Riverview (9-1) @ Carlson (9-1)

Last week Riverview defeated Trenton 34-7 while Carlson came from behind to defeat Huron 29-19. These two teams have not met since 1992 when Carlson was part of the Huron League. Riverview leads the all-time series 10-3.

Riverview’s offense was taylor-made for the rain storm that came through last week against Trenton and wasn’t slowed down. The Pirates rushed for over 400 yards, but should find the sledding a little tougher against the Marauders. Look for the trio of Cam Rogers, Zach Guthrie and Zack Warlick to get the bulk of the carries behind a solid offensive line. The defense has been good all season and is giving up just over 14 ppg. They are led on defense by Tyler Dively, Kyle Naif and Steven Rice.

Carlson struggled to beat Huron last week trailing at one point by a score of 19-7 early in the 3rd. The difference in the game was senior QB Jaylan Franklin (2 TD’s) who left the game in the first half due to an injury, but was able to return after halftime. Franklin will most certainly be the focal point against Riverview along with RB’s Steph Sanders and Brandon Stewart. The Carlson defense will need to be stout in order to stop the Pirate rushing attack and will call upon players like Ian Stewart and Jacob Simons to do just that.

This is a battle of two teams that run the T. There will most likely be limited possessions and the team that controls the clock and limits turnovers will be in great position to win the game. This game certainly has star power in players like Rogers and Franklin and whichever star shines brightest could have a leg up.

  1. Big pay raise for coaches this year at my school. From 3000 to 3500. So if you coach 3 sports you might crack 5 figures. With the hours that I put in, its minimum wage. But my assistants work for less than half of that, so I pay a couple of them out of my pocket. We do this for the love of the game and to give back. Nobody is in it for the money.

  2. This is funny. 850x said that coaches get paid 5 figures to coach. I know coaches that coach football basketball and track and don't make 5 figures combined for those sports.

  3. I'd be interested in hearing from Huron and Trenton players. Both of those squads have played both of tonight's teams and would be able to give a better assessment of strengths and weaknesses. Come on Chief's and Trojan's players, what say you about tonight's match up? BTW, no homering for your respective conference reps. Give a players, honest opinion.

  4. The redistricting actually hurts Edsel Ford. The redistricting to Edsel means they are getting the uber poor immigrants from the Southend. Most don't know any sports other than maybe soccer. Quite frankly for many of them, they are too busy learning the language and adjusting to life in the US instead of playing sports This means a windfall for Dearborn and Fordson as they will begin to get more students from other areas of the city. I may be wrong on the details, but from what I heard, this isn't helping Edsel.

  5. It depends on who you schedule in the 2 non league games. The 8 Huron league teams have 16 non league games. This year, 12 of those games were against playoff teams. One of the non playoff teams was against U of D Jesuit. Typically the HL does not schuledule cupcakes to get to 6 wins.

  6. Edsel Ford a playoff team this year also joins the Downriver league next year. The rumor also is that Dearborn is redestricting which will give Edsel more kids-Could be a tough opponent definitely not a bye week like the Kennedy game had become.
just a thought or question -The downriver league has no non league openers or closers-these coaches would die to name their first and last game like the Huron League teams basically due.
U win those 2 games and realistically u have to now only win 3 of 7 games to get in playoffs.
Thoughts Gary and Chris or whomever?

  7. @7:30 you are right these coaches give up their time to take a paid position to coach. Some of these positions pay 5 figures. Blogs are a place to express opinions. What part of that are you having trouble with. As for calling me out about coaching and raising young men. I have coached football & baseball. Have two kids playing college athletics on scholarship.

  8. Carlson will not be ready for Riverviews run game. The views o-line mixed with their awesome backs makes them near impossible to stop

  9. Anyone who was at the Carlson/Huron game would know how the game really went. Carlson marched down the field on less than 5 plays and fumbled on their 20yd line. Next series, another fumble and a 15yd punt giving Huron great field position. Great weather tonight! Expect the Marauders to come out hot!

And anyone who thinks the HL has more talent than the DRL does not know football…

  10. @850x. Calling out coaches who basically volunteer their time and work hard for their kids and their programs should not be tolerated. It destroys teams and coaches. The game of football is under attack enough as it is. It’s not easy to find a coach that is willing to put his heart and sole into a team. ALL these Area men spend countless hours away from their families to coach. If you have a beef with a coach or their philosophy, say it to their face. No participation trophy’s needed. The coaches that weren’t successful this year are already getting to work for next year. You on the other hand contribute nothing to helping mold young boys into men. Grow up, do something good for someone. Your view on the roles of youth athletics is flawed if you think criticising Highschool Football coaches on a blog is a fun past time. Grow up!

  11. To say Carlson is better because they are in the Downriver league is Ridiculous. Carlson victories have been against 2 very bad Taylor teams in Wich the Huron leagues worst team Jefferson would destroy! Some of There victories are against some bad teams. Carlson struggled against Huron that Riverview beat without allowing a touchdown. People under estimate Huron league teams! Riverview will be there to fight don't blink Carlson.

