Huron League Thoughts and Questions

That sure was some crazy weather Friday night.

Probably a smart move calling the SMCC/Flat Rock game at half.

I guess Milan’s league winning streak couldn’t go on forever.

Will Airport’s Dylan Meiring hold up if he continues to average 37 carries per game?

Riverview looks like they are a pretty solid team.

Did anyone expect Huron to pitch a shutout and force a running clock on Grosse Ile?

I think Jefferson has thrown the ball more in two games than Cisco did during the decade of the 90’s.

Impressive 2-0 start for Airport.

Game of the week? SMCC/Huron or Airport/Riverview?

Coldwater rolled Milan’s week one opponent Marshall 42-0.

Could be a long season for Grosse Ile if Mitroka isn’t healthy.

Is SMCC’s Travis Vuich the X-Factor for the Falcons this season?

Who was better at LB Friday/Saturday? Riverview’s Tyler Chase or Milan’s Cortez Gray?

Looks like Flat Rock might have an opportunity to get a win Friday.

  1. GI has a lot of talented kids with or without Mitroka. Best combination they have had in years. If this team doesnt rally and go far this season its not a player problem. Its a Bodner problem. He treats his players like trash.

  2. This is hilarious. Lots of comments. Randy Clark, whoever you are, your a riot. Keep stirring the pot. CC fans were quiet for awhile till you showed up.

These comparisons are a bit much. Every team is different every year. This years Tecumseh team is no where near as good as last year. Could go on and on.

See what happens on the field tonite. Should be some great games.

  3. Just a thought… Chris & Bloggers, do you think that Milan's decision NOT to have a JV squad 2 years ago, might be a contributor to their situation this year??? Just a thought to ponder. They still have a one of the best coaches and amazing talent. BUT, we all knew there would be some kind of impact, but, when was the question. Things that make you go hmmmm?

  4. I think we should let the kid play a few more Huron League games before we call him the "Best the league has seen in years"

  5. Like I said nobody thought Milan would win the league this year.. nobody with a brain anyway. CC and GI were the favorites. Huron and Milan would be next.

The way it has played out Milan is terrible and Huron is really good.

Riverview and Airport has impressed as well.

NOBODY THOUGHT MILAN WOULD WIN THE LEAGUE BUT MILAN FANS

They will finish 6th behind Jefferson and Flat rock.

just take your dose of reality.

    1. You don't come to the blog much do you? After Milan pounded the league 2 years in a row, it was greatly expected for a 3peat. Just because you're misinformed or uneducated or new, doesn't mean no one thought it impossible. Chris if I remember correctly picked against Milan last year a couple times and they came out winning the league. He picked CC goin 8-1 and Milan going 7-2 this year. Not too many disagreeing with the possibility. Only reason he didn't put Milan as the league winner is because he sees a state champion team in CC otherwise I'm sure he would've picked Milan. So insert foot and become educated.

  6. Same thing with Milan. Everyone was saying they were going to win the league. They lose to the view and all of a sudden they aren't that good of a team anymore.

  7. Ya I know and I myself have been guilty of putting Huron on a pedestal in hopes it hypes them up and have also been bitten before. I just find it funny people are quick to knock a team down after they just won against a team ALL said would be a top contender and now suddenly "GI isn't very good at all" it's like it would literally knock someone dead to say "Huron is actually looking good this year." Just mind blowing lol

  8. I think some people pick one post and reply to it as if its how everyone thinks.

KC, there is often some hijinx that goes on, on this blog in an attempt to get their own team fired up.

I may even be guilty myself once or twice.

  9. I find it funny that the same people that just beat Tecumseh are the same people that are praising Tecumseh at how they're coached with skill… If they're so skilled and talented then why didn't they beat you? Oh that's right. They're skilled now since we're comparing them to Huron. Well let's compare. Tecumseh in recent years had back to back 2-7 years and back to back 1-8 years since 2006. Huron hasn't had a 2-7 team since 2006. And has sense gone 5-4, 4-5, or better. Now correct me if I'm wrong but that's about the same time Kalby really started turning the program around and put a flame under his players to do better and succeed. The numbers show they're no more skilled than Huron. So let's not compared apples to oranges here. If Kalby is righting his play books in crayons then hey, let him. Why? Because it's working. AND the records speak for themselves since he got into the head coach position.

As for the CC jock jumpers… One thing you'll never know is pride. Anyone can sit and hoot and holler when their team is at the top but I'd like to see you same bandwagoners when CC starts crapping the bed and isn't the top dog anymore. Then it'll be excuse after excuse. Suck it up and praise the fact that Huron isn't a bottom feeder of the league anymore and be scared that they are getting better and will within years, be contending for the league title. Til then, continue to bring up last year's game of the last 27 years for that matter. They're not the same team they were 27 years ago. Get out of the past.

