Huron @ Carlson 7 pm

Huron (5-4) will make their way over to Gibraltar to battle Carlson (8-1) on Friday night. First year coach Tim Spiess guided Huron to a 4th place tie in the Huron League while Carlson finished in 2nd place in the Downriver League in Jack Giarmo’s 1st season. These two schools have not met on the gridiron since 1992 when Carlson still played in the Huron League. Carlson leads the all-time series 22-6.

The offense for the Chiefs has struggled at times this year. Huron is led by their two senior RB’s Reed Smith and Cameron Hitchen. Senior QB, Marek Spiess will look to get the ball to his brother Brennan Spiess and Brett McKay when going to the air. The defense has been the bright spot for Huron this year. Senior LB Mike Mitchell has been a steady force for two seasons for the Chiefs along with senior LB Drake Pauwels and senior DE Jared Kozlowski. Junior Brent Wright and senior Phil Martin hold down the safety spots.

Carlson has loads of talent and is led by senior QB/SS and University of Wisconsin commit Jaylan Franklin. Look for the combination of Brandon Stewart, Malik Ford, Steph Sanders and Jacob Shoemaker get the bulk of the carries for the Marauders. Ian Stewart is an athletic TE who is a big deep ball threat. The OL in anchored by Jacob Browne. On defense, Carlson is led by one of the best LB’s in the area in Jacob Simons. Seniors Tyler Koons and Rommel Duran are solid players on defense.

The key to this game will be Carlson’s explosive offense against Huron’s solid defense. If Carlson can get to 28 points or more, the Marauders should win. It will be interesting to see how Huron and Carlson match up speed wise on the new turf at Carlson. Another key to look at is the depth. Both teams have a tendency to play a lot of seniors.
