  1. "There is much more to be said of making a kid from the East end of Monroe an academic all star, than a kid from Carrington. The kids from Carrington are expected to be, the kid from the east end may never be. Please don't tell me its a level playing field.

I'm not sure who you are, but at times you sound knowledgable, which is great for the blog, but as for a realistic approach of SMCC vs. the rest of the league, you have missed the boat entirely.
Maybe someday you will get it."

This has been said many times before by others… or maybe it was you, not sure.

Are you saying that SMCC gets a better brand of child? Because that's what I read into it. Not something I think is necessarily true and if it were, its not something Im going to apologize for.

You pick the most extreme circumstance to make your point.

There are PLENTY of kids who attend SMCC and do not live in Carrington or any place like that. I too could go on and on…

Lets just stick to football and the facts.

SMCC has three 180 pound offensive lineman who are all juniors btw and a 150 lb 5'6 nose tackle. Their best RB (debatable) weighs 160lbs and that 150 lb nose tackle is also the full back.

There are 4 teams in the league who are twice that size nearly and have great Qbs and awesome RB's.

I don't see, on the field man to man, how SMCC has such a huge advantage over anyone else. They only have 31 on Varsity. Maybe the 2nd lowest number in the league(its pretty close)

Huron and Tecumseh both had teams who were WAAYYYY bigger then SMCC. (Are you going to argue that they are from the east end of their area thus cant be good? I doubt you will.) Huron and Tecumseh will win a lot of games this year but lost by a combined score of 75-20. I give the credit to a little bit of fortune indeed, but mainly to the coaching staff.. SMCC has a very good one. especially the head guy.

I often wonder if coaches think like you do and just fold their tents when they play SMCC.. "I mean they get a better brand of kid so we have no chance, despite the fact we are much bigger than them and have comparable QB and RB."

I hope coaches and players don't think like that or like you do, I should say.

Like I always say, Losers make excuses

If your team was winning and beating SMCC you would not be saying any of this. NOBODY WOULD.

Its only because they are good at some sports and thus you have to find a reason your lil Johnnie keeps losing.

Those are called excuses and oh by the way… only losers make them. Winners don't make excuses.

  2. It is old news of SMCC's situation, but you know what, its true. I could go on and on. This is always denied. I went to SMCC, I did not care for it and I have no regrets. I am currently a major part of the youth sports community around here, CYO, first downers, basketball, baseball, etc. I have my opinions, you have yours. Until your on the public school side of the fence, you will never understand. You just preach work hard, losers have excuses and all that. Public school is reality, you have to deal with all comers, not just the best of the best.

There is much more to be said of making a kid from the East end of Monroe an academic all star, than a kid from Carrington.

Maybe someday you will get it.
I won't continue to argue with you any further, lets play ball!

  3. I looked back at last years blog stuff. Milan was getting the same treatment as CC is now. Everyone whining and complaining.

Just goes to show you if you are on top, some people will try to take you down anyway they know how. Even if it is by undermining the hard work of 16-17 year old kids.

  4. "Most people in my neck of the woods don't care for CC"

If that doesn't say it all then I don't know what will.

I will let that statement speak for itself
    -bn

  5. Each year you get new sets of parents in here bringing up the same old stuff. It just gets so old.

I've been with the blog since it's inception. You wouldn't believe what gets said on here. And that's only the stuff Chris let's through.

My take is, if someone in life is better than you at something it's a good lesson to try and better yourself in order to compete rather than whine and cry and complain and moan over and over and over.

All the names on CCs team are household CC names over the years.

Maybe they are just good. Maybe they work hard just like everyone else.
Maybe they have a heck of a coach.

It's easier to come up with excuses as to why ones better than you than it is to come up with reasons.

Work hard, get better, have fun

    The playing field is equal

    -bn

  6. I have some great kids and I bet our kids have probably met. Most people in my neck of the woods don't care for CC and we all are going to turn out just fine. Plus save a good $30,000 to put toward college.

I do not appreciate that comment
    bn

  7. SMCC has won the league more than double of any other team, since it has begun.

Nice dinner on Friday nights sounds good.

No Loser here, just realistic. I know your kids on the team, so obviously you are loving all this.

  8. Full steam ahead until you are up by 35, and always for the entire first half. That's not unsportsmanlike football, it's smart football. The starters deserve at least one half even in a blowout.