    1. So you use the word "praise." What exactly have they done to earn praise? like it or not GI isn't one of the top 4 teams in the league. I'm not saying it wasn't impressive how you beat GI with the running clock, I'm only saying you haven't won anything yet. If you go out and beat Riverview, Milan and CC or 2 of 3, you'll get your "praise." You can run your mouth about pride all you want. Anyone, anywhere that plays HS football has pride. One thing that you don't understand is respect. Respect is EARNED, not just given. When you earn it as a program, you'll get it. Until then bite your tongue, get to work, and you'll get what you deserve, good or bad. I hope you understand the bombs that'll be dropped on this blog this weekend if your mighty Cheifs don't show up Friday night.

  10. That is garbage. There weren't four penalities that resulted in TD's taken back. Mitroka ran for a TD and a flag was thrown by the referee early. Film shows the kid tackling a defender. The other so called TD was a pass that the official called out of bounds. Nobody had a better look than the official. He was right there. Perhaps one of the biggest missed calls was a linebacker for Grosse Ile ripping the helmet right off of a Huron players head late in the fourth quarter. Who was the player ejected in the 3rd quarter for Grosse Ile?

  11. Just mentioning.. There were 4 phantom calls. Those calls resulted in 4 GI touchdowns being taken back. At absolutely critical points. I'm not making excuses. Just don't count those islanders out. Those boys can play.

  12. No the great news about Mitroka would mean that he does not have a SERIOUS injury that needs surgery or anything of the sort. I would be surprised if he played against FR. maybe just a quarter or so if that.

  13. Your right about Jefferson throwing more than with Cisco. Their passing game is good good Qb good receivers .pass blocking been OK .run blocking can improve .defense is a work in progress .

  14. and smcc does this against bigger teams almost every single week every single year. even this year cc is probably behind Tecumseh, huron, airport and riverview in size. heck even flat rock had 3 kids big as heck.

  15. Football is about blocking and tackling… SMCC has done it better than everyone over the years. They were good before the T lets not forget.. very good to be exact.

The spread read option that everyone runs, hides the ball as well.

If you can keep track of the football vs smcc its because you haven't done your homework.

  16. According to Mitroka he is playing Friday. Not sure why they'd risk further injury to him against FR, but his twitter says he got great news. To me that means he's playing.

  17. FR WILL NOT WIN A LEAGUE GAME!! Are you drinking? COME ON..THEY ARE AWFUL.GR was AWFUL..lets be real..watch them on film against CC they are SOFT..GI will ROLL..TRUST ME..The GI boys will be ready to roll..

  18. listen GI can have bonder play QB they will beat FR. FR isn't at that level and won't move the ball. Remember GI still has a good D, Huron scored on big plays. FR won't win. I see it GI 21 FR 6

  19. Jefferson continues with the passing their showing with receivers and qb they have will be difficult to stop they can only stop themselves .only thing Milan and rest of league can hope for is go baxkbro offense Cisco had

  20. Defend them correctly by tackling each and every back instead of allowing that throwback offense to run the field and they could be held to 7. I laugh every time I watch that junk and it saddens me that they have the success they do with it. However, the kids ARE well coached and they do what they are taught, which allows the hidden ball deception to work. I keep waiting to see when they are going to break out the leather helmets to complete the antiquated package deal.

  21. Got to jump in on the Huron v CC predictors: Has anyone EVER held the CC offense to 7 points ??? If Huron does, their the real deal.

    Riverview Fan

  22. It's not that Cortez Gray is getting double teamed, it's the fact that the DTs in front of him aren't clogging things up and allowing him to flow to the ball. When Cortez is freed up, he's making plays, when blockers and blocking backs are getting to the second level, he's not big enough to shed them every time. He really has a nose for the ball, though, and so far he's good for a few big pops each game.

Hopefully, the DL will improve throughout the year and allow #8 to make plays. Football is the ultimate team game, and just as the OL needs to block for the running backs, the DL needs to keep the LBs freed up to stop the ball.

  23. The people who said that they were more talented are not very smart. This years group is talented, but very very young.

    Milan Fan

  24. Randy Clark, you shouldn't just post your prediction "31-7 Huron" over and over without some constructive reasoning…at least.

I don't see SMCC losing this game at all. They soundly beat a very well coached Tecumseh squad. I think Tecumseh had a size similar to that of what Huron has to offer the Falcons.

Giarmo will make sure to prepare the players, keeping their heads in check and making sure they know that this Huron squad is not something to mess around with.

I don't think it will be a blowout, but SMCC is on a different level. 27 game streak will be extended into 28.

    35-14 SMCC

    1. I appreciate the fact that you have the guts to leave your name. However, you're name is Randy Clark. And "Randy Clark" means nothing to anyone on this blog because we've never heard of you. If we've never heard of you it means your HL football ability and or knowledge is suspect. Please let us fellow bloggers know the cridentials of your football expertise. On second thought, nevermind.

