  1. Post on September 12th at 8:40 a.m., you have the silliest post I have EVER read on this blog. So you are telling me that you have watched every single Huron League team play this year? Have you even watched Riverview play this year? Worst team in years for the view? Do you remember the 08 season when they went 1-8 with Gross as their coach? No probably not because you are probably in high school or just graduated high school. You have not watched the league for years and if you have you don't do too great of a job. Yes, the league may be down this year but Huron is a hell of a lot better this year than they were 10 years ago. It is people like you that give me a big laugh and prove that some people who post comments on here have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

  2. Everyone thinks the league is down because SMCC is 1-2. I would have to say the league was down in the past until this year. The league is better this year because the league is up for grabs. Was anyone getting bored with SMCC winning every year?? I still see athletes all around the league on every team.

  3. All schools are scrambling for students (aka $$). This is true in every school district and this would also hurt numbers on all sports teams. I do agree that this is the reason for the league being down (also that ALL other leagues are down not just Huron League). Also many schools insist on additional sports and this further waters down the talent pool. Just saying that the league is down because there is no talent is simply not true.

  4. I don't know if anyone else noticed in the milan and huron game, but with about 30 seconds left huron failed to gain the first down on 3rd down but the clock was stopped until the ball was snapped on 4th down. That would have taken off at least 10 more seconds, and huron never gets the chance to run the last play they scored on as time would have ran out by then. The officials and coaches need to notice the clock isn't running in that situation. Milan should have won besides the other bad calls.

  5. After watching these first 3 weeks of games I have to say the league is pretty equal but is definatly down compared to what we have seen in the past. The teams are just struggling for numbers and the amount of athletic kids are way down. Each team has a few but not near the numbers we have had in the past. I am also suprised at the size and speed. The teams I have watched are slow and small except for a few on each team.

I hate saying the league is down also but its true. Just not all the talented athletic kids we have seen in the past.

  6. I said you had NO CLUE about your statment that HURON is as good as they were 10 years ago. If you truly believe that then you have NO CLUE. They are waaaay better than 10 years ago and the program is on the up. All your other dribble I just ignored.

  7. I know this is a subject that many roll their eyes at but the officiating needs to be addressed in the Huron League. Its as bad as I can ever remember and I'm mainly focusing on the player safety side of it. I watched a punter get clocked and got the ball away clean. Ref. standing right there and no call. Late hits and blocks in the backs and no calls. They don't seem varsity ready. A trend or is it just me?

  8. I hear Coach Mitroka (I think he played for Army) brings new excitement to the GI defense this year. He didn't appear active during the Varsity game. He has really helped the JV.

  9. To BN
I have a clue, trust me and I am not your friend.
I do agree that the league is well balanced this year.In past years we have had teams who were exceptional and teams that were good and the lower level teams that at least competed because they had some athletes, and usually 1 team that on the bottom.
This year, I am not sure we have that. The best team (whoever that is) is not that much better than the worst team (whoever that is).
So based on that you are correct in stating that the league is more balance. However, no one is very good this year, so I could say that the balance is among a bunch of lower talented teams.
We will see come week 10.

  10. This guy thinks Huron is as good as they were 10 years ago. What he means is as "bad" as they were 10 years ago. You haven't a clue my friend.

Anyway, HUGE games this week. Whoever wins the game between Huron and Riverview has a very very good shot at 6 wins. Game is at Huron so advantage Huron.

  11. RE:"SMCC – Needs to start the recruiting real quick. They are small and slow. May not win 6 games this year. If they do, they will lose in the first round."

So if CC is good it's because they recruited and if they arent, they need to start recruiting? Does Coach Giarmo know this?

  12. Hey Anonymous @ September 11, 2011 11:10 PM:

What are you even talking about?? Every team plays 2 non league and all the rest are League games. Didn't your team play the same team in wk 1 last year????

  13. Don't know how sick I am of hearing that the league is WAY DOWN! Maybe the teams are just a bit more balanced? Perhaps it's because these poster's teams aren't winning? I know for sure that if Huron League is down then yes – ALL LEAGUES ARE WAY DOWN. I know this because all of the camps, combines, etc. that my son has attended for the past two years he was right in the mix or even in the top tier with players from all other leagues in Southeastern Michigan so knock of the garbage that it's just the Huron League that is WAY DOWN! Good luck to all teams in the Huron League – thanks Chris – you do a great job on this blog.

