Hope and Concern: Bedford Kicking Mules

By Frank Vajcner

We continue on with our hope and concern series with Bedford.

Biggest Reason for Hope: Sophomore QB who has experience in big moments. As a freshman, Brody Leonhard took over the starting quarterback job in the middle of the season. Granted, he didn’t have to do much in a run-heavy offense, but when you are under center for the biggest win of the year, that’s a feather in your cap. Leonhard will be leaned on more this season by John Phillips. Is a breakout campaign on the horizon?

Biggest Reason for Concern: Big shoes to fill on defense. There are big losses on both sides of the ball, but the biggest will be on the defensive side with having to replace Tommy Huss at defensive end and Trey Brueggeman at linebacker. Both players were key in knocking off Saline last season, as well as helping the unit hold opponents to 17 points per game, the lowest mark since 2016. While the Mules did have a strong JV team, whether that translates to success at the next level remains to be seen.
