Best Sports Movie of All Time

We are now in the dog days of Winter and quite frankly I have nothing to write about. I am speechless, I am without speech!

Someone suggested the best sports movies of all time as a topic and that sounds good to me.

Please make your nominations and why. I will make sure everything gets posted then I will do a fan poll once we have the strongest nominees and let the readership decide.

My vote would be Slapshot. I spent many of my college days watching or reciting that movie word for word. It is definetely not a family movie but is hilarious and a must see for every fan who loves sports and comedy.

  1. I'd have to disagree with anyone throwing $150,000 to any program other than football, including volleyball or baseball. Coaches of both of those sports have already been told they will have to fund freshman sports themselves if they plan on keeping those teams alive. The cost of that is tiny compared to the lights.

  2. airport has always been a vollyball and baseball school. its a wonder redmond could do anything there, another reason he was such a good coach and person, he had to battle for everything he needed. if these light were on the baseball field it would have been fixed and replaced the next day. if the vollyball team needed a $150,000.00 air pump for the vollyballs, it would be done. airports football program might be in trouble, whoever they hire has to stand up to the bullcrap and keep whats left of the program alive.

  3. The school didn't pitch in any money for the baseball field. The field is the way it is because of the baseball program's dedication and hard work.

  4. Hey Rusty –

Try hitting up Guardian Glass or Waste Management. Sorry Pal – all other districts are being faced with budget shortages, etc. and don't forget you are living in the very same "Southeast Michigan" economy that Riverview, Jefferson, SMCC, Milan, Ida, Flat Rock, Huron and GI are – we are ALL cash strapped -looks as if Airport should have done a bit of maintenance, etc. prior to the lights becoming unsafe – could have used a few less "extras" on your baseball complex.

  5. Yo Rusty, even though Im a graduated airport player, Ive lost interest in the program. Im a big coach Redmond and Reed lover so im basically going to follow Monroe football instead of Airport football.

  6. here u go…

Without question the best overall sports movie is Hoosiers. Tells a great story of the underdog. And how any team can compete against the anyone with heart, will, desire and discipline

  7. Whoa there Rusty… Easy on the guilt trip attempts that make you and the Airport School District look very feeble.

I live in the District and played at Airport and have zero interest in donating money to the school for FOOTBALL lights.

  8. I know no everyone on this blog is an Airport fan. However, the actions that are happening at Airport effect the entire Huron League. As some of you may or may not know Airport is currently in a fundraising effort to erect lights by the start of the 2010 season. It will take $150,000 in order to complete. While you make think this effects Airport, this effects every team, as freshman and JV teams would have to play a weird schedule without lights, varsity teams visiting Airport would play on Saturday afternoons, and this just isn't right. So if anyone has extra money they can afford, please donate to Airport. The facebook group is "Airport's Friday Night Lights Rescue" and there is a link to paypal. Also checks sent to the school are fine. Again, this effects the whole Huron League, so please donate if able.

If you choose, this is the paypal link:

  9. Its Brian Shute…. Like my avatar. 😀

And yes the movie was about Louden, but we all know who would have won the State Title, and it was not Louden!

Might as well call Shute a 4x Champ….

  10. I guess I will throw out a few more.

The Legend of Baggar Vance (golf), Coach Carter (basketball), All the Right Moves (Football), Rocky (boxing), The Natural (baseball), Chariots of Fire (Olympics), Fire on the Track (running), and Victroy (soccer)

  11. I have to agree with you Chris, although there are so many good sports movies everytime I watch Slapshot I laugh myself into stitches.

  12. Have to be Vision Quest! Classic coming of age movie with terrific training scenes and 80s music montage's.

After Vision Quest you have to give some love to:

Remember the Titans, Caddy Shack, Rudy, Major League….

Wow tough to make a good list without missing a bunch.

  13. Best Movies by Sport:

    Hockey – Youngblood
    Basketball – Hoosiers
    Baseball – Bull Durham
    Football – Varsity Blues

    Too Hard to choose one!!

  14. Great minds think a like. On the hockey teams I play on we are always using lines from Slap Shot. We have a guy name Dave and we say Dave's a Killer. Or putting on the foil for when they put the tin foil on their hands. So many other lines but not enough time.

  15. Longest Yard for pretty much your same reasons as Slapshot. Now with Adam Sandler's remake my son enjoys the remake and also the original. Makings for great memories/family traditions for movie night.
