Grosse Ile @ Milan

Both teams are coming off of losses. Milan (2-2) fell at Huron 28-14 while Grosse Ile (2-2) fell to SMCC 28-0. Milan won last years game 40-6 and have won 8 of the last 10 against the Red Devils.

Grosse Ile’s offense has abandoned them in their two losses against quality teams. The Red Devils must find a way to get Andrew Mitroka in space. The defense has struggled against quality opponents as well.

Milan must cut down on their turnovers. They were a completely different team in the 2nd half last week against Huron when they didn’t turn it over.. The defense will play well enough, if they don’t have to keep going back on the field after another turnover.

This was a game that many thought would have implications on the league title. Not so much now. A win for either team gives them a shot at the playoffs while a loss for either most likely will leave them out. Prediction: Milan 21 Grosse Ile 14

  1. This should be a good game. Don't be surprised if Mitroka and company go off offensively. They are more than capable. Lindeman needs to have a good game. GI has a pretty solid defense.

    1. Lindeman had a GREAT game 200+ yards rushing 3 TD's and 1 touchdown pass. He's a great player but can't win by himself Chris.

  2. Getting back to the game itself, I'd like to see some chunk plays by the offense, whether it's long scoring plays or just big yardage plays. When an offense is having a tough time with turnovers and execution, stringing together a 12 play drive is even tougher than normal. Throwing in a big play here and there can help defuse this offense before it has the chance to implode. If Milan can score early in the game, it can play with a lead–something it's only done for long stretches in the Jefferson game this season–and playing with a lead is usually easier than playing catch up all game long. Even if those long plays don't result in scores, they can help flip the field in the field position game and set your offense up with short fields. Of course, scoring on a short field should take fewer plays (in theory) and help to put points on the board before a shaky offense can cough up the ball.

It's not much an endorsement of my team, but I'm looking for big plays to help Milan win this game tonight.

    1. It make sense now Milan lost like I said. Point is it doesnt matter if your young..and its no guarantee your gona win with alot seniors next year.

  3. Glad someone mentioned #12. This is from the facebook page of the Milan Eagle News from 9/22:

Milan Varsity Football Cornerback Jon Swain Injured in Auto accident

Jonathon Swain, all around athlete of Milan Varsity Football, Basketball and Track has been at St. Joe Medical Center Hospital since his accident on Sunday morning, September 21, 2014.

Jon was heading Northbound on Whittaker Rd when he lost control of his vehicle, swerved into oncoming traffic and was sent into a spin. His Honda Civic was then struck in the front quarter panel and driver side by a Pickup truck driven by a Ypsilanti township resident.

Detective McMullen of the Sheriff’s Department indicated that Jon had to be extricated from the vehicle after he was cut from his seatbelt. The exact cause of the vehicle swerving is yet unknown and may remain a mystery until after Jon can tell his story. His most obvious injuries included multiple broken ribs from the side impact of the pickup truck and a hemopneumothorax (collapsed lung).

Jon is the baby of eleven children to Larry and JoAnne Swain of Ypsilanti Township. Jon has an older brother who once had a football injury that hospitalized him with paralysis so watching Jon lay in the hospital in ICU is very hard for his family. After speaking with Jon’s parents The Milan Eagle confirmed Jon’s current medical condition with the Chief Resident on Staff at the hospital. Jon is being watched for signs of a DAI brain injury along with a splenic laceration, and multiple broken ribs (+5). His father asked and was told that Jon has been observed for signs of seizures but as of yet none have occurred which is a very good sign.
He does respond when asked to squeeze your hand or wave his hand so that is also a very good sign.

Jon is on the second floor at St. Joe Hospital and is allowed to have visitors (2 at a time) although he remains in SICU. His family has asked that visitors limit their visitations to before 8PM to help the hospital control Jon’s sleep patterns and get back to normal as soon as possible.

  4. If Milan looses who's the blame the kids or the coaching. If GI looses is it mitroka not 100 or they lost to a better Milan.

  5. Milan still has not played to their potential. They are starting to show signs of muturity but still have some growing to do. I look for Gray to have a big game defensively. I also think Lindeman will have a big game. O line and D line steps up and will make the plays this week.

  6. Hopefully Milan can put things together for Homecoming.

Also, can anyone out there tell me why Milan has only two league games at home this season? Hopefully I'm mistaken, but this is what I keep finding for a league schedule for the Big Reds:

    vs. Riverview
    @ Jefferson
    @ Huron
    vs. GI
    @ SMCC
    @ Flat Rock
    @ Airport

Sure, their two non-conference games are at home, but I figured that a 7 game league schedule would have 3 home and 4 road games (or vice versa), with those numbers flipped the following season.

I'm not saying this is why Milan has struggled, as they have struggled at home for the same reasons that plague them on the road, but I thought the schedule quirk was odd…

  7. GI. The offense has really struggled and so have a few of their key offensive players. But for playing two weaker defensive teams the offense has just not clicked. The defense held a very good offensive SMCC team to 14 points at the half. But again the offense just stunk and had more 3 and outs than I can mention. I would hesitate to be critical of GI's defense as compared to the offensive woes.

  8. The defense has not played that badly Chris. They seem to be on the field all the time due to the ineptness of their offense. Also a few critical turnovers by the offense has put them on a short field as well.