  14. I will repeat myself, the Huron League is way down. The worst it has been in years. I repeat this and you will see come playoff time.
Airport – Will make the play offs and lose their first game, big and slow. They do not get off the ball very well at all.
Grosse Ile – Decent QB and running back, poor defense. They will make the play offs and lose in the first round.
SMCC – Needs to start the recruiting real quick. They are small and slow. May not win 6 games this year. If they do, they will lose in the first round.
Riverview – Maybe worst View team in years. Will not make the play offs.
Jefferson – WOrst team since the seventies. May not win 3 games this year.
Huron – Actually as good as they were 10 years ago, but instead of getting beat by 40 each game, they are actually winning. What doe s that say for the league? May win 5 or 6. Will lose the first round if they make the playoffs.
Milan – Not sure what is going on over there, but they ae slow as mud. The may only win 2 or 3 games.
Flat Rock – Terrible, worst I have seen from the Rams, but may actually win 2 or 3 games this year due to other teams being as bad or worse.
I love the Huron League and have watched it for many years. I have never seen a year when no one is very good.

  15. Airport had a harder football schedule last yr. This yr they have more league games and with the talent pool being so low in the league this yr. It makes Airport look like their really good. If they played more D1 schools like last yr. Bedford being one of them which they lost to again. Then you could really measure good players on the team.
Just my opinion Chris. I've seen the huron league look much better then this.

  16. CC lost to Detriot Crocket in the 2009 season at home and the year before that to jefferson at home and i think its funny how many excuses are on here im sure the players think its embarising.

  17. Your right 11:34. What i don't get is why the Evening News didn't send a writer to cover the game. I guess that Ida- Erie Mason game was more important. EM

  18. SMCC's loss was a combination of two things two dropped t.d passes and the lack of ability to stop kish from his three long t.d runs.

  19. It's not that hard to drive to Carleton to watch Airport play Riverview then drive to Navarre field the following week to watch SMCC and Grosse Ile. Duh????

  20. The reason why SMCC game was buried in the newspaper is because they lost to a downriver team. If they lost to another team in Monroe County it would have been front page. Monroe Evening News won't go to Grosse Ile to cover a game unless it's last league game of year for the league championship. When CC loses to Airport it will be front page.

  21. What a great catch by Huron senior Joe Coffee on the last play to win the game against Milan. Way to go Huron! You deserved to win that game.

  22. When was the last time a cc loss was 'buried'? keep in mind you dont have many to choose from. Before you say 'plymouth' , that loss was hardly news and quite frankly not much to write about.

    -bn

  23. I have to admit that I thought the same thing when I read the GI/SMCC article yesterday. It was most certainly buried.

Remember though, newspapers are businesses. The job is to sell papers. SMCC sells papers when its on the front page. Same with Monroe High and Monroe Jefferson. The name say it "The Monroe Evening News".

  24. I agree with the post about the players being kids. I hope, for their sake, that they do not read this blog. Some of the comments are pretty harsh. The boys already feel bad about losing. I'm sure they are out there trying their best. It is only high school. How about some positive comments on the many good players all the teams have?

  25. to the 3:06 poster

No you jack*** because airport is bad, and there is no "very good" team in the Huron league. the only very good team in the huron league was smcc in 2009 and 2010. and maybe airport in 2009. Obviously the league is way down, which we will all see come playoff time.

  26. Everytime CC wins its front page news, every time they lose they get a little section at the bottom of page 2. Get out of bed with CC Ron Montri, goodness gracious!

Ron Montri's fanatical obsession with SMCC is enough to make even Chris himself blush.

  27. Come on the players can handle some criticism, they are not babies. Alot of the precious little kids dish out some trash talk, they should be able to handle it when someone dishes it back.

  28. How big is Kish from GI?? He looks kinda small on news herald video. I want real height and weight-not coaches height and weight. One more thing-THIS BLOG IS SWEET!!!

  29. 3:06 comment-Are you serious???? Airport will dominate SMCC next week then destroy little Grosse Ile the week after. I've seen all 3 teams play and nobody matches up to Airports size and speed.

  30. There are no idiots that read the blog. Just fans who are FANatical about their teams.

I cherish everyone who visits the blog!

By the way, not a single hate mail yet this year. I must be getting wiser!

  31. Too many people on here take shots at the team that loses instead of praising the team that wins. Let's not forget, these are just high school kids 15-17 YO.

  32. 1:50 poster….
So when GI and SMCC both beat Airport this year will you say that they are good? or they will not be good until they beat someone like Plymouth (a team that neither would see in the playoffs)

GI is much improved on D and the O is better than last years team. I think that they will end up better than average this year.

  33. I meant very good compared to cc not eachother. One very good team and a good team, better? GI is better than average my friend and so is SMCC. I know folks like to rub in losses and that's ok but don't be fooled. The falcons, jets and red devils will all make the playoffs (view has shot as well). Which is what I Said before any games were played. Looking forward to seeing how good airport is.

