Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Milan made me look really smart this week.

Grosse Ile made me look really dumb this week.

I told people Airport is good defensively.

The league title is still SMCC’s until someone takes it.

Riverview missed Tyler Chase Friday.

Maybe got caught peaking?

Maybe Jefferson should diversify the offense a bit.

Is Flat Rock really getting better?

Didn’t I suggest a month back that Jon Bodner was the best coach in the league?

Riverview has the best concessions in the league. Anyone ever had their double cheeseburger straight off of the grill?

The league could get crazy real quick.

Have to love the October football weather.

Football is usually about talent, but many times match ups matter most.

What was up with all the penalties on the island Friday?

SMCC @ Huron is the Game of the Week in week 4.

Many people think Harbaugh is Bo reincarnated, seems a little more Woody to me.

This is Sparta!

Forward down the field!

  1. Jon Bodner is without a doubt the best coach in the league. What he is able to do with the small amount of players he has is great. He is also surrounded by a great group. Pete Kelly was awarded assistant coach of the year at GI last Friday.

  2. I think Riverview will bounce back! These boys don't like loosing they are fighters and play hard every snap.. I'm not counting them out look for them to put the pieces back together. .GO BUCS!

    1. Only one. Last year I had a guy or gal do the same thing. If you read my posts you will see I never say negative things or sarcastic things about kids or schools. I will state my opinion but I will not belittle or make fun of. I know most kids at every school works hard and wants to win. Making fun of them is not who I am. So, if you see a post like the one about bacon cheeseburgers and some dumb ass wants to pretend to be me, you will know it's not the real #9 Dad.
      Thanks

  3. I think Milan, CC and Huron will all beat each other. The loss to GI put Huron in a bad spot to win the league. They have to sweep now, view, CC and Milan. That will be a tough task. I think Huron bounces back this week and has a big game against CC.

  4. Try Bagger Dave's in Woodhaven. On West Rd, in front of the Ford Plant. Very good Burgers. Maybe after the season is over.

  5. #9 Dad and other Milan faithful : you guys seem to give some great analysis, thanks. Being a riverview fan, I really agree with your solutions for our offense and can only hope our coaches may be checking in on this blog for some solid solutions — as I know they want what's best for the boys. Its a great group of kids who have played many years together. I'm confident they'll pull it together and compete the remainder of the season.

  6. Flat rock may not be the best team but their fans and especially their players were full of class, seemed like great young men from what I saw last Friday.

    1. First off, I would not say something about a school like that. I would appreciate you not pretending to be me and having people think that I would say something like that. I know you would like to be me but your not, never will so if you want to be like me, don't lie about who you are. Don't be a coward, and don't hide behind someone else like a candy ass.
I would never talk about kids and a school like that. Only facts. But feel free to come talk to me at any home game, I'm right by the booth. And any away game too, all you have to do is ask for #9 Dad. I'll be happy to "talk" to ya.

  7. The comments I've been reading about Riverview's passing game sound like what I was saying after the Milan loss to Marshall. Milan has put in some good work in practice to improve their passing game. It's never going to outshine the run game on this team, but it's important to mix in the pass to keep the defense honest.

It's also nice to see different Big Red receivers (Price, Hamilton, Gray) get involved to give Cam Elam some help. The touchdown pass by Barnes was a thing of beauty. At first, I thought it was an overthrown ball intended for Lindeman, but as I saw the ball continue to sail past Lindeman and over the Pirate defenders I saw that the pass was right on target for the much taller Hamilton who got behind the defense and was able to pull it down.

Milan has been able to make strides in the passing game, perhaps Riverview can as well. Their QB did have one nice deep ball, but unfortunately it bounced off of the shoulder pads of the intended receiver. Making that kind of connection, even just occasionally, loosens up defenses and can make that solid run game even more effective. Riverview's schedule should lighten up some, so hopefully those improvements can still happen. That's a team that's good enough to make the playoffs.