  9. The only way to keep the score down is to play defense. If the other coach isn't stopping it, why should the other team lower it's capabilities to make it fair? Life isn't fair and not everyone can get an award for just trying. We have a league champion for a reason. They show up. They play the game. And they win. They earn it. No team should have to take it easy on another team to be sportsmanlike.

    KC

  10. Keeping score down and passing with 8 seconds to o……not the same thing. I agree with you they need to stop them but have a clue, don't call timeout and then throw, take a knee go to half and come back

  11. Just an FYI, it isn't the job of the coach that is winning to keep the score down. It is the job of the other coach. With that said, most coaches pour it on until you get a running clock. That would be a 35 point lead. Playing your best for a half is also acceptable as well. I notice they didn't score in the second half. Wasn't that good sportsmanship?

On a personal note, three times in my basketball coaching career, my teams have been up 25 points in the first half and I have chosen to back off. Each time my team lost. In 2012, my ATA varsity had a 33-7 lead on Airport in the second quarter. I pulled off the press, lost all the momentum, couldn't make a shot and lost 76-70. The next day, one of my players came up to me in the hallway and asked why I had pulled off the press. I said, I was trying to be a good sport. He replied with what I had always taught him as he put his arm around me. Coach, it isn't your job to keep the score down, it's the other coaches job. I coached three more games and as the AD, I fired myself at the end of the season. True Story!

  12. I think the league is great but needs to divide into two divisions. I think you could use a big and small school division, and hen it would be more balanced. As population fluxes and school sizes change it could be realigned.

  13. Is anyone else disgusted with the lack of Sportsmanship shown by GI last week? Up 35 to 7 with 1:30 to go to half and you are throwing, then you punch it in!!! Then when youngest the ball back with 8.7 seconds left you throw a deep pass when you are up by 35!!! To me that is nothing short of poor sportsmanship and a lack of character by the coaching staff. The school, the league and the coaches should be embarrassed by that behavior…. It is second only to cheap shots from behind at kids knees, oh wait those were present as well.

What happened to respect and sportsmanship, is it lost in the me society we live in?

    1. You obviously don’t understand the game or what is going on with a comment like that. GI’s quarterback is out. Moores, who is a WR, and has always been, is the QB. What if he has to step in again? He needs as much experience as possible. You can be an excellent athlete, but experience is very important as a QB. So the coach tried to shove as much experience in one game as possible. It’s smart, not poor sportsmanship. Sounds more like sour grapes to me while the coach is thinking about the entire season

  14. Noone should be kicked out of the league this is the first year it has been brought up because Huron lost one game? Pathetic to be honest…. you don't see flatrock trying to get out of the league .when Is the last time they have had a winning season? Win a league championship? Been awhile so quit crying and let the 17 and 18 year olds play the game they love

  15. LOL WHAT!?

    80-90% ? ?

Coach Giarmo has been in the league for 16 years he has won 4 Championships.

    That is 25%
    I wish it were 80%!!

In that span Airport has won 7

    Losers make excuses

    -bn

  16. Coach Giarmo took over in 1998 I believe, he has won 4 huron league crowns.

In that same span Airport has won 7 and Milan 5.

    What are people complaining about?

  17. Did you read where SMCC's line is so small in the interior?

3 guys way 180 or less

All of those players on the team went to catholic grade schools. the total of those 8th grade classes has about 50 boys.

How may 8th graders does Huron get to choose from? or Airport or Milan?

    quit crying and making excuses.

you make big claims and cry under anonymity.

put your name to it, mouth.

  18. You notice no other schools want SMCC to stay. (just Riverview) There are 90 plus conferences in our state, less than 10 have a single private school in them with the rest being public schools. All other private schools are in their own leagues. Also, of those few conferneces who do have a private school, who do you think wins the league 90% of the time?? Memories, battles, whatever?? Its not apples to apples no matter whos coaching, size of your kids, whatever. SMCC will win the league 80% to 90% of the time for as long as they are here. Can't see anybody wanting that to continue.

  19. 1 player doesn't win a game. As an SMCC fan, you should know that. As far as getting lit up this year, I've heard that the last few years and Milan won both games.