    -bn

  34. SMCC has lost to 2 very good teams? come on. Plymouuth yes, but GI is very average. SMCC just isnt very good and GI only beat them by 6. How can you say GI is in the same breath as plymouth as a "very good team"

  35. So what's going on with Rob White? Thought he was some superstud. It's weird that the coaches of the 2 best QB's in the league are wasting their talent. Don't get me wrong, they're both doing good running the ball but I figured they would be airing it out alot more. Then again there's still alot of football left.

  36. This an anonymous forum. We don't know if it's even cc fans saying any of that. SMCC has lost to 2 very good teams. All is not lost.

    -bn

  37. It was a fantastic game between both teams in the milan/huron game. Both teams played well and never gave up. I know personally that milan made way too many mistakes and if the fans are complaining about the refs its their stupidity. The team didn't win so now they have to focus on Grosse Ile who's 2-0.

  38. Grosse Ile looked very good. Have many more offensive weapons than we saw. If passing game was on, game would not have been close.
Grosse Ile definitely best team in Huron League at this point.

Beating SMCC at home, no easy task
Big advantage to Grosse Ile, not using that same old Monroe County offense. The improving teams are moving away from it.

  39. Here are some older posts from this blog.

SMCC loses by 20! No way will GI lose to SMCC. Your pick is laughable!!! SMCC is waaaaay down this year and you and everyone else knows it.

Why would I pick against SMCC. They have made me look like a genius the last few years.

I think you all crazy. SMCC will roll over GI. I'm sure Giarmo and the boys are laughing right now. GI has beaten two bad teams. That is an Onsted team that will be lucky to win 2 games this season. A bad Flat Rock team was in the game at halftime then basically lost their two best players in the 2nd half. GI can score but SMCC will put up 35-40 points. SMCC 40 Grosse Ile 21

Well, I bet Giarmo and his boys stopped laughing after what happened last night.

  40. @12:42 Are you kidding? Did you watch the game? Riverview looked terrible and Jefferson is worse. That was a horrible game. If Riverview plans on going any further and making some noise they better get to work.

  41. Wow.. So many excuses as to why someones team lost. But yet there is no complaining when their team wins? Its high school football and the gamed go either way.. Milan and cc aren't that good this year and because they lose to 2 teams that everyone said would go nowhere, the excuses come out.. If its bad calls? Go be a ref and help your team win with lame calls like you want..

Hats off to huron and GI. Both are doing work this year and both are well improved. Keep it up guys 🙂

    KC

  42. Sounds like sour grapes over there at Milan a little bit.

I didn't see any holding call but I did see the official ready to throw an interference flag on Milan but he quickly stopped because he had to put his hands up signaling touchdown.

What's a matter the band didn't get enough halftime playing time bacuse Hurons coach was posturing?

You lost move on! I'm sure your team and coach has.

  43. -gh got word from the CC faithful that they are NOT very good this year? News to me. All the CC fans and everyone else claimed they would take the league again. Being the first loss since 2003 at their rented home doesn't take away the whoopin GI put on them! More home losses to follow….stat master! Oh wait….they play Winsor Assumption at home. They might win that one.

  44. The final play at Milan…a hugely obvious holding penalty was not called by the refs…it would have been a game ending sack for sure.

Embarrassing to win like that for Huron…its all on video.

But even more embarrassing for the Huron League and high school football to have such a poor level of officiating.

It was bad both ways for sure as we all saw the Huron coach giving the refs an earful at half-time.

This is just not good for the players.

And in the end, Milan got robbed.

  45. What a win for Huron! It looked identical to last year's heart breaking loss in OT. You can't say enough about the senior leadership on that team. Shawn Brewer was a beast running the ball and Zack Crespi had one of the gutsiest performances I've ever seen.

  46. Only 1 HL team is undefeated.
    ***** Grosse Ile *******

Check your sump pumps everyone, the winds of change aren't blowing anymore, the Storm is here!!!

    SITOFN

  47. Milan erases 20-7 deficit with 7 minutes to go by scoring twice and converting a 2 pt conversion to take a 21-20 with 58 seconds left. Huron goes 50 yards on 7 plays and scores on the last play of the game on a Zach Crespi to Joey Coffee 10 yard pass. Easily the most exciting Huron win I have ever witnessed.

  48. Got word from some CC faithful, that they are NOT very good this year, and they were not surprised by the loss. Incredible compliments about GI's Defense..

Huron and Grosse Ile answered alot of questions this week. wow
