Frank’s Best Games of 2018

For football fans in Monroe County, there’s no shortage of
good games to pick from this season. I decided to go through the schedule to
pick out the best games of the week for fans to attend. As an added bonus, I
also threw in a potential upset alert for each week.
DISCLAIMER: Just because I consider a game as an upset alert
does not mean that I’m leaning a certain way in picking that game
.
Without Further Ado…
Week 1:
Monroe at Airport (Aug 23). Two teams looking to get over
the hump in their respective conferences. The Jets are looking to keep the
turnaround under Jim Duffy going in Year 2, while the Trojans look to bounce
back from a 4-5 year. This is also the first time Monroe faces a team from
Monroe County, outside of Bedford, for the first time since 1932.
Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy at SMCC (Aug 23). Adam
Kipf’s squad is looking to build off of a surprise run to the Regional round
last season, as a boatload of talent returns. The Falcons will get a good test
from the Eagles, who have been a perennial playoff qualifier in Division 4.
Blissfield at Whiteford (Aug 24). The road to a second state
championship for the Bobcats begins with a visit from the Royals, who appear to
be back on the map after a trip to the Regional round last season.
UPSET ALERT: Grosse Ile over Riverview Gabriel Richard
Week 2:
Lake Fenton at Ida (Aug 30). The Blue Streaks face their
first huge test at home against the Blue Devils, who have put together playoff
appearances in Division 4 in four of the last five years.
Flat Rock at Riverview (Aug 30). The Pirates will be looking
to avenge their lone regular season loss from last season, which was to the
Rams.
UPSET ALERT: Jefferson over Huron
Week 3:
SMCC at Riverview. The game of the year in the Huron League.
The winner will be in the catbird’s seat for the conference title.
Whiteford at Summerfield. Throw the records out when the
Cats and Dawgs get together. After a 54-6 win by Whiteford in the regular
season, Summerfield gave them a fight in the playoffs, as the Bobcats won
36-20.
Carlson at Dearborn Edsel Ford. The Marauders’ first road
test takes them to the newest members of the Downriver League.
UPSET ALERT: Pinckney over Bedford
Week 4
Dundee at Ida. The Backyard Brawl has had fuel added to the
fire with a certain alumnus of Ida now at Dundee. The Vikings will be looking
for their first win in the series since 2012.
UPSET ALERT: Britton-Deerfield over Summerfield
Week 5:
Milan at Jefferson. The Bears had plenty of close losses
last season, with one being an 8-6 defeat at Milan. Will the Bears be able to
avenge last year?
UPSET ALERT: Erie Mason over Ida
Week 6:
Monroe at Bedford. If this is the year the Trojans get over
the hump in the SEC Red, they will have to survive a trip to Temperance, which
is a hostile environment anytime a big rival comes to town.
Ida at Hudson. This has become a new rivalry in the last
five years, as the Tigers and Blue Streaks have waged some good battles on the
gridiron.
UPSET ALERT: Allen Park over Carlson
Week 7:
SMCC at Airport. The end of a tough five-game stretch for
the Falcons takes them to Carleton to face a Jets team that some believe is a
sleeper in the Huron League.
Flat Rock at Jefferson. After dropping a heartbreaker in
overtime last season, the Bears will be looking for revenge at the friendly
confines of Marc Cisco Field.
UPSET ALERT: Sand Creek over Whiteford.
Week 8:
Carlson at Wyandotte Roosevelt. A rematch of what was the de
facto Downriver League Championship Game last season. Will the stakes be as
high this time around?
Monroe at Saline. If the Trojans get through the first seven
weeks unscathed, a showdown in Saline awaits with the reigning SEC-Red champs.
Erie Mason at Dundee. There were plenty of feathers ruffled
(pun not intended) in the last meeting, which Dundee won 72-36. Tensions could
be high in this one.
UPSET ALERT: Grosse Ile over Riverview

Week 9:
Summerfield at Morenci. Besides being Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs,
both teams met at the end of the season and at the start of the playoffs. It
was Summerfield who got the last laugh. Will Morenci get revenge, and will this
be a potential preview of a playoff matchup?
Ida at Blissfield. Could this be a potential
playoff-eliminator game? Both teams face tough schedules, and have expectations
of contending for the LCAA.
UPSET ALERT: Milan over Ypsilanti Lincoln

  1. How soon do some of you forget that I graduated from Ida in 2007 (100th graduation class at Ida, the greatest ever). And I took a gig at Dundee because they offered me a chance to put my God-given talents to use