      CC 54 Huron 7

    2. Easy there Randy, the guy I'm talking about has a state title and numerous playoff wins. The guy you're talking about has had one good year ever! Now with that said, he's better than your coach, but then again, that's not saying much.

      -UDub

    3. 10 years playing football 21 coaching enough credentials? N 4 person crying about last weeks lost to huron . There was one td called back on each team . Penalties did not hinder gi that much at all just saying should not have been mentioned . And also I won't blow up score like bum just because . Immature, huron 31 Mary's 7

  25. I agree Lenawee coach-so much talk about Cortez and Chase. Good players but not the cream of the league. I also saw the Riverview/Milan game and just didn't see these two stand out on either side of the ball.

  26. I enjoy this blog and have coached in Lenawee County high school football for 17years. I was at the Milan/Riverview game. There must be some family members really talking up their kids on here. I didn't think any of these LB's were anything super special. I also laugh about the comment that the one LB was getting double teamed every play so wasn't making tackles-the Huron League is a power conference, LB's getting double teamed is the norm just about every run play. Get used to it.

  27. Wouldn't be giving SMCC any amo running your mouth. They beat a very good and well coached Tecumseh team. Huron hasn't proved anything yet. First good win in three years. And no one knows how good GI really is with the QB recovering from last year. Beat SMCC and you might be a good football team.

  28. Don't count Milan out just yet. They played very poorly Turning the ball over and tons of penalties. There D played very well against a strong running attack. River view scored a TD with under a minute left when the game was over but the D didn't give up much. The interception for a TD was just plain bad and a mix up by the qb. If you saw the game Milan drove up and down the field in the second half, but turnovers and penalties killed their drives. They are just young and inexperienced. Better learn quick or it will be a long year.

    1. Everyone said this Milan team was more talented then the last year's Team not even close if they don't win Friday those Lincoln kids might go back

  29. Both of those kids are monsters coming from someone who watched the game. The Chase kid is more of a 3 technique at the next level. Absolute awesome football player. I see the Milan kid as a legitimate Mac type player being only a junior. Both were fun to watch.

  30. Cortez is the fastest linebacker the league has seen in a long time. Chase is a solid brick. Different, but both good. Milan, please don't tell me they are double teaming a Mike linebacker, you are exposing your ignorance.

  31. Milan will be fine. They just have to grow up fast. They are starting 19 of 22 underclassman at the starting positions. Losing Duffany with the torn acl really hurts them as 1 of only 7 seniors and a two way and three year starter.

No excuses for the loss as turnovers and penalties will kill any team, let alone a young team. Hoskins will get them on the right track.

    Milan Fan

  32. Huron show give smcc a good game but will come up short. They are building but not ready to go over the hill yet. Winning some games the last few years has certainly helped to bring the program along. Their coach has nice a very nice job there. If they can continue to win it will along with their coach bring Huron to new heights that they really never had. Good luck to the Chiefs the rest of the way. Good luck to all the teams in the league hope they enjoy success.

  33. GI hasn't ever really been a solid team a whole year. With out there QB there not good. Look who GI lost to last year so how do you call them good so ya Huron hasn't played a solid team yet.

  34. Huron will beat SMCC
    The View will beat Airport.

Said it all along. Check blog history. Certain teams have become tired of losing and have turned it up a notch. Every school has cycles. Milan good last 2 years, now its Huron and Riverviews turn. Hopefully a few new in upcoming years. I like parity. sick of SOS.

  35. I was thinking the same bn. I know it's early but this game could go a long way in determining Airport's playoff chances. EM

  36. Chiefs are heads and shoulders better than the falcons. D3 vs D6. Huron is the real deal this year. CC wont be able to stop the running QB. It kills them every year.

Im going with Chiefs 35 Falcons 21

  37. Airports defense the self proclaimed "dark side" will have a big match up against riverview. The d line will be tested

  38. Great question : Chase vs Cortez at LB last weekend. Both very good at their positions. Cortez was impressive in 1st qtr. but Riv shut him down the next three……Chase consistant the entire game. Riv's two interceptions (Gubbini and Glime) were impressive !

    1. Chase was the main factor in this game. Just my opinion. The interceptions were not great at all. Milan's QB just missed all out. Even though we lost, I still don't see Riverview winning the league. Milan did nothing to help their cause. Riverview did everything right. I still say SMCC is the team to beat. I thought GI would compeat but with out the QB how good are they? Who knows, we might have 3 or 4 teams with a loss. Maybe no one runs the table this year.

    2. Chase and Cortez both the top of the league at the linebacker position, but Chase was more consistent and without the personal fouls. Chase also won the match up of Fullback vs linebacker, by consistently pounding Cortez. Again, frustrating Cortez and drawing a push in the back..to which chase responded by simply running back to the huddle
