  6. Kalby took on the most unenviable of tasks, that is, turning around the interest and popularity of Huron's football program <—-quite probably the worst program in the state of Michigan's history. He succeeded greatly, where no one else really could. The hard part is done.

Now, they need to find the guy who can coach em up and and get some wins.

The Riverview game of last year and the SMCC game of 2009 were prime examples of games Huron should have won… and when I say should, I mean the game was in the bag… over.. and to me, coaching let them down. There are a few others but those 2 stick out to me.

Those games were HUGE for the school. In 09 beating CC would have been a gigantic boost for the program and the over all welfare. The RIV game last year meant a trip to the playoffs.

In any event, Huron needs to find the next guy to come in and be a motivator but also be able to manage the game. I honestly believe if they get the right guy, Huron will be a real force in the league. They will be in the upper half every year at worst.

my 2 cents on a frustrating thing that is New Boston Huron Football.

  7. They have athletes all over that school. Their lower level teams have been doing fine. I would hire a guy with experience who can work in the building. Whether that can happen or not I have no idea.

  8. Chris,
When Kalby leaves, which I think is soon because you can't do both and be two places at once, hence the baseball job, they will need to bring in a coach with some HC experience and a job in the building? Are they will to create that? Huron will go in the tank if the right person isn't in the building. They don't exactly strike me as having great athletes coming up! Next year better be their year!!

  9. When schools like, Rockford, Mendon, Ithaca or EGR win multiple titles, not much is said about moving them to a separate playoff.

  10. I for one, love the idea of Trenton joining the huron league. I dont care if Milan stays or goes. SMCC stays because of history but really…Charter schools and public schools of choice should have one playoff, Catholic /private schools another. Traditional pubic schools a third. It is totally unfair for a school like Flat Rock or Grosse Ile to have to play a school like Detroit Country Day.

  11. First, with school of choice everyone is in a sense recruiting. A school shouldn't have to worry about maintaing or losing kids. If it's a good school with good academics and athletics then they'll stay. If not they'll leave. In the huron league there are many examples of this, kids crossing districts. If you really want to maintain or have a penalty, then make it a one year probation regardless if the parent moves or has a second address. A full year, not play another sport and it counts as probation. If your going to take other teams in the league they should extend to past members like Tecumseh, Dundee, Carlson, Dexter, who were part of the huron league at its infancy. Trenton has some history with the huron league as well consistently playing its members. If charter schools are the wave of the future then they should stay within their own league as they are now. Here's a better rumor, the summit schools organization was said to want a school in the south counties, which could affect monroe an lenawee county schools. Their school is a product and it's in demand because some schools are not providing for certain students, families want results and college scholarships or they want their kid to be a star at sports and hope for a scholarship. It's a business now folks. Thank NCLB and the invention do "choice" and voucher systems. This all came to light after inner city and poor economic are schools failed. This is bigger than sports but schools see the advantage of it for sports. Sports can bring students which brings funding. Parents see it as the best opportunity for the child.

  12. Is Huron hiring the guy from junior football league or going after that college coach??? What is the scoop

  13. Sgt h c @ riv works !! Especially if he gets riv JV offensive & defensive coordinators to move up to varsity.

  14. Didnt Riverview pick up a kid from Summit after last years game? These kids should not be allowed to move schools like that. But he will sit his one semester and be ready to go for football.

  15. When certain rural schools suddenly have athletes from Ypsi, AA, and other larger cities, and the athletic program soars, good for them. When that same district just happens to obtain these athletes, who otherwise were academically ineligible before, and you had put the word out that there that there are tutors available, (especially for athletes, hmm, hmm) then it's bad for everyone else.

  16. So Ed Phillips couldn't recruit kids to summit the way he does wood haven junior football. Best to stay in jr leagues where he can control the puppets

  17. I think the Huron job is one that a good coach would welcome having. Huron is on the up in football, imo

  18. Huron is gonna go in the tank here soon. That little league program is great but kalby won't be there much longer, hence he took the baseball job! Remember the grass isn't always greener..recruit all you want..how can you tell if a kid is going to be good in the 6th grade? I've seen many great 6th grade kids turn into average athletes, burn outs, or never play sports…send you kid where you want and let the chips fall

  19. I was referring to the Milan QB who transfered to NB Huron last year. They didn't seem to have too much of a problem taking a star athlete.

  20. I don't know if Milan has a lottery or not. Depends on the openings. If they have 12 spots in the junior class and 15 people apply for those spots you are required to do a public lottery.

  21. Huron Township offers a youth football league, your city doesn't. (why is that?) Huron allows your kids and others to play. You should be happy your kids get to play.

Huron doesn't accept many open enrollment kids and it is done by a lottery when there are openings. Does FR have open enrollment? You know the answer.

  22. All sorts of kids in youth league that are FR kids. Some friendly league you speak of when you go after your next door neighbor!

Youth sports have spiraled out of control

  23. You speak of Milan recruiting but what about huron? They are doing the same thing. Close this school of choice crap and if you want to go there then move!!!!!!

  24. If you could get Trenton that would be great! I'd trade them off for Milan in a heart beat. To my mind they have comparable athletics to Milan. But I don't think they'd ever leave the DRL. Especially for Football where they're the "small" school and they benefit from the added point collections of playing the bigger schools. Kinda like SMCC or FR in the Huron League.

And if you could get them, take AP in trade for Airport. Again more logistically compatible with similar quality athletic programs.

  25. Well I for one would hate to see Milan leave because of the quality of their competition in their athletic program. However, I always HATE the drive there. Airport too. It's a frickin' hike that you need to pack a lunch for.

I also wouldn't want to see Ida, Dundee, Blissfield or Erie Mason for the same logistical reasons.

  26. To answer some questions from a previous thread…

I have the SMCC 2006 team as low as they are because they exited to the worst team.

The top 3 teams on my list can be in any order. The 2004-2005-2010 teams were all excellent. You can make a case for all of them being Jack's best.

EM, I wouldnt say they lost on a "controversial" play but it was a one in a million type scenario. Or in SMCC's case 3 in a million if you take into account how they lost to Blissfield is 07 and C-vill last year.

  27. I must have missed that press conference and I'm pretty sure I never mentioned that name. So did Summit run another coach off? One big coaching carousel over there on Middlebelt road.

  28. this Is going to happen the the new playoff format takes over, if it ever does!! will allow for some other schools to make the playoffs!

  29. They should tier the league into a 2 tier system.
    Milan
    Riverview
    Huron
    GI
    SMCC
    Airport
    Trenton

    Ida
    FR
    Dundee
    Blissfield or Carlson
    Erie Mason
    Jefferson

  30. Summit is currently looking for a HC. I hope the Huron League would never want them in. Would not be good. Trenton or Ida would be a better fit athletically.
