Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to Grosse Ile and Milan on their Huron League Championship. I hope they play again.

Nice team win Jefferson.

Anything can happen during rivalry week.

Loss to rival, now off to play one of the best teams in the state.

I didn’t think the defense would be a problem for the Jets.

I may be spot on in a few of my predictions.

Still shaking my head.

Best overall player in the league?

I doubt if we will see a playoff run by anyone in the league.

What game should I go see in week 9?

Looking into the future, I see the past becoming the present.

I don’t think I have ever seen a parent act like that big a fool, ever!

Lot’s of love for my partner in the comment sections this week. Lol!

State sucks!

  1. I think everyone on here has made valid points about each kid. To me it comes down to who has the biggest impact for their team. The body of work they have done for the season or career, and who is a difference maker. Like I said there are several kids deserving.

  2. The future is bright for many teams. I see parity for several years. Several schools have some good squads at the lower levels, but when each school puts their best 11 on the field, grades 9-12, that all changes. So for that great Airport 10th grade class and the potentially good SMCC 9th grade class. We will see what the future brings.

I say there will not be a clear front runner for many years to come.

  3. Joey Flaherty was a big boost for the Bears with Sovey out. He really got the team fired up and helped team confidence. At 100% he is right up there with Humphrey and Sovey as far as a very good player. He does a lot of the little things that we don't hear about.

  4. Voting a BEST PLAYER in the league is ridiculous. All the teams in the league have great players who can fill their specific teams needs. Nick Humphrey has been very impressive and consistent as the DO ALL player for the Bears. There is no question about the impact that Barnes and Lindeman provide for the Big Reds. They are both impact players on both sides of the ball, but unfortunately they don't have the big defensive stats because they don't have too….they have help. Michael Furtney, the junior lineman for the Big Reds is a huge player for the Big Reds. He is double and triple teamed every game they play, and his presence forces teams to run away from him 90% of the time. Vollmerhausen is the same as Humphreys….does a ton for the Red Devils on both because he has too.

These are all very accomplished players within their respective teams and do whatever the TEAM needs them to do. But – to say that one is better than the other just doesn't care any justification.

  5. 249 brings up valid points for Moores. Especially if you look at his body of work for the past 4 years. However, if you're looking at this season only I'd give the mvp Volmerhausen. He's done a great job on both sides of the ball,Very durable, and a great leader. Moores is definitely in my top 5 in tbe league. He's done everything GI has asked of him. Great player.

  6. Huron will bounce back this week, defense will shape up, be ready for a playoff run, proud of my son and all the other hogs

    1. I've beat Andy Vollmerhausen in madden every night for the past 10 years…. he's not the best player in the league….

  7. Still some chance since they only lock up 5 wins, but beating Owosso helps with 80 base points since they are class A… Should be able to make it… The rest of the Huron League winning this weekend helps too…

  8. As for what game to see this week, this might be a good week for Chris to watch the ol' Alma Mater (not sure if he's had the chance to see a Rams game this season), as Flat Rock hosts Hazel Park with a chance to end the season with a win streak. Otherwise, Rouge at Riverview might be an interesting game.
Either SMCC and Jefferson would be fun to watch this week. They are both chasing a shot at the postseason, but both have pretty lengthy road trips (Lansing CC and Owosso, respectively).

  9. If you are going in that direction OG Islander, then the best overall player would be #9 Moors from GI. He's the only true 4 year varsity starter & he's the best receiver in the league. He was #1 as a frosh and played safety. He had to switch to QB after always playing WR and did a fair job at 69% completion last uear with well over 1000 passing yards, and that's with no experience. This year, he's at 85% as a receiver, he threw 280 yards at 80% against the Jets. He's their kicker and his average punting yards is 48, with a few in the high 50's. Lindeman is great, can't beat his speed and agility, Vollmerhausen is a beast on both sides, but as an athlete and all around football player, it's moors hands down.