  12. On a side note next year Taylor Truman will have over 2000 students because of Kennedy closing. I wonder if a potential power house could be created. I know both schools right now are not very good but out of 2000 students can't they find 15-18 players. The right coach could win thete fir sure.

  13. I saw both Carlson and View play a couple of times this year. Carlson threw the ball around alot better than View. It is hard for me to believe that View can win this one unless they throw better than what I have seen.especially since they will probably be down late. Carlson 28-14.

  14. Chris you forgot to mention Wyandotte. The only team in the area with continued success in the playoffs. Wyandotte is pretty much the gold standard and I thought they would blow Carlson out, and for a while it looked the other way. Pretty sure no one has more playoff win than Wyandotte, maybe SMCC but that's not really the area.

  15. @ 2:56 if you think the head chief is a genius you better head back into your teepee.
It almost game time go Carlson time to stop the train.

  16. Since 2005 riverview is 2-6 vs downriver league. I'm not saying DR league is the AA catholic league, but doesn't that record speak for itself? Huron league has sone good teams, so does DR league. But in playoffs over the past ten years DR league has had more success. That is just a fact.

  17. Both teams are equal. The team that limits big plays and wins the turnover battle will win. Both quality teams. Carlson better at skill positions Riverview better upfront.

  18. This is going to be a great game, both teams have worked very hard to get where they are. No matter who wins tomorrow, all of these kids(and coaches too) have a lot to be proud of. Best of luck to both teams, may the best team win!

  19. Not really understanding any of that there black beard…
Didn't Milan have a big and bad offense line that riverview took a part
I wasn't clear on rankings the kid I looked is 13th in state in sacks
As a fan I expect it to be a good game

  20. I'm glad Carlson's QB is good to go. Now they will have no excuses. The train is due to arrive at 7:00 tomorrow and plans to RUN OVER everything in it's path. CHOO CHOO!!!!!!!

  21. @ 725 if you have been following the league like i have. Im sure you know who the best coach in the league is. The guy is a genius and i see a state championship in the very near future for the chiefs

  22. I did some research on the internet and found some d end rankings.

    D End Uncle’s State Rankings:
    1. The Other Guy
    2. The Other Guy
    3. Views D End – soph
    4. The Other Guy
    5. Carlson’s Oline- to big and strong
    6. Views Dline – they wreck havoc

Cmon guys, hold a glove up to protect the chin every once in a while.

  23. @8:47 Huron beat Trenton in the district finals a few years ago, and whooped Riverview the week before that.

    Go Carlson

  24. Then you must have been at some of the jv games then cause that D line wrecks havoc, teams have a hard time running against and if they decide to pass the d ends will be back there. 1 of them is ranked really high in the state and I believe he's only a sophomore..
close game but Bucs pull this one out with the strong running game

  25. If you leave out all of the opions, the facts remain that both of these teams are very good. Both teams have lost a game. Both teams are capable of beating their opponent. It’s been a long time coming for the fans in Riverview and Gibraltar to participate in a game of this magnitude. Let’s go Bucs!!!

  26. Carlson's offense line is just to big and strong the QB is going to run and throw all over Riverview defense all night..I've seen a couple of Riverviews games they are a good little team just not good enough or big enough in my opion.

  27. I love that facilities and being part of the Downriver league wins games. According to 8:47 and 6:44. Gary better watch out you two could be the next big announcers with insight like that. #fearthehorn #bucnation.

  28. @6:34 What part of my post do you have a problem with.

Two Great Teams: Riverview 9-1 Huron League Champs. Carlson 9-1 only loss to state ranked Wyandotte.

Two Great Coaches: Carlson coaches career speaks for itself. Riverview coach should be coach of the year for the turn around from last year.

Officials: Happen to know Two that are working the game.

Concessions: Carlson has one of the best football facilities in the downriver area

Fans: Place will be packed great following for both schools.

Opinions: This is a blog you should be able to call out a coach for his on field performance. A team for a particular offense or defense. But you should never be allowed to call out a player or a position.

Have fun with you participation trophy.

    850X

  29. Carlson's only strength is beating up on teams like Truman Kennedy and Lincoln Park. They have not seen an offensive line like Riverview's in the pathetic Downriver League. CHOO CHOO!!!!!!

  30. In my opinion…(better make that clear), I believe this game will be the best, most exciting game this season in the metro Detroit area. I think this game will be super close, within 3 points. Carlson has proved their strength throughout the season, being strong in every part of the game and they’re a tough bunch of boys. However, Riverview has been great through the season and it seems as though they’re just getting even better. Riverview started out as a top rushing team, and now they’ve improved on passing the ball. This game may come down to seconds but I’m giving the edge to the Pirates.

  31. Hey 4:15, if you don't like the blog, start your own. You are probably one who only likes to criticize, talk smack and use sarcasm in every one of your comments with your courageous, little, anonymous thumbs. Bring some knowledge or value one time!

  32. This is a game between two great teams, with the best coaches in the area, the officials will be perfect, concessions food great, fans will cheer. Welcome to the Friday night victors where your opinions if pointing out a team or coaches flaws is not tolerated.