    1. Seems like RV good really be a "great" team if they had a passing game. I would mix in in some short routes, floods, maybe even a WR screen like Milan does to boost the QB's confidence. Couldn't hurt and it would make that power running game a lot better. I like RV's chances to make the play offs. With Hurons lose to GI, if they don't beat the big 3 that's left, RV, SMCC, and Milan, they are sitting at 5-4. Same thing with Milan but Milan has a better shot now that they won over RV. I think at worst Milan and SMCC go 6-2, that's at worst.
I totally agree with you and this week, this Friday will tell a lot about Huron and SMCC. I believe the odds are in favor for Milan to win the league out right at Airport, but there is still a lot of football left to play.

  8. Agree mostly with 8:10am. We will learn ALOT about SMCC and Huron next week. Should iron out some big question marks out there. I think Milan, Huron, and SMCC are all pretty close right now. GI is in my opinion the biggest wild card…it just seems like a mess this year haha. Not in a bad way, but in a way that makes me scared to make any sort of predictions.

    1. Who do you see as the league favorite right now? Even though SMCC is unbeaten they had a scare at RV. Should Huron beat SMCC? Should Milan win against both? I agree with you that GI is a sleeper, but I have to think their game against Huron was more luck than anything.

  9. It didn't matter if tyler chase played or not, Milan was by far the better team on Friday. (Although it was 14-7 at half without him) The View's offense is was too predictable 99% run with a pass when they are 3rd and long or behind the chains. I think if View's offense can figure it out maybe mix it up wit a run and pass every now and again to keep the defense on its heels and maybe not have 10 guys in the box, they could win out. They have made it through the toughest part of their schedule healthy now to just put it all together and run the rest of the league. 7-2 is still a good year!

  10. Milan definitely for real. Got full squad now, no stopping them.

SMCC, not sure yet. Huron and Milan to come.

Riverview, overrated, got some QB problems.

Airport, rough. Wanted it bad against Jefferson. Jefferson had better team, just played to conservative.

GI, not sure what you going to get, took Jefferson too lightly. Other than that, they are pretty darn good.

Flat Rock, hang in there, may get another win. Future looks pretty good.

  11. AP will not stop the ground game of Riverview. The line is huge gave Milan all they wanted. Good running back and throw in the Chase kid coming back. Best D AP has seen yet this season. 35-0 view. The AP line will have their hands full. Under 100 total yds for AP.

  12. I think Huron and SMCC are taking it to the wire Friday. I'm not much on predictions but I think Huron wins 28-21. I talked to one of the key players for Huron and he said they just played bad. No excuse. I believe him too. He is one of the best kids I know. The better team lost and that happens sometimes.
I also think FR will win a league game. They will win against Jefferson, Airport or GI. Maybe not all of them but I think they get a win out of tho use 3.
Chase would have made a difference against Milan but not a 3 score difference. I don't see RV losing anymore except to Huron. They will go 6-3 going in to the playoffs.
I don't think SMCC is over rated. They are good at what they do. They might not have what they have had in the past but they are still the League and State champs so you have to respect that. Don't take anyone lightly. Huron figured that out Friday.
One last thing, Milan grew up last year the hard way, this year they had a win slip away at Marshall, rebounded against FR, and went toe to toe with a very powerful team. Powerful I mean those are aome physically strong kids. Trace said they were the hardest hitting team he has played since the RV game when he was a Freshman. Milan got fire against RV. They figured out how to win with all the weapons they have. I'm pretty sure they will keep rolling. Just my thoughts.
Good luck to all the teams this week in practice.

  13. No I predicted FR would go 1-8 and beat summit academy, who if you look isn't even close in any games, at all. Other than Milan the league is down. Huron isn't what they were last year. Riverview isn't very good on O, GI is down, Airport is much down from last year..Jefferson might be the same team with a better defense, CC isn't close to what they were..FR is better by default because the league is down. FR won't win a league game but they'll be close, by close I mean 2 TD's in a few games. I do see Huron winning this week.

  14. Also CC attempted about a 30 yd field goal. Looked good from the stands and defiantly had the distance but I guess it went wide left a little as it was now good.