  20. I'm a dad of a Milan player and seeing the 3 first games so far has been a little painful. Milan is a good team playing bad. They stepped up some against Jefferson. They have the talent and we all know the coaching staff is great. They will struggle against SMCC but do have the potential to win that game. The Riverview game was just a bad outing for the big reds and they deserved to lose that game. This week at New Boston should be a great game. I believe if they can start playing to their abilities they can win. It will be nice to see them out it all together.

  21. Id say Milan had the best talent to go with good coaching.

Lets see how Hoskins does this year without the best team and players.

  22. Id like to get rid of Huron and Rivierview. Schools are too large for the Huron League. I would much rather have Ida and Erie Mason.

Riverview has grown by 290 students and Huron has grown by 230 over the last 20 seasons.

How can you not be good when you have such and advantage?

  23. Lets not forget that SMCC is by far the smallest school in the Huron league. 3-4 schools more than double their enrollment.

Tecumseh and Huron had more size up front and couldn't get the job done.

  24. Every team in this league has the talent to be successful minus Flat Rock for the moment. There's a reason why Milan has beat SMCC for the last two years. "Coaching"

    1. Coaching is part of it the players are on the field if it is coaching then what happened against Riverview? It's still a long season so we will see if the coaching will even win the league like the last two years

  25. People often make the mistake of confusing the T with simple. So many different blocking schemes and RB options. It is quite far from simple. Which is why it is very hard to stop.

    -bn

  26. SMCC has established a consistent program . Their offense, defense and special teams play hasn't changed much in several years and isn't over ally complicated but they execute it all very well. And, the kids that play there expect to win……and know how to it. Very simple….success brings success.

The Huron league will chase SMCC this year perhaps, but the league is very competitive in the middle. Teams just need to continue to get better each week and see how it comes out. No matter, exhibit great sportsmanship for that is what people are really going to remember.

    1. LOL no I know who you are Chris and this definitely wasn't you. Dude kept spitting up the vodka lugey and taking swigs and chasing with the powerade. My fiance and I were dying laughing. Lol

      KC

  27. My 2 cents on recruiting comments:

CC has lost more players to other schools than gaining players. The reason they do well year in and year out is because they buy into the system. People who go to SMCC out of middle school know exactly what football team they're going to be a part of.

CC prides themselves on their tradition. It doesn't take a whole lot of talent to make their offense work. All that system needs are people who are willing to work. Giarmo has a system that doesn't require talent. The defense operates similarly.

The constant comments about how SMCC has the advantage over other schools because they can recruit are ridiculous. At this level of play, coaches are everything, and Giarmo is hard to beat.

  28. Okay, in other news, did ANYONE at the SMCC/Huron game, see the old man on the hoveround on the Away side at Navarre drinking the pint of popov vodka and powerade!? Something tells me he knew about a party that we didn't. LOL

Anyways, I had high hopes in Huron, and I still do. We lost to a team that played better. Congrats to CC and best of luck in the rest of your year. Until next years match up, I'll have zero comment to your future games lol

Huron, heads up and practice hard and get ready for Milan. You're not out yet. You have every chance to show the league you still have what it takes to contend with the best.

    KC

  29. With all due respect, it is really one lone person commenting. There is one in every crowd. Just ignore them and save the lectures.

  30. So before you said smcc could not win because they were small, weak, slow and a division 6 team. Now you claim they should not be in the league. Sit back and think about that. Grow up and just admit your defeat like a man. And those saying smcc is lucky there is no rematch you are crazy. They would beat Huron worse than the first time. Nothing wrong with losing but there is when you lose like a crying little girl. Your Huron boys are talented and you need to teach them to pick themselves up after a loss and learn from it. If this is how all the Huron parents act after a loss then their kids will never learn and just know how to be a crying sore loser and make excuses. Grow up for your kids sake. They are worth it. In the end its really just a dumb game. What they learn from it is what will help them excel in life.

  31. It takes a minute to rebuild. 47 years of the same takes time to uninstall! Second year of a new defense and first year of a new offense gonna cause some growing pains! Give it time the Bears will be back.
It's Great To Be A Bear

  32. Riverview didn't have open enrollment until maybe 10 years ago. And they're not the only school who has open enrollment. They've been in the Huron League since 1980. They battled CC back in the 80's and 90's when it was all kids from the same neighborhood, and never complained about it. It's called Pirate Pride.

