Junior Running Backs

This year in the Huron League it looks as if some teams will rely on some junior running backs to lead the way. I will focus on four of them today and all saw significant playing time on the varsity last year.

Leo Pittman, Milan

Pittman is looking like he could be the next great back that Steve Robb has produced at Milan. While the Big Reds have some major holes to fill Pittman will give them a back with both size and speed who will be durable enough to handle a boat load of carries. If Pittman can use his speed to score touchdowns Milan will once again finish in the upper echelon of the league.

Jodeci Mays, Airport

Mays is a smaller back with excellent speed that ran for almost 600 yards last season. Look for him to team up with QB Daniel Jones to provide a potent offensive attack for the Jets once again this season. Mays may not be durable enough to carry the ball 20 times a game but expect him to go over the 1,000 yard mark this season.

Bryan McCullough, Jefferson

This hard running bruiser reminds many of Bear legend Adam Servey. He averaged a workman like 3.6 yards per carry last year. He only carried the ball 79 times but look for that number to triple this year. Look for the Bears to use him to wear down the opponents defense. If Marc Cisco uses Mike Oley to throw the ball down field a bit this year McCullough could find himself doubling that yard per carry number.

Sterling Wilson, Huron

Wilson was the Chiefs leading rusher last year as a sophomore with 345 yards. Look for him to share the ball carrying duties this year with Tyler Weclowski who carried the ball a majority of the time late in the season. Wilson has blazing football speed but durability may be a problem as he likes to hit on the defensive side of the ball from his corner position.

Those four running backs should provide some excitement this fall with even more expected from them down the road as seniors.