  15. From the stands it looked like solid blocking by CC's backs against Flat Rock Friday night. Part of the reason why the holes were so big for the ball carrier to run through. Don't know if anyone realized this or not but one of their backup backs, Slagle, used to be their starting TE but had to make the change to RB after the Trenton scrimmage due to the Shinevarre and Lapraid injury. Laplante and O'Brien have filled in nicely at the TE spot along with Woolford.

  16. I guarantee FR goes 1-8. They won't beat any league team. Riverview will be fine. Milan will beat SMCC by 2tds…Bodner is a good coach he always seems to have his kids bounce back after a tough loss….Huron has the most talent in the league but always seems to give away a key game…Jefferson was outcoached Friday..I cannot BELIEVE they didn't make any adjustments.
Watch for Riverview to go undefeated from here on out.

    1. Your probably the same guy that guaranteed FR wouldn't win a game this season. And if we're making guarantees I could guarantee that riverview will lose to huron.

    2. And if they don't, they can always go a short way for some "delicious double cheeseburgers"! You can always have it your way at PirateBurger!

  17. Riverview is having some serious issues at QB they better find another QB if they want to have an effective offense..just running the ball with the same RB over and over isn't going to get it done either! I love Riverview football the defense is pretty good the offense is horrible…there are other skill players that can be effective coaches just have to make the change. Just my opinion

  18. Jefferson should diversify they have some running backs also receivers or back from llast year a senior quarterback.who was a big part of offense senior receivers who r back.r good

  19. So the rumor was that Tyler Chase had a concussion on a play where he put his head across a body on a back side block and he was knocked out for a good 5 seconds. He later went back into play and according too coaches and players he said something to the trainer Monday. He is suppose to be back Monday this week. There's a lot of team issues though in Riverview right now and the kids and coaches aren't on the same page. Something needs too be done quick if they wanna make some noise and come back. I think they have the team to do it. – Riverview sports fan

  20. Is that why he changed his number???

Chris sometimes mentions home field not mattering much in HS football <— I disagree with him completely. What you saw from the refs in GI was some good ole home cooking. If that game was in Huron.. I would bet the farm GI gets waxed.

    -bn

    1. There were flags being thrown heavily at GI as well. I was at the game and witnessed it. Huron is a good team. GI was just the better team that night. But hey, keep sleeping on them and "looking ahead" we will see what happens.
      RN

    2. There were flags on both sides. It was a fair game, I would know. I was there. Huron played undisciplined football. The better team won on Friday.
      RN

    3. I didn't attend the Huron-GI game, but if I had to guess, there was a ton of holding calls against Huron? Previous week, zero flags and many, many blatant holds by Huron O-line. And I'm not talking about holds that never get called (hands inside), I'm talking about hands outside on shoulder pads, arms across bodies, pull downs from collar, etc. If Huron needs home cooking to block AP and GI, they are in trouble.

    4. "Flags were being thrown heavily at GI"
      "Huron played undisciplined football"

Uhm… Yeah. I don't have words for that one.

      KC

    5. Sorry BN I have to disagree. There were some terrible early calls against grosse ile. Fans were saying they must be Monroe refs. Watch the film. Huron got frustrated late in the game and made some bad decisions. Huron should have won but not because of the calls. The coaches should have adjusted. Huron is way bigger, they could run Grosse Ile over.

  21. Milan is legit, with a healthy #9 they might be the league favorite. Airport is strong defensively, gotta get the offense going if they wanna pull an upset or two. SMCC is king until knocked off, Huron and Milan have the best chances of doing that. Huron was looking ahead and GI took advantage. I don't know the Woody-Harbaugh comparison, but Woody won alot of Big 10 titles and a national title so I'll take it as a Michigan fan. Congrats Chris on your Spartans last night, that was a great game. I know you were holding your breathe when Oregon's QB missed his man on the go ahead score in the last minute. EM

  22. My ? is . Is there a team in the huron league that is or should be worried about flat rock. They have been the bottom for 2 years now ,there going to win a league game but aginst who? They have played the toughest schedule milan then smcc for the first two weeks of league play, now things are going to open up a bit the next 3 weeks for FR