The top enrollment school in the league changes every couple years. A few years ago it was Milan, before that Airport. Enrollment numbers are cyclical. We can't change who is in the league every two years because somebody wants to complain about enrollment numbers.

The history of this league goes way back before your kid got in school, too bad people forget that.

  33. My two cents.

SMCC is a member of this league. They aren't going anywhere. They deserve to be there.

Last night SMCC was the better, faster, more physical team. They look like a state championship contender. Huron looked very good for a half and the wheels fell off. They look like a playoff team, but still have work to do.

The recruiting thing is old. The open enrollment thing is old. Just play with who is at your school.

Next week should have some more real competitive games. There are a handful of good teams in this league this year.

  34. man Riverview can never just have a game where people can say "wow they outplayed them" which they did last night. Airport had chances and they didn't do anything with them. Riverview v.s. CC for the league title week 7.

  35. Please someone tell me how cc "recruits" and also tell me how if we recruit do we not have 1 transfers for football in the last 2 years but we lost about 5 good players? Lmao

  36. As a former riverview player i think the comments about getting cc out of the league are ridiculous. I love having cc in the league and that game is always a special game. You know cc is good year in and year out and i wouldnt want it any other way. Some of the most memorable games in recent riverview history have been against cc. The 92 playoff game where riverview stops cc on 4th down in OT to win, or the 04 game when the league was on the line and rivierview won. I would never want to see them league and it would be a shame if they left. Cc makes the huron league better. If they left the league would suffer. To be the best you have to beat cc and thats what every other huron league team should embrace, not runaway from.

  37. Scott Mozham speaks not only for himself, but for all Riverview Pirates. We never feared CC. They were our team to beat. They got us more, but we got them every couple years and it was sweet when we did. Maybe its because 2 former Riverview coaches graduated from CC, I don't know. But they are our Huron league brothers. The entire Riverview program has great respect for CC.

  38. If CC has the advantage over everyone in the Huron league, why is it that other public schools (even D6) have beaten them. Ever. If the 949 poster's thought process is correct, then they should be undefeated. For 70 years.

  39. I am a former riverview player these comments about getting cc out of the league bothers me. It would be a shame if cc left the league and i would not be happy about that. Cc is the team u want to be and want to beat. Some people just dont know the history of the huron league. Cc is good year in and year out and thats a good thing! Some of the most memorable games are against cc. The 92 playoff game where riverview made a goal stand in OT to win the game, or the 04 game where the league title was on the line and riverview clinched it with a win over cc. When you beat them its a special win. They can recruit and we cant. I wouldnt have it any other way. Cc is a huron league brother in my eyes as we all know when you play your brother in anything you want to win bad. Thats my opinion. Go bucs!

    1. The whole recruiting thing again? You seem like a knowledgeable football guy so let's have an honest discussion. Riverview according to state numbers has one of the largest number of students who are using the open enrollment policy. Got a player or two from Trenton 2 years ago and a couple of southgate transplants this year. Don't get me wrong I find nothing wrong with that at all. I am all in favor of kids bettering themselves academically and athletically. If that means going to another district then so be it. That is not a result of recruitment. As for CC currently, they've actually lost kids as it pertains to football. And each and every player on their current varsity team enrolled as freshmen. No transfers into the program. They may be one of the only programs in the league that can say that.

    2. Great commentary Scott. There are good people throughout this league and there is a lot of great history. I love to hear my dad talk about his playing days. When you go to a game and see generations of fans socializing with each other from both sidelines, you see the Huron league community at its best. I know that if KC had trouble starting his car after the game, BN or EM would be glad to help with some jumper cables.

    3. Cc has a great history of winning. I have a ton of respect for their program. Im not dogging them at all. When i made the recruiting comment i was refering to back in the day when both schools had the same amount of kids. Obviously now things are different and i get that. It shows how great the program is since they have lost kids and these other schools get bigger. Thats all.

  40. Apparently Riverview must be the luckiest team in the league, at least according to this forum. They only beat Milan because Milan had too many penalties; they only beat Airport because of a fumble.

Jeez, I'd hate to see what happens when they actually play good.

