Early Season Picks

Just thought I would throw some thoughts out there on how the teams might do this season. Still have research to do on every team, but this should give people something to chew on.

Airport (3-6) Non-league schedule keeps Jets from winning record.

Flat Rock (1-8) The Rams will find a way to win a game this season.

Grosse Ile (8-1) Islanders need to avoid the injury bug this season.

Huron (5-4) Chiefs must find a way to split the first four games.

Jefferson (3-6) Bears are getting better

Milan (6-3) Big Reds must beat Marshall in the season opener.

Riverview (5-4) Too many great players to replace this season.

SMCC (8-1) Falcons appear poised for a league title and long playoff run.

  1. SMCC baseball ended June 7th. The summer travel team with SMCC kids on it didn't start till July. I can see this is a no win situation. I will find flaws in your comments and you will find flaws in mine. whatever. Just browsing blog trying to bring peoples head down to size. Always the worst at CC. We will see how season goes.
    By the way my kid

  2. "Football wise, Jones, Antonelli, O lear, O lear, Fleck, Bitz, Czarnowski, Castiglione, Couturier, Couturier, and Corbin are gone. That's 11. Just to name a few. Quit arguing about this, its a down year, you have lost some great players, deal with it. We all have cycles, just have to admit it.
Have a nice day guys !"

Jones was the kicker, Antonelli hurt all year, one couturier was out 6 games. CZ, Cas and Fleck will be missed.. Corbin as well. Thats why i said 5-6. The others have excellent replacements. I wonder who your team is, lets see how they fair against a so called down year Falcon team.

  3. Basketball all of June. They didn't get done with high school baseball until June 14th and had baskeball until June 27th. And the coach never demands them to miss baseball. Even though my son plays baseball and it's basically a jv summer league. He is going to try out for basketball and was never once told he had to attend. You think coaches coach harder when they don't have the talent. Just know your facts on these before spouting off. Football, I don't have a horse in that race so don't know about that

  4. Just what I expected. No sweat. Every year its lost 3 or 4 kids and returning 16. right. The records will tell. 10:44 you proved my point. Baseball lost all its starters but 1. Same situation in the other sports. Wow! Why are you all so afraid to admit this. Basketball the same, that's why next years varsity played summer basketball all of June and didn't allow any of the baseball players to play until July. Never done that before. Should I keep going.

  5. FR went 5-4 in 2007. The last time before that was in 1990. There are many things that have contributed to the Rams demise in football. It ranges from low turnout, administration apathy, poor coaching hires, no weight program, parent interference, limited talent pay to play, and some bad luck. Plus, there are no gimmees in football anymore. Huron used to be a win every year while Airport was beatable until 1998.

Tom Oestrike was a good hire. He is doing everything right. A weight program is in place. The players like him. Administration has become supportive. and interest is starting to creep back. Losing a lot of games doesn't help at all, but despite the record last year and probably this year, the program is headed in the right direction.

  6. In the last 10 seasons how many times was SMCC supposed to admit they were down? 1?

again… the 4:57 poster has no idea what he is talking about.

Relax there Lee Corso, almost all predictions are wrong every year on here, just adding to the pile. The order may change, but nobody will be 8-1. And yes, SMCC is down from last year. I have been on this blog since it started, there has never been a year or a time when SMCC admits a down season. Talent is down, this senior class is not the talent of last years class. Sorry its the truth. I know the kids. Watch in basketball and baseball too"

Officially NO CLUE. SMCC is MUCH better than last year. They lost 5-6 good players from last years team… thats including the twins. How many other teams can boast that. Yes I agree that Huron GI and SMCC are better than last year. Milan we will see about. I would venture to say that every team in the league will be better minus View and Milan.

  8. Don't think CC is down by any means. However, the senior class they had last year it was exceptional. Watched a few of them in the All-Star game. Some very good players….

As for Jefferson been great. Work on a winning record before trying to take the league.