    1. Are you serious? I'm not even going to dive into an in depth analysis of my reasoning. You should be supportive of both athletes. Clearly there is an underlying issue here.

      OG Islander

    2. For once I agree with OG here. All of these kids who have been mentioned are true athletes and all around great football players.

    3. OG, what's your problem? Are you trying to start a problem amongst teammates? Think before you speak in a public forum like this. If you have an underlying issue, that's your problem

  10. FWIW, Adrian sits at 5-3 with a tough home matchup vs. 6-2 Bay City John Glenn on tap. Obviously if they win, they're in, but they'll be the underdogs on Friday. Snooze still projects them to make the playoffs, but I'm admittedly too lazy to break down the playoff points of the Maples vs. other bubble teams but I'd be curious to see the findings if someone wants to take that on.

Adrian has no wins against >.500 teams this season. Their best win seems to be their 29-22 win over 4-4 Ypsi Lincoln in Week 3. They have wins over two in-conference dumpster fires in 0-8 Dexter and 0-8 Ann Arbor Huron.

  11. That is very intresting stuff, I hope my bears win along with every other Huron league team this week, good luck to all, show them how we play ball! Huron League style -UncleOf38

  12. Go Jefferson! Who do they play? I'll send that team a batch of pre-game cookies with a little ex-lax in them- jk, lol.

  13. Check out the stats on both sides of the ball, all of the above mentioned are great players. Humphrey takes it statistically. That kid is a animal and plays with HEART!

    1. And you think these other kids don't?? I believe Lindeman surpassed the 5000 career rushing yards this weekend per the paper so if we are talking stats let be honest lol.

  14. GI and Milan should be rooting heavily for Jefferson this week. If they make it in, Rouge should get pulled north in DCD's district. You would most likely see a district of Jefferson @ Milan and Adrian @ GI.

  15. Lindeman by far is the Huron league MVP. As great as he is on offense, his defense skills are just as much of a threat. If Lindeman had played on defense against smcc you would have no co-champion this year.

    1. Does it matter why he did not play on defense or about his carries? He's a great player, along with #6 and as the dynamic duo they are a huge threat to any team they play. If their line is making their blocks then these 2 are unstoppable. Let's not take anything away from ANY of these players on any team just because we think our guy is the best. They all make an impact one way or another.

  16. On a side note, both the Detroit news and Free Press ranked the Huron league teams in this order back in August. 1. Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central )2. Milan 3. Riverview 4. New Boston Huron 5. Grosse Ile 6. Carleton Airport )7. Monroe Jefferson 8. Flat Rock

  17. There are several great players on each team that might be deserving of the overall mvp.
State is bad, but my Vols couldn't hang with Bama so I have nothing.
SMCC most likely has the toughest opponent this week. Maybe they can get an up set there.

  18. I would like to give a about our to the Riverview Pirates these boys worked hard and kept plugging away through a lot of adversity this season never gave up. This team is a lot better than their record and next season will be a different outcome! Go Bucs

  19. Milan fan here. I want to give the Airport kids some credit on Friday. The score was not indicative of the way Airport played. We had a weird bounce on an interception, a fumble recovery deep in Airport territory, and as usual some absolutely sick runs from Lindeman. Airport guys played hard and fair. They moved the ball most of the night. A goal line stand by Milan also took away a score. I say these things because it can't be easy to only have 1 win, and show up every day to practice, get on a bus and travel to your opponents venue, and have some folks berate you every week. I applaud the Airport staff and players for looking adversity in the face and not backing down; that is the biggest win of all.

    1. Parent of a Flat Rock player who was on Varsity when they were not winning any games. Your comment is spot on. While FR isn't playoff bound, the kids are proud to be part of turning things around. Hang in there AP and keep your heads held high. There is no shame in losing when you are giving maximum effort, and in time your effort will result in wins.

    1. Vollmerhausen has more rushing yards, tackles, interceptions, defensive touchdowns, and overall touchdowns collectively than Humphrey or Lindeman. He is twice the defensive player as Barnes. Vollmerhausen is statistically the best two way player in the league.

