Monroe Jefferson @ Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central

Monroe Jefferson (3-4) is coming off a 30-15 loss to New Boston Huron while SMCC (4-3) defeated Milan 30-20.  SMCC won last season’s matchup 49-7 and leads the all-time series 34-15.

Jefferson was said to resemble a “mash unit” with the amount of substitutes that played, mainly due to injury.  It didn’t help that Huron brought their “A” game and took advantage of a Jefferson squad with no Brandon Sovey amongst others.

SMCC handled business last week with their 3rd victory in a row over a talented Big Red tribe.  The Falcon’s backs were against the wall and they played like it, with plenty of emotion and heart.  Can they harness that spirited play which will be needed the rest of way?

The competitiveness of this game would seem to be determined by whether or not Jefferson’s QB Brandon Sovey will suit up.  We got word on the blog that he is playing vs SMCC. If that is the case, it will be all hands on deck for the Boys from Beach.  Nick Humphrey(SR), Devon Rozmiarek(JR) and Nolan Willard(SR) will be counted on in all facets of play to keep this game close.  SMCC as always will rely on the ground and pound of Kevin LaPrad(SR), Colin Woolford(JR) and Nick Marino(SO).  Justin LaPlante(SR) seems to be recovering from his injury, with an outstanding defensive performance last week.  Center, David Brinkmaier, gave the Falcons a big boost with his return to the playing field.

Rivalry-Rivalry-Rivalry!!
When these two teams meet, one thing is for sure… you can throw the records out the window.
As a matter of fact these two bitter enemies are 9-9 over the last 18 meetings.  Cant get any more even than that.  Yes, CC has dominated the last 2 meetings but this Bear team actually has a pulse.  Playoff life is on the line for both teams.  This one should be a doozy.  2011 all over again.
PICK: Jefferson 28 SMCC 26

Chris Schultz Pick: SMCC 26 Jefferson 20

  1. We shall see tonight. Bears were getting carted off all game last year. Guess we get to see what this "hype" is all about in Newport. See if the bears are back. LOL

  2. I have seen a Falcon attempt to eat a Bear. The bear was highly annoyed and smashed it against a tree. Just saying.

What does a Falcon eat? Money? LOL.

  3. Falcons coming into stride. As a unit. Finally. This young team led by a group of junior/senior leaders. Good time of year to get the gears turning as one. We are CC!!! Tomorrow we eat

  4. We're too slow too small too weak no depth we recruit we pay off the refs our pants are blessed by the Pope we get special treatment bc we have priests on our sidelines the lights at Navarre are too dim the grass is too high…blah blah blah. Been following the blog for years…come up with something new. Let the boys play and leave it all on the field. WE ARE CC!!

    1. Its just jokes and statements bc it is a Catholic private school in a league with public schools. Don't act like everyone is making excuses haha

  5. Agree w Gary, no one is pointing a finger at the student. The question is how will Jefferson administration rule. Consistent with other kids or special rules for football stars?

  6. Everyone wants to point the finger. Until it's your own. Good kid, good family. People make mistakes. Good people do actually. As if anyone here was any better at that age. Is it right? No, but there are far worse things in life then this. I'm sure the media coverage has been enough on him. Be adults here and leave it be. These are still kids.

  7. Biggest Jefferson vs Smcc game since 2004.
But don't expect an 8-0 final.
Some big names. Big hits. And Big plays.
As Gary said. Should be a Doozy

  8. I think your a little off this year 7:47. A less than 200 lb linebacker will have a hard time tackling Humphrey or Sovey. We do have some smaller backs that they could get if they can catch them.

It will be a great game regardless, Jefferson is way more intense this year and have kept the penalties under control. SMCC has not been as good as in the past.

This means a lot to both teams, playoffs, local respect, recruiting. Numbers are dwindling at SMCC, beating the local rival means a lot.

    BEAR DOWN.