  41. Yeah to the guy who said cc has the largest talent pool to pick from? The last three huron league champs. Milan, Milan, and airport. Idk just some facts

  42. I want to reply to a comment in the Thoughts and Questions section from a couple of days back. There was a comment made about the GI coach and how he treats his players. Now, I'm not taking a side as to how the players are treated because I can't confirm or deny either way. BUT, instead of trashing ANY coach anonymously, has it ever occurred to you that this is not the forum for that? If you truly believe that a coach treats your son, or you if you are a player, in a certain way, why not speak to the coach instead of airing your dirty laundry in public? There is a notion that if a parent disagrees with a coach, his/her kid will get less playing time or will be punished in some way.If your kid is worth anything, this won't be the case. Do the right thing and take it to the coach, or stop your whining. It's the adult thing to do.

  43. Its not hate, its not sour grapes. Its a fact. SMCC fans have been quiet on hear until recently, so there has not been much talk. Well, now there is. I am not at all a Huron fan, but I am aware of how hard their program has worked and all the people there who volunteer their time. They are probably the best team in the league other than CC, so when the best public school in the league gets beat by a private school by 33. Something is not right. Its time for them to go. I have been around a long time and know what should happen here. Rumor has it Milan might join a different league soon, CC should do the same. We can bring in possibly Trenton or Ida, someone like that. Its time folks. Other than the recent years with the Milan school of choice, SMCC has been milking the Huron league for years, public schools should combine forces and get it done. No one would miss them.

    1. Dude i love having cc in the league. Some of these fans just dont understand the history, the rivalrys, and what cc means to the league. It would be a shame if they ever left.

      – former riverview player

  44. Ok… coming from a SMCC grad… check the historical record… the league has always been competetive… to cry about not belonging won't make your team any better, just keep working… tides cycle. What I saw on the field last night was an even played game that went south for Huron with 41 seconds left in the first half… Huron lost their intensity in the second half but still played solid. It is the process of learning how to win… Jack's teams went through it, but when they lost it there was recent history to learn from. If this Huron team regroups and improves from last night, rather than listening to their "fans" excuses, they can set the trail for a generation of winning football… win your 6 and make some noise in the playoffs….

  45. Every school has transfers coming in. Those that REALLY help their team(Huron QB, Milan QB, Milan LB) SMCC loses their 2 best players and knezevich to transfers and somehow we get accused of unfair practices.

    Odd

  46. Cc's interior offensive line weighs 180-175-180. How did they roll up so many yards?

    Shout out to poupard-coombe-McMillen.

  47. GI crushed FR. I felt bad for Hamton he had zero blocking. Moore's had a great game on both sides of the ball. We'll see what GI's made of against CC. Perhaps the Huron game was a fluke for GI and they will come out and compete against smcc??

  48. You people are just all sick! It is high school footballand teams win and teams lose. It's like your whole life is based around your former school. Whoever wins each week you find some kind of fault with their team or program. Again it's just high school football. It's just a game for 16,17 and 18 year old kids to play.

  49. I found myself at the bar after the game…

Figured I'd wait til the morning to post but no better time than now.

CC Fans can jack their jaws and say all they want but the game I saw was close. Defense stopped plays when they needed to and the offense out ran your defense when it came to it. You're not perfect at either side of the ball so don't claim that it was a blow out because Huron defense put up a hell of a fight this game. The offense was shakey and had some bad and terrible plays but I saw a defense stop you when they CONTAINED. Huron had opportunities and to those that weren't there. Up until the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half, it was a much closer game than CC will agree to. Score was 13-7. Huron fumbled a kick off giving CC the ball back and they scored within 30 seconds. Huron could've very well made that game a lot closer that it was but the defense gave up and so did the offense.. Huron contested and they gave it their all. And not a single one of you CC Fans can walk away saying they didn't give you a fight every time you came into the red zone. The score seems like a large margin but the battle on the field was more than the score shows..

    KC

    1. I'll agree that it was more competitive then the score. Huron did a good job defensively for the most part, limited the big plays. The offense was not impressive. I didn't see the speed everyone talked about and they could not throw the ball at all.

  50. Love the sour grapes.

You don't hear this kind of talk until CC wins. When they don't win the league you hear nothing.

Your kids got beat by a better team today. Tip your hat and get better.

    Quit making excuses

  51. Saying CC does not belong is ridiculous they have been in the league for years. Everyone has their year. Do not he bitter because they waxed your team.