      OG Islander

    2. No he does not Lindeman has 1057 yards rushing Vollmerhausen has 933 yards, with the sams attempts. Lindeman did not play defense against SMCC and only played the second half against GI. Naturally you are going to give your guy MVP, they may be close but Lindeman has an edge over your guy.

    3. how can you say that? He hasn't been on defense as much as your guy and still has 52 tackles compared to 71. Total all purpose yards are 1453 to Vollmerhausens 1143.

    4. Vollmerhausen** is the best two way player in the league because he makes the most impact on both sides of the ball. Simple as that. Lindeman does not play defense as much. Does he not belong on defense or not fit enough for two way?

    5. Belong? Not fit enough? Yep you are right. He's way out of his league and has no business being out on the field since he does not belong and is not fit enough to play both ways. What a joke, that kid works his butt off for haters like you to say crap like that. Does it matter what we say? Do we really need to belittle other players because we think our kid is the best? WOW is all I can say.

  20. I know exactly who that guy was. We were sitting on the Huron side of the field because obviously there was no place to sit on the visitors side. This guy was at the top row right in front of the press box in the aisle below the FR coaches. He was screaming at the top of his lungs the entire game. Everything was directed at the coaches. He even yelled at the people in the press box. He kept moving up and down the bleachers yelling. He was blocking people from seeing the game. I am assuming he a has a son on the team. Most schools have a parent that screams and cries during games but this tool bag took it to another level. I was hoping someone would say something to him but I think they were too embarrassed. If he has a kid on the team then shame on him. If he doesn't have a kid on the team then shame on him as well. He is an absolute dipstick!

  21. Top 5 most valuable in the league:

    1. Lindeman
    2. Barnes
    3. Humphrey
    4. SMCC lighting department
    5. SMCC lawn maintenance

  22. Brent Kosikowski is a completely slept on player from Huron. He has been my son's teammate for years and that kid is hands down one of the best two way lineman I have ever seen play. Definitely somewhere in the top 10 in the league.

  23. I for one thought the comments to Gary were hilarious! The man wasn't in no way defending CC. He was just using CC facts and their history to rebuttal everyone's trash talking of CC not "being able to catch the rabbit" in the playoffs lol like come on. You can't sit there and talk trash about a successful program who has seen the playoffs more than the rest of the league combined, then get mad when someone hits you with the #truth. I applaud Gary for the way he handled himself. Very level headed in his response to those who's head it went over.

I truly thought this season turned out to be the most competitive it's ever been. Not a single game was guaranteed. and everyone had to fight for their W.

Congrats to Flat Rock on taking Huron to the shed. Hate to say it, but if you can't beat a young team like Flat Rock, then you're not gonna get very far in the playoffs. Considering the teams Huron will potentially face (if they beat Summit), their playoff run will be short lived.

Congrats on Jefferson as well for coming out strong with their W! It's not easy to brush off a loss from the week prior, then to come out and slap CC, that's what's up! I hate to say that I've doubted you guys all season, but glad to see y'all showed me you aren't in the bottom of the league 👍 Keep improving and give this league a run for their money!

Congrats to Milan and GI on their Co League a championship. Can honestly say it'd be a blast to see you two meet up again in the playoffs and see who comes out victorious once more 🤔 If I had a guess, I'd say Milan would come out with the W again, but it'd be a nail biter for sure. Good luck to you both in the playoffs!

Best overall player I'd give to Lindeman. Kids a beast and he was definitely the major key in Milans success. 👍

    KC

  24. Huron League Top 5 players:

    1. Lindeman
    2. Barnes
    3. Humphrey
    4. Mossberg
    5. Vollmerhausen

    6. Sovey
    7. Daniels
    8. Becker
    9. LaPlante

    1. Mossberg and Daniels….. not in the right the correct spots at all, they should be 9 and 10, everyone behind them moves up. -UncleOf38