    BEARS 30, SMCC 20

  9. Have you people not figured out its not about records. Anyone can beat anyone in this league on any given Friday night. Rosters may say different but these are teenage boys playing their hearts out. Sometimes they are focused sometimes not so much. Sometimes they play team football, sometimes not so much. Rivalry week brings another element to it. Some kids understand this and will thrive on it. Some don;t get it or don't care and will regret it when they lose. All bets off this week when it comes to records. Its all about execution, attitude, and desire to beat your rival in the trenches.

  10. I'm neither a Jefferson or SMCC parent. That being said, any discussions related to to the discipline of a student is completely and utterly inappropriate in this forum. Discuss what you will amongst your friends about a "child", but conjecture and judgement should be kept to yourself. Imagine if it were your son or friend.

    1. I will agree to disagree on this subject. These athletes need to realize that, right or wrong, they are being watched. They are being put on a pedestal by younger football players/kids hoping to be them one day. They need to set an example; and if it were my son I would tell him the same thing! Good people do make bad choices but every bad choice has consequences no matter who you are. I'm sure all eyes are on administration to see how this is handled. Best of luck to both teams!

    2. Well said 11:27! Athletes of any Sport need to uphold a respectable manner of conduct. Scholastic, Sportmanship and their use of leisure time. Athletes are representative's of their School. Younger students as well as their community are watching! Concessions should not be made because of a scoreboard.

  11. Does SMCC have 3 band members? Last I knew, band numbers were very low there.
Jefferson wins everytime in that category. We do have a great band.

  12. LOL. Newport is a great. Lots of good people. Jefferson, SMCC, and Airport all have kids from Newport. I'm sure it fuels the rivalries.

This could be forbidden ground, but I even know a few "beachrats" that attend SMCC.

  13. RK is a long time Jefferson supporter and board member. He will do what is best.

LaPrad is from Carleton. Flint, Laplante, great kids from Newport, but it will take a lot more than them 2 to stop the other 30 kids on Jefferson's roster from Newport. Not nearly as much Newport green as there used to be.

    GO BEARS !!!

  14. Humphrey and Sovey are both very talented ball players. I expect a competitive first half. But I don't believe they have ever been matched up by the physical run stop that Catholic Central has. A lot of Newport boys suiting up in green friday. Justin LaPlantes last home game of his stellar 3 year varsity career. Expect him and Newport natives Kevin Laprad, and Dominic Flint to take over early.

  15. Wow, Mr. Hauf, surprised you picked against your boys. Definitely will create some grief for yourself. LOL.

I am a Jefferson guy, so your pick is all good with me. I think this will be a dogfight. Jefferson really wants this one and playoffs are at stake. It sounds as though SMCC has a good chance of losing their last season game and Jefferson has a good chance of winning their final regular season game, obviously you never know, but that seems to be the prediction.

These teams match up well, run very similar offense, talent and heart are going to win this one. The Bears have the most heart they have had in awhile. Several great athletes this year also. I think the Bears will get it done.

    Jefferson 22- SMCC 20

  16. Jefferson wins this easy.. Smcc will have no answer for Sovey and Humphrey.. I watch film on Smcc really not that good and got lucky one game vs Milan.. Luck runs out and no playoffs for Smcc.. Jefferson 49 Smcc 12

    1. Correct. Not very good at all. I'm more confused that they have won 4 games. Weak line. Poor defense. Should be a bear beat down at Navare. The Smcc era is over. Humphrey is the best linebacker/running back in the county. And will make it known Friday. Him and sovey are much to talented for the undersized linebackers at CC

    2. Ok this is what cracks me up. Who really knows who will win. But a "Blow out" by Jefferson? Come on your smarter than that.
      Huron League Fan

    3. It will take more than 2 players to win this game 7:08 am. All we here about is Sovey and Humphrey. See that is why SMCC will prevail because they will bring a complete team Friday night.Just ask Milan.

    4. Undersized linebackers? Hm let's see.
      laplante is 6'2 215.
      Obrien is 6'4 210
      Haut is 6'7 probably 170
      Laprad is 6'2 maybe 190..

Very undersized in my opinion 😂

I think smcc 34 Jefferson 12 seems about right

  17. Really like your posts Gary, and a pretty good pick I think. Would love to watch that one. Flat rock Huron is another good one to watch as well.