  52. Keep your head up Huron. You have a great program and have come a long way. You still have a possibility of still finishing first in the league against all the public schools, still something to be proud of. GO CHIEFS !!

  53. Milan left at least 35 points on the board. To fumbles lost inside the 5 of Jefferson, 2 interceptions and an 80 yard punt return call back. Also, an inadvertent whistle when Jefferson snapped the punt over their own head for a safety. Line judge blows the whistle and they re play the down. Never seen anything like it.

    Could have easily been 70-0.

    1. The official blew the punter down and the other official overruled the call because he didn't have possession of the ball when he slipped. He would've got the kick off anyway. They had no choice but to replay the down.

  54. Hey 11:01 have you heard of school of choice. Give me a break. Sore losers ! Make up crap that has no bearing on reality. You are clueless !

  55. I'll tell you this much, there was just as much of not more talent/size on Huron's side of the ball tonight. It comes down to coaching and discipline.

  56. Because there is only 1 other school in our area that can remotely attract talent as good as SMCC and is making their best effort to do so. Of course thats Milan. They have a new school and are using school of choice to its fullest extent to compete. They have been very succesful so far. Obviously, state chapionship in basketball, 2nd in league in baseball, champs in football. Without that, they would not beat SMCC. No one else has come close. Milan sees the writing on the wall here and is doing their best to change it.

  57. The play of the game happened late 3rd quarter with Airport trailing 14-13. Riverview punted from around midfield and Airport fumbled the punt at the 15 & Riverview capitalized with a TD. Before the fumble Airport had the momentum, scoring easily on its previous 2 drives. If Airport doesnt fumble and goes down and takes the lead who knows. But props to Riverview for capitalizing on Airport's mistake. EM

  58. Folks, I got to tell you CC will always be bashed as long as they are in this league. You need to join a catholic school league where the rules are apples to apples. You should win all the time, you should never get beat. The best kids around within 25-30 miles of your school pay $8,000 to go there, plus you have the CYO which has kids from Rockwood, Carleton, Newport, Erie, Lasalle, Monroe, etc and you take the very best of those kids for your teams. Of course you should win.

Theres no secrets or magic or super coaches here, you simply have the largest talent pool.

Please join a league with teams that have a system like yours. There is no glory or satisfaction in you beating a Huron League team. Its a great school with a good system, but you don't belong here.

  59. There we go with people bashing CC again. If its so simple to stop then why can't you. Milan is good but will suffer the same fate.

  60. Jefferson has a lot of problems. Execution is very poor. Not in sync, runners don't get hand off at full speed. Half the blockers know where to go, half do not. QB is forcing the passes. Too many mistakes. Practices have got to be more productive. Coaches need to analyze what is happening and make the adjustments. All these coaches are experienced and paid. Use your knowledge.

Bright spot, penalties are way down. Got to work hard Bears. Lets go!!!

  61. SMCC won today, but they got a few nice breaks. Their run offense is not complicated. Someone please execute a defense to stop this, because its nothing special. You will LOSE. Milan was upset last week, they are NOT a bad team. They will overpower SMCC. Their team is way bigger and faster than yours. Last week was a fluke.

  62. (@ 9:55 pm) I don't know if that statement is true. I think SMCC is just that good. Huron gets Milan and Riverview the next two weeks. We will obviously know a lot more then. I thought Huron played very well in the 1st half except for the last minute of the second quarter. Don't be surprised if SMCC doesn't do that to the whole league.

  63. Lol ! All that talk about your better coach, bigger and faster players, little league football and no way can a D6 team handle you. You just got manhandled by a D6 team ! There is no curse you simply are not good enough. Chumps !!!!!!

  64. Huron down 13-7 49 secs to go in half. Huron fumbles punt return. SMCC scores. Kickoff hits Huron front man. SMCC recovers. Long TD pass to Vuich with 12 secs. 27-7 SMCC halftime. Game over! The curse lives on.

  65. Where are the Huron mouth runners now. Lear your lesson here. CC is better and so is cyo. The Huron league God's have spoken. Lol!

  66. Huron maybe getting better but is no where close to the top teams in the league yet. So much for SMCC not being able to stop Hurons big and fast offense.

    1. On all Jefferson coaches we to go do they have a clue 4 the down fake punt first quarter not trying to draw off sides .terrible coaches fire them all