  9. I'm a 1995 Flat Rock graduate. Played football, basketball and ran track. I've moved out of state after graduating college in 1999, however, have always followed FR as well as the Huron League. Why is the Flat Rock football program absolutely awful year in & year out? We've had competitive boys basketball and baseball teams fairly consistently, however, the football program has been miserably bad for decades. There are enough talented kids at the school to not be the annual doormats which they've become. Don't get me wrong, by no means am I saying league championship talent, however, talented enough to at least hover around the .500 mark. With a little luck potentially sneak into a playoff spot with 6 wins. I don't believe we've had a winning record since 1990. Which was also the last time we qualified for the post season. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Perplexed alumni in Texas.

  10. Cc is not down from last year they should be much better than last year. How is this senior class not as good as last years?

    1. There are two football players that are basketball players (windham and vuich), and windham was the only non senior to start for the baseball team last spring. You obviously don't know the kids. They return 15 of 22 starters from last year. If that is down I'd hate to see what up is.

The league will be very tight this year. The top 3 are down from last year. They all lost significant players. Several teams will have a couple losses, tired of all teams being put on pedestal based on last year.

Good coaching or not, you still have to have the talent, talent is down in the teams that were at the top last year.

    Milan 7-2
    GI 7-2
    SMCC 6-3
    Jefferson 6-3
    Airport 5-4
    View 5-4
    Huron 3-6
    Flat Rock 2-7

Maybe the most uninformed post of all time.

    1. Jefferson will have winning record the offensive side of ball will be exciting. Defense will be strong. If a few breaks go there way can take league.

  14. When I was in 8th grade the middle school team and the little league varsity teams both went undefeated, by the time that we were seniors there were only 10 of us left playing. We only won 2 games.

    1. They have a great QB. He will get the job done. My son missed 2 practices for personal reasons. They will make the play offs. They are only 27 strong but will surprise everyone again. Good luck to all the teams and kids. I know how hard every school works to win.

  15. Not sure why people are underestimating Riverview. Both their JV and middle school squads went undefeated last year. Lots of new talent ready and willing to step up. Go Pirates!

  16. What a bunch of losers talking about a 15 year old kid. I read this website to learn about Huron league football, not to trash high school kids. What a joke…

    1. I don't see anyone saying anything negative about him. He is a gifted athlete and even though my kids go to a different school, I hope he plays. Football is a great game that teaches a lot about life and working as a team. I've coached and become friends with people that I played against. I wish that experience to all the kids.

  17. and Chris… NO WAY does Huron go 3-4 in the league. NO WAY!!

Huron has a chance to run it, I see 7-2 for sure.

  18. On his twitter account he responds to a Cascade HS player who informed him of a 530 practice time with "I'll be there"

Hearing many different stories.. I guess we will know wk 1.

    1. He visited TN and went to visit his friends and coaches on the team there. As of now he is playing, hopefully for the Big Reds that won't change!

    2. His old school had a scrimmage game that night at 5:30. He was ask to come and he told his life long buddy since kindergarten he would be there. I went with him. Trace is a Big Red.

  19. I think the real question we all want to know, Chris, is how will the Milan film team be affected by the addition of Cole Dennison? He's a bit raw, but he has a steady hand on the camera. Any analysis?

  20. Right now I see two losses in the non-league for Airport. I have them going 3-4 in the league. Last season they were 3-6, but were fortunate enough to play Grosse Ile after Mitroka went down. They have what I would call four 50/50 games (Jefferson, Huron, Riverview and Milan). I have them winning two and losing two. They need to be a little better defensively and much better offensively to right the ship this season. In my opinion, coaching is a non-issue.

  21. Milan can win the league again as there are no true power teams. However, as a Milan fan, going far will be tough. Not enough depth.

    1. Why am I crazy 11:17 ? I'm just stating my opinion. This time last everyone said the same crap that Milan couldn't repeat. They did. I think the offense will be more effective than last year. The defense is where they will lose if they lose at all. They can and will score points. The question is can the defense hold. And they will most likely have the "bend but don't break" mentality. Just my opinion. Not crazy at all.

  22. I think Milan goes 8-1. Maybe 7-2 at worse. I believe they beat GI. It's at home this year and should play in their favor. The only other lose would be to DCD at the end. Anything is possible though. SMCC has the best chance to beat Milan. They played tough last year and that should play out to be a awesome game. Winning the league is a toss up between those 3. Excited for this year. Milan could be the team to go further than ever before. Running game is going to be tough to stop.
